  • As Radio 2 goes FM only in August 1990 - the AM service was for the new Radio 5 - a series of information promos and phone-ins ran on MW. Radio 2's sports coverage remained on AM for this two-week period. This recording was made on 15 August 1990.

Back in the days when radio 2 was worth tuning into.

I think it needs to be remembered some parts of the UK had poor or non existent FM service from the BBC, so R2 listeners in this age before the internet, satellite or DAB alternatives were left high and dry with the loss of MW.

I remember at the time there was a clip of Gloria Hunniford was crying "I'll miss you!"

01:10 - I think she meant to say Queen’s Park - not Queens Park Rangers!

People scared out of their wits end in 2018 "to continue to hear your BBC local radio favourites, if you do not happen to find DAB on your set I'm afraid you will have to buy a new radio.".

Smog Monster, Tuning for idiots, Uneducated fools who were still stuck in the way with their old AM and LW Analogue Radio sets when FM was becoming the thing, I was a Radio 1 fan back in the early 80's and had to put up with crackling whistling and poor reception before they went to FM., Unfortunely British people so afraid of new techonolgy it unbelieve.

@@scottpeacock5492 Part of the problem with Radio 1 on 1053 and 1089 as today with Talk Sport was and still is that they had and have multiple high powered MW transmitters transmitting on the SAME frequency. Each transmitter interfered with another on the same frequency.
Had they just divided the country into 3 and for eg Scotland 1053 from one mast in a central location then used 1089 for Northern England and part of Wales and 1107 for the Southern portion then the reception may have been a little better.
I agree tho. It beats me today why AM is still being used. Who wants dull mushy sound when you’ve got FM and DAB?

Not rubbish at all. It was 22 minutes 35 seconds of saying goodbye to a byegone era.

@@dvidclapperton Dodnt need to last 22 minutes 35 seconds tho did it? Besides it’s not like the station was closing it just was no going to broadcast on those particular frequencies anymore.
      It was over done.

Only £10 to buy a new radio that had FM in 1990. Not exactly unaffordable was it.
