Great point! Many don't realize that Smeagol was in fact a hobbit and not just "hobbit-like". I suppose we should amend our phrasing to say Bilbo was the oldest in the history of the Shire.

@@NerdoftheRings Playing devil's advocate one could argue that at some point Gollum was no longer really a hobbit; the ring had changed him into something else.
Gandalf must have been worrying about who to bring on as the burglar and thought, “what about that young Baggins fellow?” and went all the way to Bag-End only to find out he isn’t there and is waiting for the Elves and then thought, “Oh, he’s PERFECT.”
My favourite hobbit. I find him incredibly inspiring. As someone else had commented, Hobbits can move mountains, but they move hearts more. Thank you, Nerd of the Rings!

@@TheSorrel they apparently age slower, albeit only slightly, which makes it incredibly annoying to gouge. Like... a Hobbit reaches adulthood at age 30, or something? So that's an equivalent of someone in their late teens, I assume? Pippin was 29 in Lotr. So a 44-y-o Hobbit must be like... a 30-y-old?

I think we like Bilbo because he has that nak for adventure as many of us do and yet he acts upon these thoughts. He has this personality trait whle also being grounded by the customs of Hobbits. A bridge, if you will, between the rest of the world and the Shire
People love hobbits for their simple, jolly, and indulgent nature; they're a symbol of contentedness in a simpler time and place. People love Bilbo for his adventurous nature and the courage to forsake social image and tradition to live his own way. One can love both for different reasons, but love them all the same.
Since when I watched the hobbit movies with my dad the first time now years ago, I’m in love with Bilbo and his tales more than any other character of the middle earth, I’ve since been fond of Tolkien’s universe and currently I’m reading the Silmarillion and I plan of reading all of the hobbit and lord of the rings!
I know it may seem like an odd question, but I've always wondered what could have happened had Beorn been given The Ring for safekeeping? Maybe around the time Bilbo and Thorin's company were at his house Bilbo tells Gandalf about The Ring he found and Gollum. Gandalf may very well ask Beorn to keep it for the time being just until they know what ring it is? Beorn was known as an exceptionally powerful being and lived an isolated lifestyle with seemingly very little in terms of desire, I wonder if The Ring would even be able to tempt him? How much stronger would he become and could he begin to skin change into stronger creatures? Just an odd thought
Beorn would’ve been a horrible keeper of the ring. He wasn’t an exceptionally powerful in the sense of other exceptionally powerful beings of Middle-Earth, he could shape shift and was physically strong that’s about it. His people were almost all wiped out by Orcs, he himself was enslaved by Orcs. A truly strong Orc party with high numbers could’ve taken him out if they ever tried especially if the ring was on line.

I completely forgot you were posting today until I got the notification! Bilbo Baggins is an amazing hobbit to cover, now we just need videos for Frodo and Sam. :) LOTR and the fandom is so amazing
Just bought an 8 set of the books. Already had 2 of the LOTR books then found the hobbit and the last LOTR book at a thrift store and bought them, then the 8 books came in. Started reading the Hobbit yesterday, and already I know it is going to be a great book, and I love the way it starts off in a lighthearted way. I'm creating a spiritual successor of sorts to Tolkien's books, yin and yang, light and dark, summer and winter, adventure-romance and horror-tragedy. It doesn't use the fantasy elements of elves and orcs and dragons most fantasy books use. I've been wanting to create epic fantasies since i was a young hobbit, and 10 years later the skeleton of the world and many muscles have been formed. Tolkien will be my textbook of what a good fantasy epic should be. One will be called Sable, 1st book, and the other will be called Noble.
Well done. I love this video. Bilbo had arguably the best story for a Hobbit. Although he didn’t do it himself, Bilbo played a part in Middle Earth finally being rid of Sauron. If Bilbo never found the One Ring, his adventure with the dwarves would’ve failed miserably and most likely killed him. Also, if Bilbo never found the Ring, the entire fate of Middle Earth would’ve been quite dark.
Love seeing a video about Bilbo! He's probably my favorite hobbit. While we're on the topic of this story, I'd love to see a video on the Arkenstone and other jewels and objects precious to the dwarves. The Arkenstone is definitely one of my favorite Middle Earth items.
Great topic suggestion! The Arkenstone is a mysterious object for sure! I always loved the theory that it was actually a silmaril. Unfortunately, Tolkien debunked that one...I still like it though. haha.
