    Nice looking drums… nice throws, good wire choice, very classic look. Really enjoyed the mahogany and the walnut. Walnut is one of my favorite drum woods, it retains that low, dark flavor throughout the tuning range (much like it’s metal counterpart - copper). Where some woods don’t have much character, walnut has plenty. Nice to see Ludwig offering so many great wood choices on an affordable drum.

    Thanks Cody and Ben, I've been wandering about these snares, I'd probably be tempted by the cherry if I had to choose one over the other. They certainly look great, tube lugs being my favourite, and 14" x 6.5" a good size. I look forward to your next instalment on these Ludwig Universal snares, as well as any other drum related matters. Great job, guys!

    I've always felt that a 6"- 6.5" deep snare is the perfect middle of the road. 4.5"-5" in the shallow end, and 8" on the deep end. Of course materials make a big difference in that equation too.

    What is the snare on the lower shelf in the background just above the bass drum? It looks like brass or bronze and has a stunning finish.

      We didn't change the heads or wires because we wanted to demo these the way they would perform if you bought them today! After having gone through a bunch of tunings with these, we found the stock heads and wires to be more than adequate to demonstrate how excellent these drums are.

  • @BeesWaxMinder

    I’ve never really been convinced that the material a Shell is made of has much if any effect, and certainly most Drums can sound much like any other drum of a Similar size and depth once they’re tuned the same.
    Surely the heads are the main contributing factor to the tone of a drum?
    That being said these are nice Drums & fine value.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  Год назад +1

      As you'll see/hear in the upcoming comparison, shell material significantly impacts the timbre of the instrument. If you compared these to a Supraphonic or Black Beauty, you'd have some vastly different sonic characteristics. Drumheads are hugely important as well, since they are the primary resonating element.

    • @BeesWaxMinder
      @BeesWaxMinder Год назад +3

      @@SoundsLikeADrum certainly if you’re going to do a comparison with all things being equal except the shells, then that would be a wonderful thing.
      I’d really like to see that.
      I just find, myself, that, when Drums are tuned the same, that shells make very little difference, but I’d love to be proved wrong. (that’s the way I learn!)
      If you’re into doing comparison videos, then it will be interesting to compare drums that are as similar as possible except for, say, a different depth or, say, a different width BUT still tuned the same -that would answer a lot of questions and open a lot of eyes/ears, I reckon😉

      @@BeesWaxMinder "I just find, myself, that, when Drums are tuned the same, that shells make very little difference, but I’d love to be proved wrong. (that’s the way I learn!)"
      I don't think you're necessarily wrong. As long as you are being honest as to what you hear, that's all anyone can ask. However, I would recommend that you not make a final judgement based on a limited number of samples. For example, lets say you are looking for a a 6.5 x 14 snare drum in maple. Even though the shells are all maple, the design differences can be substantial. If you took a bunch of them and tuned each exactly the same way, with the same heads, they're all going to sound different. It depends on the drum. A lot of them may sound fairly similar, but not all. So, what I'm trying to say is, you may not always get the same results. You just may not have heard that one maple snare (or whatever), that does let the type of wood shine through more than the others. Its just something to think about.

    • @BeesWaxMinder
      @BeesWaxMinder Год назад

      @@AT-wl9yq with respect my experience of Drumz (especially snare drums) is hardly a "limited sample" but as I say when someone does manage to prove that there are significant differences in shell material I'll be more than happy to learn my lesson!😉👍

    • @AT-wl9yq
      @AT-wl9yq Год назад

      @@BeesWaxMinder Did you even read my post? All I said was different snares made out of the same wood can, and do sound different. Its possible that a snare drum you haven't heard yet, may have a big difference in sound. It sounds like a reasonable statement to me.
      As for proof, I could care less. If you really want it, go out and get it for yourself. I couldn't prove it even if I wanted to. "significant differences" in the context of this discussion a subjective term. You can't prove anything until you define what a significant differences is. And even if you are able to define it, the test results would only apply to you.

    Omg, the wood and number of plies, mixed plies, diagonal etc.. does not make a difference on tone.. this myth has been busted many times. It's just marketing. The heads used, bearing edge and shell depth are the only factors that dictate the tone.

    • @scottapthorpe6172
      @scottapthorpe6172 Год назад

      Wrong.....different shells of course will provide you with differing tones...I’ve owned several different wood shells... I can certainly say a walnut shell I had was very dark compared to a maple drum I had...

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  Год назад +2

      While we agree that there is a lot of marketing hyperbole around drums and quite a bit of snake oil, shell material and construction does impact the sonic characteristics of the drum. While the heads, bearing edges, and shell dimensions are all key factors, the shell material and construction cannot be ignored, as contributes quite a bit to the sonic performance of the instrument. We look forward to demonstrating this for you with our in-depth comparison of thee four drums in a video next month.

    • @metrodrumstv
      @metrodrumstv Год назад

      If the shell is being properly activated by the heads, (the shell vibrates freely when the heads are lightly tapped) then the frequency characteristics of the shell and also the hardware attached to the shell will be added to the overal tone. It should all work together.

    • @AT-wl9yq
      @AT-wl9yq 11 месяцев назад

      You just watched a video where 4 snare drums sounded different from each other, and the only variable was the type of wood used.

      If that's true, can you provide some credible references to back that statement up? If you can't show us where you get your information from, I think its safe to assume you're not being completely honest.
