      We've been in agreement about this for a long while, no? They list odds on the pack. You're gambling. You hedge your bets buying hobbies or jumbos. You hedge your bet buying bulk. But at the end of the day, bet away.

    • @markymichaels

      It’s always been gambling. But, atleast ya have some value even if ya “lose” rather than nothing if ya scratch a ticket or gamble on a sports game. Even base cards are “worth something”

    I owned a card shop up until a few months back(closed for family reasons) the issue is most people that came in to buy boxes to rip were just gambling,didn't PC anything and didn't want to sell on eBay, or card shows,Facebook etc. but they would want to sell me the cards back and expected the prices they seen on eBay,most would just end up piling up the cards at home until it was overwhelming and their wife is yelling at them. I told a few guys that were doing this, if you're just in it for the gambling aspect just buy scratchers, then if you win something it's a lot easier to cash out without all the extra cards lying around.

    think you are over valuing the cards and not taking into consideration shipping fee's and finding buyers for those cards plus your time to sell and list. say that i do think they are better then scratch offs because they are collectable opening to make money should not be the goal but i thing your total on how much the cards are worth together is a bit disingenuous just my thoughts. think this was a great vdeo just played up the oh baseball cards can make you money if you open them too much as a way to make money dont think you should ever look at cards that way when breaking

  • @thenationofpeacock3309
    @thenationofpeacock3309 9 месяцев назад +6

    I think the main issue with me is what you noted about the effort to getting the value back out. With scratchers it's cut and dry. Even with your card values you have to take into account the ebay/sales fees, the cost associated with the time to list/cost to ship/etc, and the taxes at the end of the year depending on how much you sale. All of that eats into the perceived "value" at the end of the day.

    I think this is a fascinating question. I don’t do any type of lottery but based off this video it was a lost on the lottery but it is guaranteed money even at a lost. We all love baseball cards and want to justify its financial side of it but we all know it’s a loss type hobby unless we really know what we’re doing. But with this video those baseball cards predictions besides the buybacks aren’t guaranteed at all. Those lots and single smaller cards aren’t a guarantee. I pulled a Ken Griffey The Kid card in update two months back. I’ve had it in my eBay store for 51 raw all this time. I just sold it at a 25 percent off deal. You just never know.

    Interesting video, thanks for doing this! One thing I've discovered this year after opening more full cases is there is a lot of value just bundling up base cards (both complete sets and random bulk). There are a lot of set collectors that scour eBay looking for cheaper ways to complete sets. I was stunned with how much my Bob Ross bulk went for.

    This was great but I don’t think the average person can recoup the money from selling cards like you can. A lot of folks don’t know how to grade. Aren’t there eBay seller fees too? My guess is the average person couldn’t get half of your estimate for cards, so unless they are doing it for PC there is no reason to gamble on cards. Or lotto for that matter. At least Vegas odds will give you 49% for black jack

I'm a super collector & I scratch lotto tickets but I need to just buy more sports cards because it would usually win in the end.......make one more video with one or two books of $30 or $50 tickets versus $1k worth of hobby or a sealed case of chrome blasters ......the cards most likely will still win but those $50 books can produce some big winners......

      I've ripped bout nearly 15 chrome megas, probably 5-10 blasters with 1 hobby box and maybe 8 individual jumbo packs and after all this time still 1 card off of a full set lol.
      So does 1 full jumbo box really get you a set or is Topps/fanatics holding or specifically collating certain cards in certain formats lol??

      @@robhanson2653I have wondered the same myself. Do they only put a couple of the cards into correlation in just hobby and then a couple more in just retail. What made me wonder is I decided to go ahead and do Bowman Platinum, well I have two complete sets minus one card. #1 JD Martinez. It's crazy how I never got him when the box correlation was always the exact same. It seems impossible because of that. Good point though

    On lotto tickets, if you get tired of scratching, you can just scratch off the code and scan it in the lottery app (I'm in Ohio, I assume Michigan has an app also) and it tells you if its a winner and how much. You can also redeem them for points if it's a loser. Thanks for the video though, I always joke with the wife and kids that buying boxes of cards are like playing the lottery, haha.

