    I’ve lived in Chesapeake long ago. Chesapeake didn’t become a city until 1963. We’ve lived around that area since 1976-1982. First, we moved into a large and expensive apartment in Churchland in Portsmouth. Some kids were mean. Some people were crazy and called police on them. In 1979, my folks purchased a first house in Western Branch. 1980 census was 80,000. It was much quieter. Except young neighbors with 2 kids across street some of them gossiped about them. Money. ( until late 80’s we have that learned the husband was killed probably mob or something and wife and son fled). I was away very often to boarding school but only at home brief weekend. Holiday. And all summer. Living in rural city and you was right it was boring and not many businesses around. I could not get to shop to Roses and Murphy Mart since neighborhood does not have a sidewalk. Roads was 2 lanes. Wait until ask my folks to take me there. What else? I remembered, my mother who worked in Portsmouth. She once told me that she rode car pool with ladies and some of them mentioned that they thought that my folks have a lot of money..... Our 1965 house red brick colonial with chimney in middle plus two new Oldsmobiles parked there. She wished to tell them mind their own business. Until August 1982, I returned to Texas. And next spring, my folks sold the house quickly and returned to Texas too. Now, that nearby 30 years old mall lot of stores have shut down. Lot in Portsmouth too. My last visit was 1991 and, I’ve learned that some Portsmouth residents have moved to Chesapeake due to crime. Sad.

      Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to share your vivid history! You paint a very clear picture and I can envision the Roses you're talking about. Portsmouth has definitely been influenced by the recent tolls, but as a lot of my friends grew up in Portsmouth I will always have an affinity and appreciation for the city. I also have hopes that as the area/industry grows to the west Portsmouth will have a boost in its economy as people look to move nearby as people on the western side of the area don't have the hassle of paying those tolls going back and forth to Portsmouth. Thanks again for your insights and history that only you could tell! Greatly appreciate it.

    • @rbsmith3365
      @rbsmith3365 5 лет назад +1

      About tolls.... Midtown Tunnel cost before, I left in 1982 was 25 cents each. 1979 Chesapeake Bay bridge/tunnel was $12

    Parents built a home for $40,000 on Hemlock Drive in Silverwood in 1970. We moved there in December 1970 and moved to Asheville, NC in March 1972. Prior to that, we lived on Quince Road in the Churchland area from March 1967 to December 1970. I went to Western Branch Elementary for first and most of second grade. I remember the Churchland shopping center with the Colonial grocery store and a new Grant's. No malls in Chesapeake or Portsmouth so we went to Military Circle and Pembroke Malls. There was also a Sears on High Street in Portsmouth. I have fond memories of my childhood there. We moved to Virginia Beach in 1981 and left in 1983. I did not travel back to Hampton Roads until 2016 (now live in Mississippi) and walked around Silverwood and the Quince Road area. Silverwood is still quite nice. Western Branch still quite nice.

    I live in Norfolk, but the company I work for is doing a project in great bridge. Imo, it is one of the best kept secrets in the region. It feels like its own town, and there are a lot of locally owned businesses along battlefield bullivard. Its very walkable, and scenic, despite not being urban.
