Best MGB video on the web! This what these cars were designed for. Back in the early 70's I had a highly tuned 67 Midget for a while followed by a 1966 MGB GT in stock trim lastly a mild tune Spitfire. But the BEST by far was a 64 MGB roadster I built for my then best girl now wife of 40plus years. It was sweet....larger SU's ...1 3/4". I polished the head and ports by hand. The cam was a one off ground by a local racer/machinist. Monza exhaust ...re-arched springs better sway bars...the stronger trans out of a later B but sadly no overdrive. Larger tires on GT rims...they were wider than stock 64 wheels. I painted it myself.."Glacier White" It really is the "sound" that holds my memories...blasting down an old railway causeway converted to tarmack at 100mph my god. Estimated HP was in the 110 to 120 range.....a joke by today's standards but the excitement metre was off the scale. Few know these jewels came with steel cranks...very good rods and good balance from the factory. This why you can have so much fun for so little money. Kids are grown and gone so I'm building another Spitfire but really want another B. Thanks for the inspiration.
I am in the process of a similar build on my 1964 ( rust free) Iris Blue (original factory racing color at LeMans). Building up a 5 main motor and contemplating a 5 speed rather than sourcing a factory gearbox w/o'drive.Fun cars. Relatively cheap to build and bullet proof.
I must have watched this a half dozen times in the last few days... alright, alright, FINE; I'll go resurrect my '79! Hot damn, the sound of this one - mine already has a Weber DGV 32/36 in it with a stainless exhaust, but it ended up getting parked twenty years ago before we finished the project, so I've never actually heard it sing in that configuration. Hang on tight, bank account! Cheers to Tyson and his dad - I hope you guys are still rocking this thing up and down HWY 1 :) EDIT (a year later): Revisiting this video while it's cold outside. Got mine up and running last year - basically needed a general service and tune-up, new consumables, and drilling some strategically-placed little holes in the carburetor to get the DGV to play nice with the 1800cc engine. Holy buckets, such fun!
That was one fabulous sounding B series engine. There are fewer greater sounds in motoring than a finally tuned B and that is probably one of the best.
I agree this is very good. It is nearly identical in sound to the A series in my Sprite. More or less the best part of the car is the sound combined with the immense sense of speed.
Mindful Music they’re cheap to own too. Pretty reliable when maintained, affordable parts, and insurance is dirt cheap. I pay less than $100/year for my ‘67 B with Hagerty.
I believe the siamese exhaust port (for cylinders 2 & 3) adds to the wonderful sound the B-series motors make. The Sprite & Midget A-series engine shares that design and exhaust character.
cool ride.. a good friend of mine was given an MG B for his 15th or 16th birthday and I still remember the noise that thing made taking a ride in it. Sounds like you are doing every bit of double the actual speed at all times.
An extremely reminiscent sound to my 62 Sprite. The cracks and pops on the down shifts, and great on cam noise running up. British Sports cars are an unmatched visceral experience.
was in one the other day making 180bhp out of a fully race spec engine with full stripped interior and straight cut gears, it was amazingly fast and grippy a blast to drive
My 1st car was a 76 midget in high school, so I have lots of love for mg's. I would love to see one on your show with a hyabusa engine in it! Thanks keep up the fun work.
hey Matt, saw a video on vinwiki the other day and was surprised how skinny you were then, glad you a getting back to a better you, i wish you all the best in a better lifestyle. Love your content even tho ive missed alot of it due to time restraints in life, i came to admire you through your work with automation(im a kiwi myself)thanks for showing off NZ auto culture. Much love and support from the little island at the bottom of the planet
MrFraserLaser I started making videos at the skinniest I ever was. At the time that photo was taken I had just lost 100 lbs, going from 330 lbs to 230 lbs and my adult low weight. I was only able to maintain that weight for about a month; it required 90 minuet daily workouts, and it was impossible with my travel schedule. Doing my best now and down to 255
Huw Williams it’s just different fun. Im 30 years old and have a 66 MGB and a 70 Camaro. The smell and sounds and vibrations are fun, and you’re always getting attention, especially the MG, it looks much more expensive than it is so people that aren’t in the know think you’re in something really special. Sometimes it’s nice to be in the comfort of a modern car like my wife’s WRX, but there’s days where that just won’t do and I have to drive the B
Dream MG. My first car when I was 16 was a 78 MGB (at that time the car was already 20 years old!). Nowhere as nice as this one though. It was mint OEM condition but super slow and soft.
Love those Rover/Lotus k series. Insane throttle response , easy to tune. With right mods no head gasket worries. My uncle had a Caterham evo with I think a 230hp k series.