      That is the primary point right there, I collect cards because I love baseball, I'm proud of the PC I have built the past couple years and would never sell a good many in it. If you are in it to be a merchant only then I do feel sorry for those that choose that. Baseball is so far above the other major team sports when comes to the romanticism of the game. The experiences and feelings that you have at the ballpark can not be rivaled on a football field or basketball court. Baseball is personal, our heroes look like us, act like us and the real ones still play the game and appreciate it like we did. Sorry to ramble but I get juiced when I read somebody has an experience at the ballpark.

    I liken opening packs to sports betting because I have a topical interest in baseball. Opening packs is gambling and I treat it as such. I consider any money spent on gambling as money spent for entertainment purposes only. The only thing I gained, even if I "win", was entertainment because in the long run you always will lose money. Gambling companies wouldn't be in business if that were not the case. The argument "well at least with ripping packs you can add to your collection" is a red herring because you can buy singles for your collection for much less money. - WW

    Ive been thinking of doing this exact video for about a year now and it's awesome to see you do it. So I believe in this scenario the scratchers win. When you take into account time and effort, the scratchers were a no brainier win. But that said, you did Chrome 23 blasters. IMO the worst baseball product for the price even with buy backs as the odds are so terrible in those. I'm shocked you didn't even get 1 auto. Had you done 2 hobby boxes, I feel like the cards may be the better option.
    If you do this again, I'd do a $500 challenge. $500 in random scratchers and $500 in a curated mixer of cards.
    Fun video for sure. Hope the Shohei grades out for you. That was a sweet pull.
    Also, Walker seems to be hotter than Corbin in actual sales prices that I've seen. Why? No idea, but Walker has sold well for me compared to Corbin. More views, more sales and equal value. I assume it's a Cardinals bump.

The down side of the cards are the hours and hours the average person will have to spend to recoup the additional "value" of anything other than the major pulls. I've done many scratch ticket books and you're guaranteed 50% value back. Usually you get 50-70% back. With card boxes you usually get less than half value back unless you hit a monster like that $100 card you got. You can estimate the "value" of cards but someone has to be willing to pay that for them wheras scratch tickets are easy cash.

The entertainment value is huge because I think both you take an L on and if you aren't having fun then your just burning money. Just a thought.....Cards are similar to stock, each rises and fall according to a player market "value", so much so, you don't have use actual currency to purchase them. Topps buyback, trade partners, credit cards etc. Meaning you truly don't have to ever really use " cash" to obtain the product. Lottery tickets, at least in Georgia... CASH. A secured currency. Basically that $2.00 ticket is a two dollar ticket. I won't be able to resale that scratched off lottery card for anything, to anyone. Trading cards all the way!!!!!!

      That's an incredibly variable analysis. Even if ROI in any single product were consistent, researching every card would take hours of time. You're welcome to watch the videos of hobby box breaks, search the price comps of every single card, put them in a spreadsheet, add them up, average them out across a 10-box sample size (30 boxes total ~5000 cards), and report your findings back to us. Great idea though 😀👍

    Lottery tickets aren’t worth the price of the paper on which they are printed. Some might say baseball cards are the same. But the purpose of the two is far more different. Few, if any, people collect used scratch-off tickets. So the enjoyment factor is pretty much zero with scratch-off tickets.

