  • Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: The religious leaders in Jesus' time had a long list of rules regarding the Sabbath. When questioned, Jesus does not respond by dismissing the Sabbath, but rather redefines it - by dying on a cross. As Christians, we are able to enter into his rest and enjoy the same rest that God enjoyed after creation, by means of his works, not ours. The Sabbath is a blessing from God and one we will only enjoy if we understand it correctly.

Profound. Anti Slavery , Salvation and true peace in doing the acts of kindness. True peace is far beyond the physical but more towards bringing about a state of salvation to others. Sabbath is creating wealth in the kingdom of God.

The Pharisees question what gives Jesus the right to reap grain and heal people which challenges their version and interpretation of God's demands regarding the Sabbath! Jesus challenges their interpretation of the Sabbath and explains that it was made for people; but He never argues for overturning the Sabbath rather explaining how He affirms the Sabbath.

The sabbath is not on Sunday! Catholics changed the sabbath due to paganism and worship of Hermes the sun god! God made the sabbath and that was the 7th day which is Saturday. You can go to church on Sunday and that is fine. Preaches and teaches of God are man and should rest on saturday!! We have no right to change the sabbath day unless you are God!

“Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God." So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.”
      ‭‭Romans‬ ‭14:4-13‬ ‭ESV‬‬
If you want to keep the sabbath on Saturday then DO IT. But it is between each person and God so you are not meant to pass judgement on another believer. He will stand or fall before God, not you. So exactly - you’re not God. So don’t pass judgment as if you were.

Michael Williams the Westminster confession says sabbath was 7th day from creation to resurrection, then after resurrection. It was 1st day, or The Lords day. Sunday-Sabbath is catholic *and* reformed/Protestant. Calvin said it was fine to hold a sabbath 1 day in 7 no matter which day.

Interesting sermon, however, As a believer I am confused because Hos Word says to remember His sabbath and that sabbath never changed so isn't it rather arrogant of our flesh to say that we can choose any day as a sabbath? Does the clay tell the potter how to mold itself? Shalom

NO WHERE is it written that Jesus is our Sabbath. I am going to assume that you will come back to this reply with, Mat 11:28 “Come to Me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I shall give you rest", however, Jesus is not talking about the Sabbath as the word 'rest' here is not the same Greek word used for the Sabbath which is 'sabbat-on'. The Greek word for 'rrest used in Mt 11:28 is 'an-apauo' and is used in the sense of a ceasing from ones work, Rev 14:13 'And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, "Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them'", or a refreshing such as Paul uses in 1Co 16:18 "For they have refreshed my spirit and yours". Which is why Heb 4 states, when the Greek is properly interpreted, Heb 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest(sabbat-is-mos) to the people of God. 10 For he that is entered into his rest(kat-apauo), he also hath ceased(kat-apauo) from his own works, as God did from his. ... Indeed, there remains a keeping of the Sabbath for the people of God until they are dead in the grave resting for their labours in the flesh. Might I suggest you go back and take a refresher in how to read contextually because if one does not interpret His Word of Truth in the context in which it is written, one is going to, as Peter wrote, 2Pe 3:16 "as also in all his (Paul's) letters, speaking in them concerning these matters, in which some are hard to understand, which those who are untaught and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do also the other Scriptures (Moses, the Prophets, the Psalms). 17 You, then, beloved ones, being forewarned, watch, lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the delusion of the lawless." Shalom

LindaAnn there was never anything magical about the exact day of the week. not at all. Sabbath doesn't mean a specific weekday is mystical. It means our bodies and souls should cease from our labor. The Sabbath was made for man. We need the Sabbath rest to have a heart that is still before our God. Deut. says that we shall work 6 days and the 7th we shall rest. Now the Jews all went with the same schedule so that they would worship all together and rest together and so that worked for them. It was about the time frame of 6 days of work and one of rest. It didn't mean that a person could not bring praises before God on a Tuesday simply because it is called "Tuesday" and not "Saturday." If you study the scriptures cover to cover you will see how God intended His law for mankind. It has always been about the hearts of man toward God. I could go much deeper and specific but instead I challenge you to do a study on this with an open heart toward God. That's what I have been doing recently and God is making His desires known through His word.

cerngirl, God is not the author of confusion, nor does He or the words that go forth from His mouth change. I ask, do the 10 Commandments matter? Does not the 4th Commandment begin with the word "Remember"? Did not the Word of God establish the weekly cycle in the beginning? Therefore, is not 4th Commandment still valid for Christians today? Because, Is not Jesus the "Lord of "The Sabbath"? The word "Lord" in Greek is "kurios", the same Greek word used in the OT for the Name of God, YHWH (Jehovah), therefore, Jesus is THE YHWH of the Sabbath as it was He in the beginning whom ALL was created through & it was He Whom Adam & Eve rested with on the 7th day. Therefore, it is those whom honor Jesus's Sabbath Day, to rest in His Word, not doing our own pleasure, but doing the desire of God, as the Word of God prophesied through Isaiah, words which Jesus quoted, these who honor & hallow THE 7th Day as it was given at creation, these are the ones whom .... Isa 56:7 them I shall bring to My set-apart mountain, and let them rejoice in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their slaughterings are accepted on My altar, for My house is called a house of prayer for all the peoples." See Mt 21:13, Mk 11:17 & Lk 19:46. One God, One Law (Torah), One People as it was in the beginning, so shall it be forever. Shalom

LindaAnn jesus fulfilled the law set by God, through Moses to atone for our sins making us clean enough to be acceptable by God. he did this by taking our sins upon himself and dying a perfect sacrifice replacing ritualistic animal sacrifice and all other law that we used to be bound to. now our sins are distinguished by the state of our heart and judged by God. judge not lest ye be judged in the same way. it's perfected because it's a personal relationship. unfortunately we have people who disgrace themselves by caring too much about other people are doing. in this country we call them conservative Christians. see i just did the same thing to prove a point and that was wrong. I hope you will forgive me. hopefully you will because if you don't you are not forgiven. I forgive you if you don't though
      love and peace

Where God's law is absent, lawlessness & all kinds of immorality abounds. WOW, sounds like the nation we live in today, much different than that at its founding, why? Because the preachers on Saturdays & Sundays, actually preached Moses. And while those who preached, that Sunday was the Christian Sabbath, they at least upheld the day to be a Sabbath by which ALL in their communities rested from whatever occupation they were employed in. Maybe you should get to know the religious history of the nation you live in. Shalom oll.libertyfund.org/groups/54
