      True. Compared to many other places, Copenhagen may be a bit special and a whole new experience to people who are not used to a place like Copenhagen.
      I grew up in Copenhagen in the 1960's and 19'70's.
      I have lived all over the world since 1990 and I am currently only visiting Denmark once per year. I am a little bit surprised about how much Copenhagen has changed from the city I grew up with and left in 1990. A lot of things have become a lot better but from personal experience, I am sad to say that some things have also developed in a wrong direction if I have to be blunt.
      However, all included, Copenhagen is still a wonderful city but any foreigner visiting Denmark should definitely try to cover more than just Copenhagen. Denmark is in many ways a beautiful country.

      in denmark it's all over the country, even the countryside think this model in while planing. in the countryside its the curragh of being rural, and not. a city. urban sprawl destroyed the countryside. and take away its beauty, we akturly have laws prohibiting building on beaches building in the forests and so forward, yes we open a cat door opening to allow some building but under control NO highrising allowed ........ no nay never in denmark....... only cities can bild high rising and limed places.
      urban planning is also about the rural areas being rural with mean no urban sprawl, the danich land value tax system makes urban sprawl imposibil... land is not for free. and natur has its value for being natur.
      i live in the countryside in denmark, and love the pureness of the danish natur

      The biles are workhorses. If you don't need to bike more than maybe 5-6 km each way from home to work, through the city with more stops and slower pace - you will often go for a more comfortable "old fashioned" bike. If you bike far - from other cities and into Copenhagen - people will often buy more modern sports bikes.

They say that the program was made together with an TV channel from Quebec which is the french speaking part of Canada. So my guess as to why Claus Meyer is speaking french, is that the producers found out that he spoke french and was happy to have someone in the program, who they didn't have to dub in french, when they showed it on a french speaking channel.

    Amsterdam is now bicycle city no. 1 in the world, and we won't give it up! I really like Copenhagen and Amsterdam, they look very much alike (except the old architecture but the other parts are the same). I think you kind of stole our bike thing but ok... I think Dutch people have a connection with the Danes (and Swedes) because we also are making cities for the people and not for the cars. It is really fun to see that we've thought of the exact same thing! PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON AMSTERDAM!!!
    P.S. is Emelia van Hauen Dutch? Every name with van in it is a dutch name
    P.P.S. This "Hüge" word (39,20) in Danish is the only language I know that has a translation to the Dutch "gezellig".

      Some people in Denmark have names from other parts of Europe (and the world). This is probably due to the fact that migration, for several reasons, has always been a thing. Part of my name, f.ex. is German; "Richter". I feel strong connection to the dutch as well. I think we have much in common. So much in fact that Holland could be a part of Scandinavia if those pesky Germans didn't reside inbetween :P

    I think it is great about the bikes, but I think one of the major reasons that it works so well is that the city is very flat... I'm not sure it would work in a city with not so level terrain...

    • @TainDK
      @TainDK 9 лет назад +1

      To that i can say it does... Copenhagen is not "unique" as a danish city with bikes... All Danes bikes (very few does not) no matter where you live and some cities are with a lot of uneven terrain and yet bikes are there as well... I am born and raised in a 50'000 village/town and biking there is just as normal as in Copenhagen (where I live now). In Copenhagen the traffic is more dense so they/we need to be aware of such, where as the rest of Denmark might just settle for less when the density is less (or learn from Copenhagen when needed)... i was 7 when i started biking to the public inside pool 6 kilometers away (roughly 4 miles) with other kids my age and with no parents... It was simply not needed to have the supervision for the ride nor at the pool seen from our parents points of view, it still isn't. As we are brought up with bikes, we all know how bicyclists behave and have an easier time with em when we travel by car, we do not get (that) annoyed with em as we would if we where American =)
      But to be happy only because we bike is not all it takes, it is just what other countries like to see... I remember 15 years ago a parent from Denmark got arrested in NY for leaving her baby outside a cafe, how ever, that is still norm here as we think the infants need all the fresh air they can get and if they sleep we do not need to sit right next to them... So happiness is also about how relaxed we are with many things where some other parts of the world would go mental...

    • @TheChiefEng
      @TheChiefEng 9 лет назад

      In Denmark, biking and walking have always been very normal ways of getting around. Walking 1-2 km to get from point A to point B has never been considered a big problem. Riding 10-15 km to work on a bike has also never been considered a huge problem. The climate is perfect for biking and walking in general.
      That kind of transport culture would not work very well in tropical countries though.

    Biking is a great idea in a area that is mostly flat with decent weather.
    However biking in a area that is mostly hilly with steep grads and not so great weather is a nightmare.

      I guess the whole program was from the beginning more focussed on explaining Copenhagen as a bike city than making a full covering program about Copenhagen in general.
      The primary focus of this program was the bikes, second was the architecture and finally the food.
      A realistic review of Copenhagen would probably have focussed much more on the history and development of the city as well as the little known fact that it is one of the places in Northern Europe with the largest amount of museums etc.

      Copenhagen has made it into an advertisement word. Sort of like our country keeps pretending like 'Hygge' is a unique Danish feeling, which is obviously bullshit. The word may be Danish, but the feeling isn't.
      Sure, there's a lot of infrastructure for bikes in Copenhagen, but I still consider most other places in Denmark safer. The other places simply don't need the same amount of infrastructure, cause there's less traffic or because there's more space to work with.
      In the Danish country side you may not instantly see the bike path at the side of the highways etc. but they're there. They're just usually a bit further back instead of being right up against the road like in the cities.
      'Copenhagen is the bike capital of the world.' is just better for advertising the city than 'Copenhagen is one of the bike capitals of the world.' I wouldn't read too much into it. It's just marketing.
      As a Dane the most unsafe I've ever felt riding a bike was in Copenhagen. I don't care how many blue stripes and shit they add. Much less traffic will always be safer and a more pleasant experience. ;)

      That wasn't meant to sound racist. The small northern Scandinavian countries got most of their colonization out of their systems with the Viking invasions centuries ago, (except for Denmark which had some small African colonies which it disassembled a 100 years ago). France, the UK, the Netherlands... on the other hand were bold colonizers until recently, and have had a lot of immigration from these colonies as a result. Finland is mostly Finnish for the same reasons that S. Korea is mostly Korean, not because of racist immigration policies, but because it's seldom come up. I have Danish friends however who believe their gov't is racist, and who would like to see more immigration and better support for existing immigrants, but there are certainly those who do not. But in my experience the Danes are very open minded and are generally disapproving of racist views, even if many would prefer it if Denmark stayed traditionally Danish.

      I agree with you. It is absolutely the case that Danes would be shunned and discriminated against in many parts of the world. Asian countries, Persian countries, Muslim Countries - it is the rare exception that a white person would be accepted into these cultures as anything other than a visitor, and as long as they intend to leave. And do not even think of marrying our daughters.
      I personally don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to keep a country like Denmark...Danish!
