    When the animus was actually dangerous and required highly focused and trained people to operate and the user had to be precisely acclimated to not get hurt by it rather than just hop on in without a care

    The later entries just don't have the same charm as AC 1. No endless lists of other things to do. An engaging parkour, gathering intel to best eliminate your target and a story steeped in history. The progression you achieve through mastery of your skills and body count feel earned, gaining gear and upgrading equipment really makes you feel like an assassin. Altaïr's journey throughout is just perfect.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  2 года назад +4

      They really don't, no. Assassin's Creed 1 is deeply unique, it's a blend of so many different things that somehow click together seemingly effortlessly. The swirl of dark sci-fi/cyberpunk, historical fiction, cultish factions, commentary on systems of control, and a player-character with a moveset that's "realistic" but has a subtly over-the-top feel in terms of how _impossibly_ cool he is, it's all just... how do you _make_ something like this? Moreover, how do you _replicate_ any of it for a sequel? You kind of can't, really.

    Sooo well said! I’ve had the luck of playing this game before all the others came out, and it truly was a unique experience.
    And Altair, man. What a character. Not just for the development he gets in this game, but also for what his complete story makes him become. He is to the Assassins as a whole what King Arthur is to his Round Table, and the overall ideal of knighthood. He even gets some of the main Arthurian characters, which would be Al Mualim/Merlin, Maria/Guinevere and Abbas/Mordred. And he’s got a life story that basically is the same as Arthur’s.
    I mean, Ezio’s awesome, but not THAT awesome. Altair is.

    I also miss the way old (first animus ) worked. The interface was damn cool. It looked hella ahead of it's time and it made sense. I like that it was basically a torture design in a way(bleeding effect). And the fact that ENGINE was kinda dumb meant no fancy cutscene so that made it skip ahead and allowed you as a player to fill in the events. Which I loved doing and to this day I think no game nurtured my imagination like ac1.

    This game still blows my mind, I've played in 2007-8 with 8-9 years old, with a PC that didn't ran it so well.
    I've replayed later with better PC and it was good, but i was more into 2 and the others, I've played a lot of this games.
    Waiting every release and doing almost every content, until Unity, which i couldn't play because of my PC (and still want to, after seeing your videos even more, i want to say goodbye to the saga with that game).
    Later i realized the saga was so easy, especially with the kill streak mechanic, and didn't enjoy it as much for some years.
    But now with 21 years and playing a lot of games, i understood that it's about the experience and putting yourself in the paper of this characters, not the difficulty.
    I'm going through this one, and really enjoying it without HUD, completely immersed.
    I think it's the best one, not by nostalgia, but the atmosphere, so dark and believable (The cities are incredible).

      Yes, I love Origins a lot, although it's certainly very different. Basically, I hold a fairly nuanced perspective on AC Origins. I love the game for what it is, while simultaneously lamenting everything it's not. I miss advanced movement. I miss social stealth. I have learned to miss Hidden Blade kills being non-guaranteed or stat-dependent. Those kind of things, I have wished to be changed. Happily, Valhalla will be doing some of that, so Ubisoft learned their lesson too. That said, Egypt is amazing, general gameplay is amazing, and Bayek is my favorite character since Altair.

    The atmosphere of the game and overall message and themes were very interesting and unique compared to modern asscreed games, but that (in my opinion) will never justify every target investigation being the same "go sit on a bench and listen, go track an NPC" routine. I liked AC1, but repetitive missions was it's biggest flaw.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  3 года назад +4

      Indeed. I had a sick idea once for varying Investigations in waves. The first three memory blocks would have a few kinds, the next three would have different kinds and you wouldn't play any more of the first kind, and the last memory blocks would be their own thing entirely.
      Also fits because the Templars know the Assassin is investigating them in the ways that he is, so realistically they would be changing how they run information between themselves.

    Hey Leo, I know this comment is a bit late, but during Tamir’s assassination, SSJ Lang commented (in the live chat) that you could hide/blend as a merchant and he would interact with you. Do you know how to set it up? If so could you make a short little video or something of the sort? It just seems so cool and interesting.
    Edit: Also are there any other “set ups” for other assassinations? Like this “acting like a merchant” thing, if it actually works.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  4 года назад +2

      As far as I'm aware there is no actual interaction or special animation for it. I've never personally tried it myself but you can look up IanXO4's Assassin's Creed 1 videos, and he does this in at least one of them. Altair takes a merchant's place, either by moving him away, or killing him beforehand (this will drain some Sync because it's a Civilian Kill) and then just chilling out there. Since AC1 keeps you Stealthed as long as you're not doing anything conspicuous, Tamir ends up having all this default dialogue and all his default animations, but Altair is standing in front of him instead of the merchant. I think that's pretty much it. :P

    i remember in the original manual for PS3, they said something about how the animus has a controller shaped like that of a game console, for familiarity’s sake.
    i’m quite curious - is Desmond also seeing Altaïr in third person like us, or in first person? desmond’s gameplay perspective is explained by cameras (in the first game at least), but have we ever explicitly been told if the animus is as we see it, or if that’s strictly in gameplay, and it’s moreso his eyes seeing exactly what his ancestors’ eyes saw?