@@NerdoftheRings Which Silmaril? Earendil has one. Maglor threw his into the Sea. Maedhros cast himself into a fiery pit. This last one seems to be the only possibility for that theory. Very good video and descrptions..art work and music brilliant..good to understand Bilbo a little more hes kind of like a lucky Hobbit..Frodo not so much ..a shame that there where no more Baggins heirs after he and Frodo left for the gray heavens.
I think in the movie Bilbo, when he and Frodo met in Rivendell, says that he planned to go back to the Lonely Mountain, see Laketown and visit Mirkwood again, but couldn't due to age. The movie also makes it look like he arrived maybe a week before Frodo. Not terrible changes that negatively affect the plot, but the movie easily glances over the fact that many years pass between Bilbo leaving and Frodo setting out on his journey, making it look like a few days or weeks at best.
For what's pretty much the grandfather of modern fantasy and has impacted fiction to such a diagree only Star Wars could really match it, Tolken made a really interesting decision to not have the main hero be the heroic knight that slays dragons, but a small hobbit that gets out of most problems with his mind and honestly isn't much of a fighter.
Ian Holm and Martin Freeman were both great as Bilbo. Bilbo saying goodbye to Thorin was really heartbreaking. If only the Hobbit films were 2 films instead of 3 films. I really liked most of the Hobbit films; it's just that the Hobbit is a smaller story than LOTR and couldn't support 3 full films.
minor mention that the Hobbit films weren't 3 films of 2 hour lengths each, but rather 3 films of nearly 3 hours each (both theatrical and extended, give or take some 20 minutes). Compare that to a fan edit like the Maple Films one which tells the whole story in 4 hours. To say that they've stretched the book thin, like butter over too much bread, is an understatement
0:38 somehow this version of Gandalf fighting and killing the Balrog inside the mines of Moria is WAY more badass to imagine 😂 it’s like imagining your super old great grandfather doing it 😂😂 Not to mention all the other insane things that he does during Bilbos journey AND the fellowship and everything else!
@@GM-db4bv You can blame the bureaucrats at New Line for that. Wasn't Jackson's idea by a long shot. That said, I still didn't have a problem with her. Why? Because an escapist doesn't sweat the small stuff and channels their energy in pure enjoyment of a movie for what it is.
“There’s mud on the carpet! Th-they’ve pillaged the pantry- I don’t know what they’ve done to the bathroom, all I know they’d destroy the plumbing… I don’t understand what’re they doing in my house!” Bilbo’s Baggins side “I think I’m ready for another adventure.” Bilbo’s Took side That’s one great character advancement right there!
Finally a video on this character with which the Lord of The Rings fantasy world kicked off and that is why is probably the most famous and iconic character of the Tolkien universe! Wonderful video melon ! Kepp it up!
I love this channel. I recently came across the LOTR audiobook with most of the cast and original music from the movies. I enjoyed all 36 hours !! This was such a treat to hear the poetry and songs, I have to admit I had been skipping over the last few years. I am thankful I found your channel. I watched your interview with John Reese-Davies. I loved watching your and his enthusiasm for all things Tolkien.
Very good video. I was always curious about exactly what adventures Bilbo had on the way home between leaving the elf king in Mirkwood and reaching Beorn's home. He journeys along the north edge of Mirkwood, by the Grey Mountains. In The Hobbit it says 'Bilbo travels in the company of the wizard and Beorn, and although most of the goblins had been killed in the battle of the five armies, the lands were still very wild in those days, and he had many adventures on his journey. But with Gandalf and Beorn with him, he was never in serious danger'. An interesting sentence. And that is all it tells of his travels, but it hints that Bilbo's trek around north Mirkwood was not quite as peaceful as a stroll across the Shire, and seems to imply that together with Beorn and Gandalf, the three of them had an interesting journey, with eventful things happening . . . Northern Bandit Chief: 'Right lads, we all set for the ambush?' Bandit: 'Are they many of them chief?' Northern Bandit Chief: 'Don't worry yourself, there's only three of them. One looks like a child, one's some sort of woodcutter, a stupid country bumkin by the looks of him, and the other is an old man who needs a walking stick. No trouble at all. We outnumber them two to one. They come along the path, we jump out and rob them. Should be over in moments!'
