    Great idea shooting the warm ups, I have in the past but I'm going to do more. I recently picked up a 400 f/2.8 which I really love, I found the 300 f/2.8 a little short. I agree with gear and buying used, but I find my weakness is not knowing more about the game. I shoot Nikon also, hard to beat the D5; it is a real workhorse. Spot on about fast glass!

    • @JackBeasleyMedia
      @JackBeasleyMedia  3 года назад

      Yep, the 300 is a little short for football. That 400 is the sweet spot. I'm seriously considering selling my 200-500/5.6 for a 200-400/f4 to pick up another stop of light for night shooting. With the D5, I should be able to shoot at reasonable ISOs (16000) and get useable pics. Thanks for the comment!

    Another great video sir. Question: for those initial warm-up/game time shots, can you pass along where your shutter speed/ISO was? I was assuming/guessing nothing slower than 1250s and ISO 2500 or below, as they looked super sharp. I know that field seemed to be pretty well lit, so the ISO could have been much lower. Thanks!

    SUBSCRIBED AND WATCHING YOUR GREAT STUFF!!! Awesome video and perfect timing for me personally. Thanks for sharing!!! I'm old school like you, Nikon only :-) newspaper sports photo guy and camera sales guy from the 80's & 90's in the NY/NJ/PA area. but I moved on to another career path before digital truly became a replacement for shooting. I do really miss the good old camera shows and darkroom work. Fast forward 20 years and now I'm shooting my son's High School Football games and my HS daughters Lacrosse games for fun. I broke down and got my first interchangeable lens digital camera for this use. Someone that knows my background let the cat out of the bag that I was a sports photographer at some point in my past and volunteered me as a team photographer. I knew I shouldn't have taken my camera and big lens into the stands last season LOL. My question, is about my camera and possible upgrade if needed for fun shooting, not as a job. I knew to spend more money on good lenses, 80-200 f2.8, 200-500 f5.6, & 18-200, but I'm pretty clueless on digital camera hardware. I'm using the crop sensor Nikon d5600. It's not exactly the pro level camera you are using. Will the d5600 work decent for low light night games (using the 200-500 and 70-200) or should I consider bumping up (actually trading up ;-) to a better used full frame Nikon? With some equipment trades I should be able to budget (get approval from the wife ;-) up to $1500 if a full size sensor will be a big enough advantage for the low variable light conditions at the games. I was looking at the full frame D750, D810, Or maybe a D3/D4 but the varying pixel sizes & sensor size combos confuse me a little. Maybe even a DX crop sensor camera like the d500 might be a good choice. Sorry for the long comment and hope you don't mind giving some advice to an old school Nikon FM2/F3HP/F4s film guy :-)

    • @tikicowboy
      @tikicowboy 2 года назад

      I'm leaning towards the D750 after some research online, but your thoughts would be much appreciated, at your convenience :-) Thinking it will make a good second camera long term if the shooting bug hits me as I expect and I get a second higher end camera ;-)

    • @JackBeasleyMedia
      @JackBeasleyMedia  2 года назад +1

      Hi Herb, here are my suggestions. High school football fields are very dark. You really have to shoot with a lens capable of f2.8. Anything greater than that will pose problems with very high ISOs. I don't even bother with my 200-500/5.6 at night. If all you've got is the 80-200/2.8, I'd walk down to the sidelines and wait for the action to get closer to you. Full-frame cameras generally perform better under these conditions as there is more sensor and pixels to capture the subject. The D500 is the "flagship" DX camera, but with the smaller sensor, I know guys who struggled with high ISO images coming out of it. I used to own a D750 and I comfortably took it to about ISO 10,000. As for the D3 or D4, I'd skip the D3 and go to a D4s. The D3 is older tech and I know guys who struggle with it in low light. Plus, Nikon doesn't fix it anymore. If I had to choose between a D750 and a D4s, I'd get the 4s. Hope this helps!

