Holden Barina/Chevy Sonic Turbo Replacement

- This 2015 Holden Barina RS was showing a P0229 trouble code for an underboost condition. Turbo problems are pretty common on these 1.4 turbo engines, and I was asked to swap it out. I didn't make the diagnosis; I just did the parts swap. I don't work on GM cars often, and this vehicle was a good reminder of why.
This engine is used in the Chevy Sonic as well as other GM vehicles around the flat globe.

After just changing one of these I will never do it again nice vid
I was wondering where you were lately , nice to see your still alive mate 👍 That's a winter project for me and you do it in a weekend . Top notch buddy.
Hey buddy! It's been a bit busy round here but hopefully I'll be on a screen near you a bit more. This job took a few weeks of ignoring it before I got it all finished.
Hi, informative video but where’s the Morris Minor restoration ?
Regards.
Thanks for putting this together, mate! My son's girlfriend needs her turbo replaced in her Sonic LTZ. Did you have to drain the oil AND coolant? I'm guessing so... Cheers!
It looked like quite a challenge and so I was glad to see the job got a thumbs-up and a 'yeah!' from the quality-control department.
I did not enjoy this at all, but got it sorted in the end. The QC guy approved and enjoyed his test drive 😁
@@Badgertronix It looked very awkward and guaranteed to give you an aching back.
Thank you! Gonna be doing this myself this week
Good job!
I forget how many vehicles use this particular engine. Most are using a new 3 cylinder turbo.
Hope you are safe, heard about what happened in Adelaide.
Thanks! Yeah, seems like a common engine with a few issues. Cheers!
Those engines were always a bit turdy, had lots of issues with it in Astras here in UK. Good job though, it seemed to go well enough.
Young lad growing fast :)
There's not much positive to say about that engine and given the cars on its second engine already that's now falling to bits speaks volumes
I've been waiting for Morrie minor videos and now he's working on GM stuff... What's going on??? I might go look at some vice grip garage👍😉
Well I'll be dipped 🤣
Regarding the rain:
I don't curse the rain and I don't curse my hair. they could both go away...
"looks like an STD". made me laugh out loud!
We needed the rain, but it's no good for making videos! My hair is long gone 🤣
@@Badgertronix you missed a great opportunity: 29:10 let’s start her up. [Cut to atomic mushroom cloud…]
🤣🤣
Awesome video. about to do this. What are the torque specs on Manifold bolts? or if there is a link I can find information at, would be fantastic.
Any chance you could post a parts list? Cheers
You sped thru the part that was catching me the most then didn't even explain how you got the turbo off
How many miles were on it?
I did that job once. Everything starts off easy then turns into a pain in the butt lol
Haha so true! Started off simple then turned to custard
I was just working away here in the UK and thinking its a good while since you put up a video. Then "BAAM"... Within a minute this pops up.. Spooky or what?
David in the UK.
I've been trying to upload this since yesterday. It was waiting for you to think of me making a video for the RUclips fairy to sort out the technological issues. Great to hear from you as always
@@Badgertronix Glad to hear my
" telepathetic" thoughts woke up the Youbie-tubie fairies for you. It was defiantly weird though as i had checked your site just a few minutes earlier to make sure i hadn't missed anything. Then I returned to my workbench and got back to it while wondering how well you and your fleet were fairing, and in less than a minute i got the notification of your latest video.
영상 잘보았어요..! 👍👍👍
Thank you!
How did you know the turbo went out?
I didn't diagnose it. Just got asked to change it
I guess we won't see many of these as classics as they won't make it to old age... even a simple fan belt job will be a garage job for many people,
It seems like a bad idea from start to finish. This car sold the other day so some people seem to appreciate them 🤷♂️ cheers
와우!
Auto zone has lifetime warranty Dorman turbos for about $620. Best bet imo!
Apart from they're Dorman garbage and you'll be doing the job more than once!
400 more CC's and it wouldn't need a turbo.
You're not wrong. Ain't no replacement for displacement.
Both 1.8 & 1.4 turbo are 125 hp (93 kw).
Nice to see you're still alive Badger - I did wonder. 😂
I hope you rubbered up, if you were ever going to catch car cooties it would be from this GM shit pile. ☻
Back atcha, not seen you on the Instagram for a while 😁
It was a massive shit pile. Even my new, yet to be revealed project car is less rubbish 🤣
@@Badgertronix Oh I deleted Instagram from my phone - I have gone on a handful of times from my computer and that's it. Haven't had Facebook on there for years. Only reason I don't completely delete my account is because of a few people I keep in touch with. I'm so sick of all the bullshit going on the last 18 months and Zuckerberg is a lying, thieving sack of dog excrement.
Another project car Badger? You're a nutter!
Instagram is just for cars and boobs 🤣
Oh you'll love my Italian project car. I certainly do 😎😁
So you had to buy the whole assembly including manifold? wow. Disappointing ... lets stay away from those guys in future.
You sure do. Not uncommon these days, but far from ideal.
@@Badgertronix Indeed
He didn't show all the things to do. Not usefully
Lucky it wasn't a DIY video 🤷♂️