These old British sports cars were long stroke/small bore engines, I think that played a part in the throaty note they had. Modern designs are all about large bore/short stroke/high rpm.
Love these one takes. Vintage racers are where it's at! Wonder if Matt has ever driven a Datsun "Sports" 1600 or 2000 (SRL311). I know there's a scene up in Napa... would love to see his thoughts on one.
Cool car, in much better shape than many I saw back in the 70's in shops I worked, stock many didn't see the maintenance they should have had and had gacked motors, the wiring is often a problem as well. Its cool though, a car you can be in full race mode in and nobody else knows lol.. :) Light and nimble though and the burbling sounds are pretty fun.
Absolutely wonderful car and what a fucking GOOD SOUND! Getting interior details must be carrying over from One Wakes because all of this sounded crisp. Good job all involved! What happened to wheel wells then? Falling out or something else? More classics like this please! Either that or ya know, the Dodge Demon some time :P.
I think Matt's side of the car was faster ... the owner had a lot of drag with all that hair ;-) Nice review and looks like a blast of a little car, would love to have one.
Traditional headers and generic 18” glasspack muffler but the sound is really provided by the engine. That exhaust on a stock engine and cam will not sound as good
Austin Healey 3000?! That must have hurt when he sold it for a couple of bucks, considering they are almost E-Type expensive now... Such a shame that the prices went up the way they did.
Chester I recently purchased a 71 MGB. I brought it in right away for new exhaust and told the guys to just install a resonator for now. If it’s to loud we can install a muffler later. One month and several hundred miles later, it still has just a resonator on it. Sounds very similar to this one. My son said “no way are we putting a muffler on this thing” 🤣
Been bugging my neighbour who s got one without engine sitting in his garage,i need it to put one of my engine in there, would make a scary allmotor k series out of it
If you liked this"B", you'll love mine, if I ever get mine sorted and nice (tube frame, custom A-arms front, coilovers all around, discs all around, 4-link rear, 4-speed- heres the kicker-500hp SBC-alum.rods, .600 lift solid roller cam, etc.) I'll bring it down from Northern California
Hey, if you want to know more about my MGB go to MGExperience (web site), forums (engine swaps), I have a couple of threads running there (slightly modified), click on picture of my "B" will take you to my home page, the journal documents the build up to 1 year ago, been just driving it alot since then, plan on doing some work this winter, entries will restart then----Chuck
Someone is selling a '67 B with a turbo escort engine in it not to far from me... Trust me when I say, you really, *really* don't want to see an MGB with an engine swap xD
The exhaust note while peppy at times sounded a bit like a dirt bike... which no British sports car should sound like (although it could have been the miking) For anyone doing one up I recommend Maniflow. They are a UK company that makes racing exhausts. I bought a complete kit from them for my 66 Sprite - their long throw header, exhaust and muffler. WHAT a sound. It makes a burbling growl like an angry kitty, and it increased HP as well. Makes the car a joy to drive. God do I pity the young and the electric golf carts they call automobiles.
that lil engine is haulin a lot of beef, damn
No wonder it got hot...
LOL MATT FARRAH IS FAT XDDDD LE EPIC TROLL ^_^
through my eyes , that’s why they call it “”hauling ass”!

Glad to see like minded young people getting involved in these British sports cars. They are easy to work on and very rewarding to drive. Nicely done!
Wow these are pretty fairly priced. I wouldn't mind owning one of these built like this sometime in the near future for a weekend car.
Mindful Music they’re cheap to own too. Pretty reliable when maintained, affordable parts, and insurance is dirt cheap. I pay less than $100/year for my ‘67 B with Hagerty.
Its the nicest NA 4cyl i have driven yet. The 1.8 sounds so awesome!!!
Our MG sound a bit different but it does exactly the same pops and bangs^^
I could listen to this all day. One of my friends in high school had an MGB. I used to really enjoy driving around in that thing!
Love seeing this guy his cars and attitude are great !
Who the heck thumbs down a video like this? Great work and great fun, impressive sound quality given the open nature of this one.
Out of all the reviews you have done .... this impresses me most.
You don't need crazy HP and deep pockets to have a really enjoyable car.
Hell yes! I've always wanted a tuned up, angry little British sports car with that kind of exhaust note and a rollbar
Looks and sounds like the one wakes are helping with the sound on the convertible one takes.
That exhaust note is naughty
Oh the memories, I had a 1964 MGB red just like that one, I wish I had never sold it.
Stop talking about it, and go find her!