@@NerdoftheRings Me too! How long does it take for you to make such video on average? I watched a lot of videos in a row and wonder everytime how much time it took to make them

Video Idea: Theory about what would have happened if Merry and Pippin never where in the Fellowship of the Ring. I've been reading the book and only now come to realize their big impact. From Pippin awakening the Balrog and thus Gandalf dying, to them getting captured and only through that get the Ents assistance, to Pippin using the Palantir and setting things in motion and more more and more would love to hear your theory
This is the third time watching this video. Most excellent. Hope you do the life and travels of Frodo Baggins, and Samwise Gamgee. The movies never say what happens to Sam after Frodo sails for the undying lands. I believe that would be two excellent videos.
Sweet! :) Just finished re-reading 'The Hobbit' yesterday in preparation for LOTR. Caught myself thinking when Bilbo was traveling back with Gandalf and Beorn: "Damn, gotta find out if NotR did complete travels of him"))
Very nice video. Thank you! As I understand it, if one is invited by the Valar to live in the Undying Lands, one becomes immortal. Accordingly, Bilbo and Frodo will be spared the last journey as long as Middle Earth exists. I never heard of Bilbo dying in Aman.
@@NerdoftheRings Not in my book. The three houses of the Edain were blessed with three times longer life as a gift from the Valar, but they were not allowed to enter Aman because they are mortal. Only immortals are allowed to do this - hence The Undying Lands. So it is only logical that Bilbo and the rest of the rascals are still up to this day.
@@sinikoncar7838 Here's the words of Tolkien himself from letter #325. I should've looked this up earlier to clarify, but just got to my computer... "As for Frodo or other mortals, they could only dwell in Aman for a limited time - whether brief or long. The Valar had neither the power nor the right to confer "immortality" upon them. Their sojorn was a "purgatory", but one of peace and healing and they would eventually pass away (die at their own desire and of free will) to destinations of which the Elves knew nothing."
Thank you for this. Been far too long since I last read The Hobbit, and LotR is long overdue for a re-read. This ties things up nicely, thank you so much.
I am curious, did Tolkien ever mention what Bilbo's family actually did in the shire? It's said that they were respectable and in the adaptations it's portrayed as Bilbo being wealthy, even before the gold he brought from Erebor.

Not to mention all the other insane things that he does during Bilbos journey AND the fellowship and everything else!
Always happy to see you upload!!!
Always happy to see you comment as well! :)
Great video! I love your content. I would love to see one about Merry and Pippin
Already got you covered! ruclips.net/video/Ke_2mfL3Hf0/видео.html
@@NerdoftheRings oh thanks! I don't know how I didn't spot that one
video suggestions:
-What if Thorin had met Gollum, and took the one Ring? -
-A ranking of all the Battles of Arda
-Top 5 worst Middle-earth characters
@@GM-db4bv You can blame the bureaucrats at New Line for that. Wasn't Jackson's idea by a long shot.
That said, I still didn't have a problem with her. Why? Because an escapist doesn't sweat the small stuff and channels their energy in pure enjoyment of a movie for what it is.
@@25Erix hard agree
“There’s mud on the carpet! Th-they’ve pillaged the pantry- I don’t know what they’ve done to the bathroom, all I know they’d destroy the plumbing… I don’t understand what’re they doing in my house!” Bilbo’s Baggins side
“I think I’m ready for another adventure.” Bilbo’s Took side
That’s one great character advancement right there!
I almost teared up at the end. Long Live Bilbo!
It’s about time!
Hi, just wanted to say loving the videos think ive looked at all of them now. Great info so just wanted to say thanks mate.
Great work your videos are awesome! Look forward to a new one every week.
Love it! How about a video on the origins and in-depth look into the orcs themselves? And any famous (infamous) orcs throughout history?
And that is all it tells of his travels, but it hints that Bilbo's trek around north Mirkwood was not quite as peaceful as a stroll across the Shire, and seems to imply that together with Beorn and Gandalf, the three of them had an interesting journey, with eventful things happening . . .
Northern Bandit Chief: 'Right lads, we all set for the ambush?'
Bandit: 'Are they many of them chief?'
Northern Bandit Chief: 'Don't worry yourself, there's only three of them. One looks like a child, one's some sort of woodcutter, a stupid country bumkin by the looks of him, and the other is an old man who needs a walking stick. No trouble at all. We outnumber them two to one. They come along the path, we jump out and rob them. Should be over in moments!'