    I hate cards right now. Still buying chrome 2023, I’ve opened everything BUT Salas 1st.
    I’m near the point where I’ll put a base Salas 1st might get me to accidentally push someone out a window!
    And you are asking the wrong question. I would know, I ran a hedge fund.
    Cards will always be a… let’s call it… “Macro-High Cards”. When the economy is doing well, people have the ABILITY to buy extra things like cards. Cards will always hold interest as long as people have money.
    But people like me believe we are sitting on a massive economic bubble where the 17 and growing trillion debt we have given out, which is keeping the stock market up, has to eventually implode in itself.
    But Lottery tickets are not an economic entity. People buy them regardless of anything macro or micro because scratch off cards are one of the most addictive things sold. And they are made originally by the same company that made stuff for casinos, which, bc my grandparents owned one of the largest companies in the country and part of that company was for casinos, but casinos making their stuff was a study by the CIA, blah blah torture, blah blah.
    But other than alcohol, it’s considered that scratch off’s are more addictive than cigarettes when it comes to legal things the government allows to be sold where people generally go.
    And you know people like breaks? Well each scratch off is essentially a break, and I have seen people go into deep break debt on Whatnot.
    Problem with cards though is the 3rd party. See that cash card? Do you need to get it graded? And does the grade dictate the value? And does a human grade the cards to artificially increase the price?
    Yes. I have often told PSA “Do your graders come from Harvard Grading School?”.
    So while both things have become pseudo slot machines, the appeal of scratch offs are more appealing to a wider audience.
    Baseballs average fan is 55 years old. So they aren’t as into the breaks due to age and being scared of the internet.
    So maybe try another sport? I mean gaining people will be hard. You are in a niche, and while I’ve heard bad things about the guy, you aren’t Jabs, who is the biggest baseball guy.
    So I think you need to live in your niche where you have fans that pay out, but the opportunity for growth is minimal.
    There is also “weekly discussion of baseball”. You can do Bowman prospect updates or baseball conversation?
    And you can I guess open your own boxes of cards as you talk so you appeal to people like me with ADD with 2 things to pay attention to.

    • @ajjameson154
      @ajjameson154 9 месяцев назад

      I watch both Jabs and Stryker. Jabs may be 3x the size atm, but it took him 7 years. I think Stryker could def catch up. Plus Jabs drives me nuts with the 'no' sleeve/protection on camera. Stryker def treats the cards better AND breaks occasionally for his PC. Something Jabs has gotten too big or money oriented to do.

    • @joshbkaufman
      @joshbkaufman 9 месяцев назад

      @@ajjameson154 look, idk, I’m not even a big card guy. But I am an economics guy. And I do know that jabs does have that “household” name as it’s the generic breaker that comes up for baseball.
      The issue is that Stryker only streams on 1 platform, and RUclips, unlike twitch, will have more general fans due to people just wanting to see the new set and have no attachment to the streamer.
      Maybe he should multi-stream the shoes on multiple platforms at once… but that can be difficult and I don’t know if he will end up throwing his computer out the window.
      At the same time, I would just write code that interlocked the websites for the stream, but I haven’t seen RUclips’s code in a long time.

      @@shakascloset1700 I didn’t know if he simulcasted. He doesn’t mention a twitch site. I don’t watch breaks though, so idk.
      Apparently I’m the only message here though that he didn’t give a heart to.
      Like are you serious? Wow, I feel so hated.
      But yeah, problem is that there is a minimal amount you can show with cards. In the end it’s men on cardboard.
      That’s why my last suggestion was maybe a show that talks about prospects or a show that talks about rookies or a show that discusses the Kardashians?

    I thoroughly enjoyed this video. The concept of value/gambling laid out in front of us. The value with cards includes work, so many will opt for lottery tickets despite the odds are really designed against you. On the flip side, cards fluctuate in value quickly. And a $50 card today could triple in a few months. I prefer cards, but will buy a powerball once in a while.

    The down the road value has worked out for me as well. Went back through my old card boxes and pulled out some Brady rookies that back then I thought were just commons. Then the players that make into the HOF. You pull those second and third year cards out and there’s some nice value there. Sure the ceiling is higher on a lottery ticket, however the odds are much much worse than hitting a ceiling card for baseball. Nice comparison. Enjoyment level is much higher opening baseball cards. Thanks for sharing!