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  2 года назад +2

      Everything Desmond experiences is as if he's living Altair's memory, so to him it's all in first person, complete with touch, smell, taste, and so on. I believe there's at least one or two official sources for that floating around, but the rest has just been pieced together by the community given the lore we've received over the years. As for the controls, the Animus has no actual "physical" controller, it's all just a 'vibe' in the user's brain and thought-patterns and the Animus can read those brain-waves. It seems easier to interface with the machine if a Subject has 'buttons' to call back to and associate certain actions with, but I imagine if someone gets really good or over-Syncs, they'd just be able to control their ancestor and 'swim' through their memory-stream without such aids.

    • @samaiello7543
      @samaiello7543 2 года назад

      thank you for the speedy response! that controller thing has been in the back of my mind forever - confused me when i was younger, since there’s no controller in-game, but i distinctly remember it mentioned in the manual, I wonder why it was in there in the first place. Animus 2.0 and onwards I had already figured it was “interfacing” with the brain since it explicitly shows Rebecca sticking Desmond in his arm and such, but I just wasn’t sure about the one in the first game.
      I think the only reason I was uncertain about what Desmond experiences in the animus was BECAUSE of thinking he was using a controller - I had figured Ubisoft was going for a “full-sync” between the player and Desmond, where when he’s in the animus, our hands are “his” and vice versa, and everything that we see on our screen is exactly what he is seeing down to the pixel. I must’ve been 11 or 12 when I “deduced” that, and haven’t given it a proper thought since. If the game wasn’t such a meta masterpiece already, I wouldn’t have given any of this a second thought.
      Once again, I really appreciate the clarification - now I can’t stop picturing Desmond getting violently ill from medieval stenches
      This has always been my favorite game of the series, and I’ve learned so much more about it thanks to your videos - this balance of informative and entertaining commentary hits a perfect sweet spot for me, and I keep finding myself back here because of it. Hope your week treats you well, and thank you for all of this wonderful content!

    Assassins creed 1 is honestly super underrated. Admittedly is hasn’t aged all that well, but I still think the story and writing are very enjoyable to sit through. Still a very good game in its own right, and a definite recommendation, if anything else, I think it should definitely be played so you can have more context of altaïr as a character before going into revelations since he plays a major role in the overall narrative
    Edit: I do think the game has not aged the best, but I do not think it is nearly as bad as people say it is. The gameplay functions well for the most part with a couple of hiccups here and there, but that’s about it, nothing offensively bad about it aside from maybe having to lock onto targets to kill them with the hidden blade

    • @LeoKRogue

      It's probably aged a bit better than AC2 visually and in terms of writing quality. Gameplay is something you get very used to as well, I've been watching Memento_Gallery play it for what's essentially the first time and he's adapting super well. It just depends on how much the player in question cares to give it an honest try.

      @@LeoKRogue agreed. Like I said, I don’t think it’s aged nearly as poorly as people say it has. If I’m going to be honest, of the first 5 games in the series, I think AC2 has aged the most out of all of them, in terms of visuals and some of the writing decisions(as much as I still love AC2, the battle of forli and the bonfire of the vanities DLC are probably the worst parts of the game and are pretty bad from a story and mission design standpoint. Story mainly because it completely kills the pacing and momentum of the narrative and feels like pointless filler. I don’t really mind filler, but when your game is already very long, adding more to it feels exhausting to do. I would’ve honestly had little problem with the DLC if they just did what they did with the da Vinci disappearance for brotherhood where they’re optional memories to come back to. AC2’s narrative really suffers from them being mandatory memories, and should’ve been optional unlocks after sequence 11 where we either choose to complete the story first and then do them later, or stay behind and do them first before finishing the story if you really want to

    Although I do technically already know the answer to this question, I'm curious to hear your thoughts because you're Leo K and every time you say/write something I agree with It makes me feel good to know that I'm not alone on certain topics about this messy franchise that we all love and despise called Assassin's Creed.

      I'm pretty ill right now so my brain doesn't work the way I want it to, but basically Assassin's Creed 1 is completely itself to the point that it doesn't care if it alienates a mass audience. It was just barely successful enough to get a sequel but to this day most people consider it the "worst" game in the series with few redeeming qualities.
      That's not because it's actually "bad," despite one or two genuine shortcomings I would quietly polish up in a Remake, it's because it is _so committed_ to being what it is that it fully accepts a lot of people are going to hate it. The thing is, I LOVE what Assassin's Creed 1 is, so I never NEEDED it to change for me. Instead, I just wanted MORE of that because there was nothing else like it. There still isn't.
      Sadly, that's not the series we received in the end.

