How I Restored the Hellboy II Figure from Crumbling?

  • Hello everyone! In today's video, I want to show you how I restored the 1/6 Hellboy II figure from Hot Toys. Typically, most figures from this manufacturer have recurring issues with the deterioration of materials that imitate leather. Therefore, I want to share here on my channel the process I went through to replace all the parts of the figure that were crumbling. I hope this video can inspire or encourage you to customize, create, and have fun with your miniatures.
    See you in the next one!

    Ill be honest I wish companies would stop using the fake leather spray n crap it sucks on everything they put it on. It never holds up I would rather it just be CLOTH with maybe a Shimmering dye, lacquer, gloss paint of some kind. The of grease and acrylic was good, but looked to involved for a production line. But there has to be something dye in manufacturing that is close enough that could be used. You used real leather on the belts I got no idea of any material that could replace that. Only soft plastics but those degrade over time as well and I cant imagine real leather used on a collectible toy line without a lot of cost increase in the final product.

      Its not the choice of materials but the storage factor, especially with these clam shelled figures. I have alot of HT figures with mixed media over 10 years old and all is like new because i display all my figures in cabinets that are not air tight. Its keeping them sealed in a box especially these clam shell boxes with the tight fitting plastic shells that cause problems, off gassing can be destructive over time, some materials worse then others. The destruction of the lower black plastic shell shows how potent off gassing can be.

      @@waynesbutler7834 Aaah hmm interesting
      I watch a 1/6 scale figure reviewer that lives in Australia and he talks a lot about pleather not lasting because of the temperature where he lives. Guess it depends where you are and like you said, how it's stored. Still nice to get real leather where you can.

      @@lordaniolist Yes that is another variable for sure that i should of mentioned but i already have an issue with being a chatter box, lol. Temperature and humidity are huge factors with alot of stuff in our house from collectables to wooden furniture. The only place that is safe is a vault 30 feet in the ground where the temp and humidity is more regulated. At the end of the day you do what you can do nothing more nothing less. We dont last forever and neither does our figures. Like in life enjoy it while it last.

    • @lordaniolist

      @@waynesbutler7834 lol i gotcha, no problem for me, I like hearing about this kind of stuff.
      True but they are very expensive, I would hope everything that could be done was when ordering something that costs so much. Big props if you know and don't mind to replace pieces but I feel like in general these types of things could have been altered for not toooooo much more.
      Then again I've never bought a 1/6 scale figure and maybe temperature isn't a big deal until you get to higher extremes. It seems like I've had pleather items and they've been fine, but i'm not sure about items on this level, besides what I've heard.

    This is why you never keep your figures sealed in a box, off gassing will eat the rubber and plastics without ventilation, So many collectors have their sets sealed in a box thinking blindly that it will retain its value for future resale when without knowing its a greasy mess. That smell we all like when opening a new Hottoys or similar figure is off gassing and the beginning of the end if not dealt with early. Great job on the restoration.

And it came out in 2013-2014 when the movie released. Nearly 11 years passed and I opened it for the first time and it was in perfect condition. Posed him up a few times and he still looks as good as new. No loose joints, nothing. All the pleather hadn't even came off yet. I'd say not all of them deteriorate as fast after so many years.

    It's good that you used real leather cos that's what it should have been at the price of the time.

    Hello friend! Excellent work with all the restoration. However, I wanted to ask, I really liked the result of the pants. I had a piece and I would like to try to do this procedure. However, I have never done it before. Could you explain to me if this would be the process: remove all the synthetic leather, wash, apply acrylic black, polish and repeat this procedure 3 times or should I apply acrylic black 3 times and only then polish 3 times? Sorry to bother you, but I really don't want to make a mistake :D

    • @biginjapanminiatures
      @biginjapanminiatures  17 дней назад +1

      Hey, mate! Yes, the process is quite simple: remove all the synthetic coating, wash, apply three coats of black acrylic paint, let it dry well, and finally, apply shoe polish at least three times, just like you would with shoes. 👍🏻

    friend, this can't be compared to the original, this is much worse, there is glue everywhere, in the original there are rivets, the stitching is small, everything is stitched according to its size, as for a person, the stitching would be 100mm

      Of course. Hence the title "restored", it is meant for an attempt to restore an aged figure, not to exactly replicate it.

      Exactly, modesty aside, I did better than Hot Toys. I researched the character and the materials used in the movie. At least I'm sure that the tactical belt and pants won't crack over time anymore.
      Thanks for watching!

    Im so glad i sold my Hellboy Figure a few years ago to another collector, the pants had the same problem. Mine looked still good. Seeing the other fake leather parts have the same problem is just very bad.
    I hope my other old figures with fake leather will not face the same problem.

    That was phenomenal!
    Was the crumbling due to poor storage conditions or are all these figures prone to this issue purely due to age?

    • @biginjapanminiatures
      @biginjapanminiatures  17 дней назад +1

      Unfortunately, this issue of the fabric crumbling applies to all that were released.
      Hot Toys is aware of these issues and continues to use poor-quality materials in their figures. Everyone knows that the ideal material for good finishes should be leather. Especially because the prices of these figures are high.
      Hot Toys has been failing miserably in choosing materials.
      Thanks for watching, mate!

      @@biginjapanminiatures Ah ok, thank you for the information. I was always a NECA collector myself due to the pricing of them but even they are getting a bit rich for my blood. I can’t imagine the cost of a Hot Toys collection, let alone one that is disintegrating before my very eyes 🫣

    • @biginjapanminiatures
      @biginjapanminiatures  Год назад +3

      Hello, mate! The process for fixing a crusty boot would be the same. However, there are fabrics that are very fragile when losing the film that imitates leather, you know?
      If the fabric is very bad, the result will probably not be satisfactory.
      Make sure about that first. Otherwise, repeat my process on your boots. Thank You!!
      Take care!

    Quite a few comments are failing to realize this really has nothing to do with the item being sealed the parts of this item that are peeling are synthetic leather which is a plastic with a canvas backing the adhesive will fail in 1-5 years reguardless of how well the item is stored. This process is known as hydrolysis and if you are a collector use your items they cannot be saved.
