- Recorded from VHS, just for sharing how Regine Velasquez competed and won her very first International Contest. This is an excerpt after the first entries from different cities in Asia Pacific. The first outfits of Regine Velasquez (white) were displayed in The Music Museum. The 2nd (black) wore by Regine in their show with Kuh Ledesma, Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano and Martin Nievera.

It’s so much fun to see Regine at this early point in her career. She really held back and when she finally pulls out the stops, and blows the roof off with RV power & range you can see why she is LEGEND🎉

I was in 5th grade when this was shown in GMA 7. And I started to admire and follow her since then. I remember singing you'll never walk alone the next day during my audition for our school choir and I got a standing ovation

I've always thought that I'm Now Telling You... is a sad song but with Regine's version I now know that this song has a lot of sass and confidence.
This was her outfit and her song at the Toyota Event early of 1989 ..... I was mesmerized by her rendition of this song and she was the most applauded from the other Pinoy Artists that night ( Sharon Cuneta , Kuh Ledesma , Martin Nievera , Gary Valenciano & Nonoy Zuniga ) ... Little did I know that she will bring this at the Asia Pacific Singing Competition later that year ( December 89 ).... Lo and behold ! she went on to win the Grand Prize .... A very big thank you to Ms Nanette Inventor who Recommended her to Channel 7 to represent the country.......

Goosebumps! We should have a Philippine museum with Filipinos who brought honor to the country and she is one of it. Filipinos who honed talents and skills to put our country in the map.
I just watched this for the first time and how my admiration for Ms Regine became complete. I even felt nervous when she was called 4th among 5 finalists. Even doubted she wud win it. Finally watching her belt out "you'll never walk alone" with her dynamics and incredible high octave, I began to sense that she would beat the others by a "mile". I didn't try to find out the winner at once but chose to watch this instead. Now I totally agree that she indeed is Asia's "Songbird".

After winning this contest, Regine at 19 was being hyped as "the one who will set a new standard of excellence in live PH concert performance." 23 years later, it's safe to say that Regine has fulfilled that prophecy.

I admired her already when I first saw and heard her sing as a contestant in ANG BAGONG KAMPEON a singing contest on GMA7 hosted by miss Pilita Corales ang the late Mr Bert "tawa" Marcelo in 1980s. When she sung Daan ako ngkamali, I myself predicted her to be a superstar. She won that night and became the champion for 8 straight weeks and and became the grand champion. The rest is history.
She used to be Chona Velasquez then, right?

Very talented, dala dala nya ang ikakaproud mo bilang isang pilipino. Kahit late Nako na iapriaciate sya, thank u regine dahil naging bahagi Ka Ng musica Ng pilipino. Ouch. I had selected songs via cd burn back in College at the internet cafe and one is a gift for my mom that I sent along with her when she went back to the province. The songs I chose I made sure she know of: English and Tagalog music but now that cd is missing I’m upset. That’s only a cd but it’s special to me for my mom.