C'mon man! You'll have my support - Us B owners have gotta stick together ;)
I believe the siamese exhaust port (for cylinders 2 & 3) adds to the wonderful sound the B-series motors make. The Sprite & Midget A-series engine shares that design and exhaust character.

"What speed are we doin'?"
"I dunno, speedo has crapped out again..."
That situation just happened to me last month in my father's '67 B.
Good times.
+Brodie Bennett (BrodieMB) haha over the winter mine stopped working too
Even with 130 hp i'd prefer this over any modern roadster, what an awesome feel good car!
Matt, thanks for showing us MG & British Car Guys some love! Great video, and great car!
And you hit on a major intention of the designers of the MGB: it's meant to be really easy to drive.
An extremely reminiscent sound to my 62 Sprite. The cracks and pops on the down shifts, and great on cam noise running up.
British Sports cars are an unmatched visceral experience.
Small vintage cars are fun, I'd like to see a BMW Isetta one take!
I think a go kart would be faster
JDM Originals a bicycle would be faster
Xplosion51 you should find new women in your life, because I know plenty who are way into cars.
Sarah -n- Tuned appreciate the comment.. however already have one...
JDM Originals Have one?
was in one the other day making 180bhp out of a fully race spec engine with full stripped interior and straight cut gears, it was amazingly fast and grippy a blast to drive
Influx skyline ad at the beginning of this video was sick. Great short little film.
Thanks for the morning uploads. You sir are a champion among men.
Sweet! Love the little cars, they need love too.
My 1st car was a 76 midget in high school, so I have lots of love for mg's. I would love to see one on your show with a hyabusa engine in it! Thanks keep up the fun work.
Your Midget was in high school ?
this are the kind of cars i love the most. small and nimble :) and MG's are great little British classic cars, very popular in europe :)
That smile comes free with every vintage racer
hey Matt, saw a video on vinwiki the other day and was surprised how skinny you were then, glad you a getting back to a better you, i wish you all the best in a better lifestyle. Youre doing great man, keep it up
Nothin' beats a good 'ol MGB...
They can be built to handle any situation - pebble beach, fast road, race rally etc.
Am I getting old? I love the old stuff now - just seem like more fun.
So glad I'm building my Austin Healey with a race cam and Weber carb
My twin brother and I are restoring a 1967 mgb Roadster
Dream MG. My first car when I was 16 was a 78 MGB (at that time the car was already 20 years old!). Nowhere as nice as this one though. It was mint OEM condition but super slow and soft.
That's because it was a Rubber Bumper B with around 70 BHP compared to the pre 74s with 98 BHP
Coolest car yet!! Always wanted an LS7 MGBGT on Indy tubular subframes , has coilovers 6 pot AP brakes in satin gunmetal with blister wide arches.
If that is what you want, why not buy some Detroit Iron and not butcher a decent Brit car ?
Amazing! More special cars like this!
I'm putting a 157 HP Rover K series engine into my MGB GT. Should go like stink.
It'll go like a bat outta hell
Love those Rover/Lotus k series. Insane throttle response , easy to tune. With right mods no head gasket worries. My uncle had a Caterham evo with I think a 230hp k series.
The MGBGTV8 is the best lazy to drive economical, lightweight and almost unlimited tuning if you want more power.
Why is it no modern 4 cylinders sound this good?
I don't think manufacturers have any pride left, just profit motives.
emissions and sound regulations
The loss of carburetors and the addition of catalytic converters
These old British sports cars were long stroke/small bore engines, I think that played a part in the throaty note they had. Modern designs are all about large bore/short stroke/high rpm.
The 1.4L MultiAir Turbo sounds pretty good. Not as raspy, but it's still throaty.
Still can't beat the sound of a nice carbureted engine though.
Nicely set up car. Must be a blast to drive
Love these one takes. Vintage racers are where it's at! Wonder if Matt has ever driven a Datsun "Sports" 1600 or 2000 (SRL311). I know there's a scene up in Napa... would love to see his thoughts on one.
Taylor Ashworth I’ll have mine done soon and it will blow this MG away. I’m a bit smaller than Matt in both directions so he won’t fit lol
Love a classic British car. You don’t see these often.
Beautiful car
wow ok im suprised hahah My parents have one of these wrotting away in a storage unit and this has inspired me to get it running!!
The soundtrack of Petrolicious. That sound track has really grown on me
I wish my dad was about that track life
You should do more of these types of videos again.
Jesus looks like you are FLYING! LOL Love that lil car
love the small vintage cars so much!!!!
