Can't believe I had missed this conversation until now; having followed all three now for a while, I could not have dreamt up a better team of defense thinkers with Katarina, Justin & Oscar. Definitely hope to see them together again soon!
Fantastic content. Not understanding how this only has 81 views. Justin Bronk & Oscar Jonsson are speaking the cold hard truth here. Among the most important points made here that I'm not hearing other so-called experts emphasize is that the West needs to come to grips with the fact that: (i) there's no quick fix for Ukraine or the collective West, (ii) the threat isn't going away and forcing Ukraine to make concessions only increases the threat and the likelihood of additional future aggression, (iii) Europe can't count on the US always being there in sufficient force to save the day in Europe, because the US has to worry about China and Korea, etc., and (iv) deterrence can work, but only if you are committed to demonstrating that it's real by having a force structure, munitions and equipment that's of sufficient scale to demonstrate that you really meant it - which is expensive - but much less so than the alternative. As to point 4 - only Poland seems to truly grasp the scale of investment in defense that's required to create and maintain a credible deterrent effect.
Thank you for this excellent comment. I'm an American living in Kherson through the war and I am just finding out about these guys. I'm an engineer and I like the detail and lack of BS. Also the systemic approach. Again, very astute comment. What is your profession?
If you don't understand why the view count is so low it means there's HOPE for the world! How brainwashed are you?? All these so-called Russia experts got everything wrong but now they're right!?! RUSI got every prediction horribly wrong but here they are nagging generalised statements about war!? These guys are a joke!
Interesting comparison to Finland. In 2022 we bought no new weapon systems. We had systems already, we are investing heavily on resilience. We did put immediately extra 700 million Euros (+12%) for 2022, and used ALL of that for ammo to current systems and training. Same continues this year and next (save decision on new high tier SAM and new drones). Ammo, ammo and more ammo. Wars against tough enemy arent won with sample packs of munitions. Excellent talk, as usual Justin Bronk.
Oscar Jonsson is spot on, re cruise missiles: I've been saying [to myself] for years that Sweden should have a production line, steadily adding to large inventory, large enough to innundate an adversary.
Far better to have a clear eyed and realistic assessment of the challenge ahead not just for Sweden but the entire Global West. I admire Mr Bronk's ability to explain both the view from 40,000' but also the vital day to day practicalities.
If Gripen were to find demand from NATO nations, what are the chances it could be manufactured under license in other countries, such as in USA by Northrop-Grumman, which does not currently have an active fighter production line? Could Ukraine be the means to bootstrap such an expansion of production for Sweden?
Those chances would be *very high*! But I will ask: Since Northrop-Grumman doesn't have an active fighter line, is there really any in-house competence left there to work with and design such a thing though? 🤔 I ask, sine in my experience, once the money dries up, the competence seems to evaporate and disapear to other places. But anyway: One of the main idea of the Gripen E/F program is actually to search for licensors and open up production lines in other countries, and use extensive technology transfer to those partners' engineers så that the will not only be able to produce the aircraft themselves, but also to independently from Sweden improve, redesign or introduce new features or new weapons themselves. High level education handed over in modern fighter design! Brazil is the first full partner, they opted for *a specific* set of technology transfer, and paid for that level (you will se their Gripen E/F's have *slimmer* EW senders/receivers out at the tip of the wings compared to the Swedish Gripen E), and Brazil now making their own custom changes to the Gripen E/F. Like the ability to refuel the aircraft from regular gravity gas pumps or barrels of gas through new openings on *top of the wings*, similar to what cars and motorcycles have. Swedish fighters don't have that option for refueling, and never will. For example. But as a partner level customer, then can do whatever they like, and they have full access to the model based design process.
@@stefanbrodin1918Northrop should have some development capabilities, they are often primary subcontractors for fighter production. For example, they were the primary subcontractor producing the main body airframe for Super Hornets. The F/A-18 was originally a Northrop project, and McDonnell-Douglass was the subcontractor in charge of the navalized version. However, only the naval version got a big contract.
USA especially has pretty dim view on countries which ask new systems in middle of crisis. That why Finland has bought JSOW, JASSM, GMLRS, GMLRS-ER, NASAMS 2, SDB II, etc well in advance. Now its time just replenish ammo.
Excellent . My old teacher used say the three P's PLANNING , PREPARATION , PRESENTATION . No he was not speaking about warfare . However the more I think about it , the more I see how relevant in warfare the 3 P's are . RUSSIA missed the P's ,UKRAINE was a little ahead . No doubt RUSSIA will persist , so its important NATO the WEST and UKRAINE are up to the task . Good point , Upgrade , More Production , More training , Smarter weapons and technology and AIR POWER , AIR POWER AIR POWER , a new generation of DRONES ( Hunter Killer Stealth DRONES ) .SLAVA UKRAINI . I hope top military ' BRASS' will tune in to this and get the production of KIT up to date . SLAVA UKRAINI . One thought , PUTIN is waiting for TRUMP??????????????? Likely , yes .
Justin is that one guy who can tell u exactly what the objective is objectively.
You are as allways spot on Justin dont know why this showed up now instead of when it was publicied.

By LEAVING it. Dumbest move in Sweden's history to join a cold war era hostile alliance.
I dont want to belong to NATO when Erdogans respekt to sweden is like shit .. beter we build a new aliance with more stabel contrys