Man Arwen cold as ice..... "he's looking ancient for his own kind" 😅
Thanks for another amazing video, hobbit-lore of the finest quality!
Another great video in the channel of the Nerd of the Rings
Nice video bro !!!
Also In the future could u do a video on the great eagles please ?
I was hoping for a cover of Leonard Nimoy’s Bilbo Baggins song.
I'd never heard of that, so looked for it: as soon as I put "Leonard Nimoy" into search, the rest came up. Thank you!
dude i just want to say thank you for the work you do. These videos have opened my eyes to how incredible and deep this series actually is
Bilbo: Receives an Elven dagger.
Me: More like a letter opener, really..
You mean a spider opener.
Yes, I share a birthday with Bilbo.
I always finish these videos with watery eyes. Can't be the only one xD
Thank you so much for your work.
The balance between likes and dislikes tells all about the quality of your video's! Great job keep it up mate:)
I love you 💘! Your content brings me great joy!
Thanks so much! I'm always glad to hear that my work resonates with Tolkien fans!
love your videos
Thanks so much for watching and subbing!
@@NerdoftheRings Me too! How long does it take for you to make such video on average? I watched a lot of videos in a row and wonder everytime how much time it took to make them
oooh i am so excited for this video! i absolutely love this series, I can watch them over and over, especially while falling asleep. this is a great addition. thanks for all the great content
We always appreciate your hard work and dedication towards these videos. Love from Sri Lankan fan of you from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰🤝🏴.
The only man to truly give up the One Ring after carrying it for a significant period of time.
Rider of barrels, Burglar of legend. What a hero
Bilbo Swaggins has no map.
Bilbo Swaggins needs no map.
love it
Video Idea: Theory about what would have happened if Merry and Pippin never where in the Fellowship of the Ring.
I've been reading the book and only now come to realize their big impact.
From Pippin awakening the Balrog and thus Gandalf dying, to them getting captured and only through that get the Ents assistance, to Pippin using the Palantir and setting things in motion and more more and more
would love to hear your theory
I think I am quite ready for another adventure
This is the third time watching this video. Most excellent. Hope you do the life and travels of Frodo Baggins, and Samwise Gamgee. The movies never say what happens to Sam after Frodo sails for the undying lands. I believe that would be two excellent videos.
Thag you very buch - Bilbo Baggins for this video to Nerd of the Rings
Sweet! :) Just finished re-reading 'The Hobbit' yesterday in preparation for LOTR. Caught myself thinking when Bilbo was traveling back with Gandalf and Beorn: "Damn, gotta find out if NotR did complete travels of him"))
Excited for this one!
These kinds of stories always make me wanna play a LOTR DnD like game. Just some kind of adventure set it Middle Earth
That just blew me away, I think I'll go for an adventure 😊🧝♂️🏴
Love the artwork and the travels thank you so much for sharing!!
The ending of your video made me cry again. 😭
Your channel really is the end all be all for Tolkien! Thank you.
I love these so much. Great work and thank you for the content!
Very nice video. Thank you! As I understand it, if one is invited by the Valar to live in the Undying Lands, one becomes immortal. Accordingly, Bilbo and Frodo will be spared the last journey as long as Middle Earth exists. I never heard of Bilbo dying in Aman.
On the contrary, mortals remain mortal, so they would still die. Gimli, Frodo, and Sam would die in Valinor as well.
@@NerdoftheRings because death was the "Gift of Men," given by Eru, and the Valar had no power to revoke that.
I love your videos!
Thanks for explaining everything in great detail!
😀😁
Belladonna got me feeling feelings
Thank you for this. Been far too long since I last read The Hobbit, and LotR is long overdue for a re-read. This ties things up nicely, thank you so much.
He is my favourite hobbit! I
Thanks for the video
awesome vid Matt enjoyed it could you please do one for either Balin or Gimli
There's one for Gimli ruclips.net/video/qNQg49ZML6o/видео.html
but i'm not sure about Balin.
I am curious, did Tolkien ever mention what Bilbo's family actually did in the shire? It's said that they were respectable and in the adaptations it's portrayed as Bilbo being wealthy, even before the gold he brought from Erebor.
Hedge fund managers,,,
The brave little hobbit that we all, even Leonard Nimoy, admire.
Nice work, as usual.
i’m saving all these vids so when i have to time so i can binge all these
I get sad at the end of these videos and idk why, it’s just kinda sad that they sail off never to be seen again…