My Dad's got one of these, too. His gearbox is out of an 80s Ford Sierra.
i cant wait till i pick up my 2nd mg in a couple weeks this one is road worthy the PO raced it at vintage races my 1st mg is in many pieces
Best video I've seen for a while. What a sound.
More of this please
Yes
My brother and I is restoring a 1967 MGB right now
Cool car.
Lovely. It's so happy =D
Yes! Great ride Matt!
What was going on with the far right gauge during the last u-turn to head back?
Rob H that’s a vacuum gauge
I’m currently restoring a mk1 MGB gt !
Can't wait for the snow to clear. I'm taking my GT out as soon as it's possible
Nicely executed, beautiful vrrrrrm sounds - what a total package! Driver's delite (well, in this case viewers delite, but that's okay)! :-)
Makes a lovely sound.
sounds dope...
"Build sheet below because we're not doing the other thing any more" 😂😂 fuck wheel well lmao
"we're not doing the other thing any more" something happen with Wheelwell?
What exhaust do you have on that? Tourist Trophy? Is it headers + exhaust?
Traditional headers and generic 18” glasspack muffler but the sound is really provided by the engine. That exhaust on a stock engine and cam will not sound as good
I think Matt needs to buy a British car. My dad had a 67 Austin Healey 3000. So fun
Jon Thomas he has an aston
Yeah but a Vanquish isn't the marvelous, glorious, thunderous, smelly beast that is the Big Healey. Matt in a Works Big Healey would be an awesome!
Austin Healey 3000?!
That must have hurt when he sold it for a couple of bucks, considering they are almost E-Type expensive now...
Such a shame that the prices went up the way they did.
Personally I am not into vintage cars but I always enjoy one takes with older cars most, the feeling is contagious
you will come to the dark side one day, probably after you drive an old alfa 105 or something
Awsome car
One more wheelwell?
Weiss watch looks nice 👍
Matt Farrah doesn't know who Paddy Hopkirk is?
Any idea what exhaust setup is on the car?
It is a 2.25" pipe, single exit, with a 18" glass pack towards the rear. Very built engine though, that is mostly what you're hearing
Thanks! What's been done to the engine, besides the obvious?
Oh awesome! That's an awesome car, thanks for showing us around it!
I can't recall a four cylinder engine that sounded better than this.
Paddy won the Monte Carlo Rally in a Mini Cooper in 1964. Still going strong attenting classic Mini events around Europe.
TheSmokingTire:
You need to get and play with GoPro Fusion as soon as it is released and play with OverCapture. I think it would be very cool.
Awesome car.
Would love to have that MGB.
Sounds like a god car :o
Great car to learn to drive fast in.
I’m just here to watch Matt get in this tiny car
Love these little MG's :)
I'm vintage... I appreciate it...
im sure the MGB was a hard top and the MG was the soft/ convertible?
MG was the brand (marque). B was the open car; B-GT was the hardtop.
1800lbs thats so light, i want one now
Cool car, nice build, but the factory works car raced with hardtops and the stock dash.
"We're not doing the other thing anymore"? No more wheelwells?
Classic
Been bugging my neighbour who s got one without engine sitting in his garage,i need it to put one of my engine in there, would make a scary allmotor k series out of it
What's sad is my stock 5 speed mazda3 probably has the same gear ratio.
Sounds a bit like a rotary engine
MAN, I really miss my MGB!!! :(
"It rides pretty good!" - Matt Farrah about any car with 4 wheels
Put this in your mind 1900lbs 250whp k24/k20z1
If you liked this"B", you'll love mine, if I ever get mine sorted and nice (tube frame, custom A-arms front, coilovers all around, discs all around, 4-link rear, 4-speed- heres the kicker-500hp SBC-alum.rods, .600 lift solid roller cam, etc.) I'll bring it down from Northern California
Please send him an email, I'd love to see it.
Hey, if you want to know more about my MGB go to MGExperience (web site), forums (engine swaps), I have a couple of threads running there (slightly modified), click on picture of my "B" will take you to my home page, the journal documents the build up to 1 year ago, been just driving it alot since then, plan on doing some work this winter, entries will restart then----Chuck
i want to see an MG with a S2000 motor in it
Someone is selling a '67 B with a turbo escort engine in it not to far from me...
Trust me when I say, you really, *really* don't want to see an MGB with an engine swap xD
Kenny McRae so did matt lol
What about a Triumph GT6 (hardtop Spit essentially) with a 3s-ge and 6-speed out of a Toyota Altezza? That's my current project car.
SR20det would be easier since they already have a Nissan 5-speed... then, turbo noises!
There are a few spitfires with that swap. Sick
God do I pity the young and the electric golf carts they call automobiles.
great car
