- If negotiations do not lead to a new contract by the end of the month, labor leaders say they could have their first strike in nearly 50 years.
Workers Unite !
They left out that dock workers are casual labor! Meaning they aren’t guaranteed anything except the period of work they started! Kinda important to know. They only work if the ships show up and they have the seniority in the hall to get the job they bid on. It’s a rough life and yes can be very lucrative but you have to have the right skill set( crane operator, toploader operator, rolling tire gantry operator) and work needs to be plentiful to get out of the hall or get ordered out as a driver or part of a gang. It’s not for everyone, it’s a dangerous job people get killed pretty frequently compared to other industries. Oh and it doesn’t matter what the weather is that ship has to get loaded or unloaded. And before you think everyone is getting big bank they aren’t most are just scraping by since the cost of living has gone through the roof.

@@ewash1984 You must not know anyone who works at the port. It’s harder to get into that union than the fire department.
@@Mostly_bad yeah me lol my dad was a longshoreman for 30+ years before he passed in 2011 and I’ve been in the industry for 17 years. It’s all about who you know to get in there