    I’m so baffled as to why Ubisoft hasn’t remade this gem of a game. Yeah it does get a bit repetitive and collecting flags is a bit weird but this game is the reason they have a multi million dollar IP. I wish they would completely remake this and improve upon things using their past games.
    Rebuild the parkour and use this as a baseline, use the combat from something like Origins, bigger and more accurate maps, Unity styled black box missions, a retelling of the modern day at I would argue it’s peak, improvements on social stealth from the Ezio Trilogy, no OP eagle for scouting and instead a more refined eagle vision and in turn making you rely on the info you gather before hand to help you plan your preferred routes and instead of constantly using the same three methods to gain info perhaps they could add one or two more ways or maybe make the three methods evolve throughout the sequences or even have them about in a black box mission as ways of gaining intel as you try to plan your kill your way.
    This game started it all and has the best writing regarding combating philosophies of the Assassins and Templars as well as great world building for modern day with your interactions with Warren, Lucy and the emails.
    That would get them a lot of money from OG fans as well as possibly bring in new fans as it’s a new way to get started with the franchise since most of everything else is playable on last gen and current gen. They could even remake the DS game and Bloodlines as DLC if they want to support the game post launch.
    I feel like this game deserves more respect from people who just write it off as “the first game that’s repetitive” because it’s so much more and I’m tired of it getting treated like an ugly duckling by Ubisoft.
    Remake this game instead of ACIV, AC1 needs it more and deserves it just as much.
    Thanks for listening to my little rant if anyone reads this three years too late comment on this appreciation fest of AC1.

    • @LeoKRogue

      Especially true when you consider this is the one classic game in the series that's not readily available on modern consoles, with Xbox being the only exception and solely due to backward-compatibility. AC1, not even as a remake, but the game by itself, is not playable on PS4, PS5 or Switch, all of which have a huge userbase. It's genuinely just baffling.
      Alas, as it is the closest thing we're getting to that is Mirage, which is not that close at all, really. ^_^ Just atmosphere and "vibes" at best. Still counts for something, but definitely not the remake or rerelease players would like to have. One thing I also always mention when this topic comes up, is that I'm not sure how much I trust modern Ubisoft to recreate a classic Assassin's Creed game. There's a huge chance they miss the mark or don't understand what makes AC1 special, and thus fail to include certain things people really cherish.

    • @reevestorrs3947
      @reevestorrs3947 Год назад

      @@LeoKRogue, I agree that modern Ubisoft don’t quite understand what made AC so special but I would like to think that if Mirage does well enough and the developers for it truly are fans of classic AC that perhaps there’s hope that we could get a remaster like AC3 got at least.
      Perhaps there genuinely is love for the OG in the series from these guys but honestly I’m trying not to get excited for Mirage.
      It’s also surprising that it’s not been re released as a low effort remaster just like Rogue got because it would be quite easy for them to do and I don’t see them losing money on doing it.
      I can only hope that Altair will get his day in the spotlight again in the future before they make AC unrecognisable to anyone, Odyssey was too far but I think they’ll at one point take it further in the future because of their money hungry ways.
      I appreciate the love and respect you give to AC, especially the first, as this is one that changed the landscape of gaming so to speak in terms of storytelling, world building and gameplay for us that enjoy a stealthier approach to games. I’ve enjoyed watching your content this past year or two and I hope to see you upload some VODs of you streaming Mirage if you do end up playing it.

    It will be done is a common phrase in Islam by Prophets being given commands by Allah. So when Altair says it will be done what he's really saying is "your will be done" in a pseudo-religious adherence to Al Mualim. It's fucking creepy when you actually know this shit and it's just *so fucking good* writing that they never feel the need to like insult your intelligence to explain.

    Quick question, it sounds stupid but in ac unity Bellec says that before Altair the Levantine assassins killed in broad daylight and sacrificed themselves in the process. Does that mean Altair introduced social stealth to the assassins? And did he make one of the 3 commandments that is to hide in plain sight?

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  3 года назад +2

      No. The Assassin's Creed and its Tenets were developed before Altair's time, as was Social Stealth. Some early Lore files found in Abandoned Hidden Ones Bureaus throughout England in AC Valhalla hint at this already, so the full game will tell us even more.
      However, Al Mualim took the Assassin Brotherhood in a more zealous, fanatical direction, since to him, any Assassins under him were merely tools. As such, he didn't necessarily care whether they lived or died, as long as they finished the jobs he gave them. "It matters not how we complete our task, only that it's done," Altair says to Malik in AC1's opening. This is in reference to that. Once Al Mualim was ousted, Altair was able to bring the Brotherhood back to a healthier way of operating, which valued all of its members, and humanity as a whole.

      I'm not sure, to be quite honest, since I've never actually experienced this myself, so I wouldn't even know exactly what to change to get rid of it. I do play AC1 capped at 60fps, so if your framerate is *much* higher, that could be a cause of it. I really wish I could offer more.

    Also someone in the stream chat said a game w hijab wearing women is unique. This is cuz the assassins were a real religious group within Islam that would kill their targets in broad daylight.