    Hey Jack, I love your videos. I am looking to get back into sports photography particularly taking football photos. I currently have a Nikon D750 along with a Sigma 70-200 sports f/2.8 lens. I understand that in most cases, the range may not be enough unless I am shooting from the endzone for high school football. I also shoot youth football as well. I would like to know if I could get by using a 60-600 f/4.5-6.3 if I'm shooting mid-morning to afternoon games?

    I just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos and have seen many of them over the years. I started shooting high school football 12 years ago, but then also branched out to ice hockey, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, field hockey and rugby. Seems that word gets around with the different boosters. I picked up an old Sigma 120-300 2.8 sport lens this summer and I'll be using that as my main camera with a Nikon D600 this fall. For the tight stuff like the end zone, I wanted to get a 24-70 2.8 but money was tight so I'm going to use a Nikon 17-55 2.8 for that on a D500. Do you think those two combos will suffice? Thanks again for the great info.

    • @JackBeasleyMedia
      @JackBeasleyMedia  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching! On the extenders, I understand the desire to save money this way, but they tend to decrease the sharpness of your photos - especially on zooms, and especially when using the longer, 2x extenders. I have a 1.4x but I only use it on my longer prime lenses.

    • @socratesvela8285
      @socratesvela8285 2 года назад

      I have a 1.4 and just tried to understand where is its place. I also have a crop body, but in they end, Ive come to accept that teleconverters are just not recommended for low light situations, like a 2nd half HS football game. I have a High res full frame, so I need all the light i can get, so shooting at 2.8 is not negotiable. I would say if you can use the teleconverter at an iso of less than 1600 at F4, it should be ok, no way you can shoot an evening game at those settings though, but maybe the first half of the game.

    • @JackBeasleyMedia

      It depends on the situation. If I've got consistent lighting, I'll turn off auto WB, set my camera on "direct sunlight" (just so they all record the same), and take a photo of the WB card. Then, correct all the images in Lightroom using that card's values. If I've got fluctuating WB (which happens on some fields), I'll set it on auto WB and fix any problems later in LR. Here's my video on correcting WB - ruclips.net/video/NvcrylaOZs8/видео.html
      Also, it's important to turn on "anti-flicker".

    Sports photography is probably not the *most* expensive genre of photography -- it runs a very close second to be sure, but it's definitely behind the wildlife photographers. :p They'll spend hundreds or even thousands or more just *getting* to their locations, never mind the gear they bring - and that gear is just as big and expensive as the sports shooters. (600 f/4 and 400 f/2.8 being the norm -- plus *big* tripods and gimbal mounts) Edit: The " *and sales* " portion of your video seems to be missing...

    Will 200-400 f4 work for hs football? or is 300 2.8 better?

      @JackBeasleyMedia  2 года назад

      I seriously considered a 200-400/4, but the extra f-stop to f2.8 comes in handy. As much as it’s nice having an extra 100mm, I’d probably go for the 300 with a 1.4x converter. That way you can get a little more reach if the lights aren’t too bad or during the day.

      @@JackBeasleyMedia how about a 2x converter for the 300 2.8? im tryin to figure out if i should go with 300 or if its worth twice money for 400 2.8, mainly for hs football games

      Well, you could use that during the day.

      Well, I used my 300/2.8 as a stepping stone to get to my 400. I used it for two years before I put together the funds to get a used 400/2.8

    The D500 will stomp the piss out of the D750, 780 and the D850 when it comes to action!

      For daylight, I'd agree. For low light, I've heard from enough pros that their D500 produces too much noise and reduces their options for cropping in lowlight situations.

    i have a nikon d750 with a 70-300mm lens, will this be enough?

      The D750 is fine to get started. However, I’m guessing that 70-300 has an f-stop with a minimum of f4 or 5.6 at 300. You’re going to struggle with super high ISOs and some of these dark fields. Daytime, you’re fine.

      Well, this was my very first video, so I was still learning how to do this RUclips video thing! Hopefully, my tools and techniques have improved from this first video.
