On a beautiful Spring night in 1969, I saw them perform live for the first time at Meriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland. They opened for The Who and were a new band on the scene. They were so good that we kept them onstage until The Who's manager pulled the plug on them so The Who could get some time onstage. Consequently, it was the only time they shared a stage with The Who. They were completely different from any band we had ever heard and I was hooked for life!

Led Zeppelin is my favorite band. This kind of explains why I like them so much. They are all 4 fantastic musicians. Throw in their stage presence and energy, it equals almost unparalleled success in their day. Big venues for the time. Playing solo with no opening band. Long concerts. The improv solos. Zeppelin literally formed out of a hit 1960s group called The Yardbirds. Jimmy Page had to virtually pull a group together to fulfill Scandinavian gigs and, in essence, this is their tribute to that period. The Viking mythology is not alien to Britain. Indeed, to this day, part of the modern English language is descended from their semi-domination of England many hundreds of years ago. And that is partly conveyed in the proto-metal urgency of this number.
