General. Marshall and FDR did not want the Marines in Europe because they were afraid The Corps would upstage the Army. But, Eleanor Roosevelt loved The Corps. Her son was a Marine officer.
Europe was too heavy for the marines. The marines are not meant to fight heavy long battles like the ones in europe. Marines are for quick battles like taking islands.
@@davidjuarez1834 And you are correct. Marines are an assault force. Not designed for long campaigns. In the drawn out campaigns in the Pacific, they were teamed with Army units. Such as Bougainville, Saipan, Okinawa. But Gen Marshall stated that as long as he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs no Marines would be in the European theater.
@Snuffy03 The marine corps are really good at propaganda. They like to be loud about it, and that's great. The army's style is don't ask, don't tell. Even though the army usually does most of the work in every war and theater, they never talk about it.
@@davidjuarez1834 And you are correct. The Army has always had most of the burden. In WW1 the Army fielded 64 divisions. The Marines, 2 regiments plus 1 machine gun battallion. In WW2 the Army fielded 91 divisions, The Marines, 6. In Korea the Army fielded 8 divisions, the Marines 1. In Vietnam only 2 Marine divisions were deployed. I am not sure of the Army strength there, because the Army had gone to focusing on brigades rather than divisions. Army also has the budget. It's larger, better equipped. Marine budget comes from the Navy. In my day, we had to make do, as it were. So, yes, the Army always has more troops in the field. Always has, and always will. Today, the Marines have been pared down. No armor anymore. No artillery. No law enforcement units. Air Wing is being reduced. The Corps is returning to its mission it had prior to WW2. It's infantry is eliminating its scout/sniper teams. Reducing the number of infantry battalions.
There were “There were three major theaters of operation during the war: Pacific (22 divisions were deployed to the Pacific), Mediterranean (15 divisions), and Europe (61 divisions)” of Army Next slide…. With the Airborne and Ranger units (who no one can upstage)with OSS (Majority Army) upstage that….😂
I appreciate this documentary as I’m a Marine. We had very limited roles in the European Theater of War as we’re a detachment of the USN -and not an ‘official’ recognized Military branch of the United States. It’s what allows us to invade countries such as Grenada without ‘officially’ being at war..
You probably know better than I, but everything I've read about the USMC is that they are an official Military Branch with it's own Jobs, Aircraft Wing, structure, etc. separate to the Navy- it just happens to fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Navy (since they are Naval Infantry) rather than a separate DOD department. Is that an incorrect assessment of the Corps' purpose and structure?
@@lawsonashurst7314 yes. We’re both saying the same thing, just differently. Sending in Marines doesn’t officially account for US war and no declaration of war is necessary. But yes, we have our own air wing. All under the USN.
As embarrassing as this is to admit, I always thought of the Marines in WW2 as synonymous with the Pacific Theater, but never really thought about them being in Europe and Africa, yet it only makes perfect sense for them to be the first in anywhere there is conflict; Thank you for helping me appreciate this amazing branch even more than I already did, and giving them even more of the credit they deserve.

The USMC involvement with OSS and European resistance groups is some of the most fascinating skullduggery in WW2 lore
Another good one, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bigger picture. The IS Army helped the USMC in Guadalcanal, Philippines, Guam, Saipan, and Okinawa.

In the snow of far-off Northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes,
You will find us always on the job
The United States Marines.
USMC are badasses . My step father fought in the Pacific. He was fearless even after the war. But that's another story for another time
Thanks for sharing his story Ken
Semper Fi to your Dad from another Marine.

The European Theater of Operation had 3 Marines. One PVT, to keep an eye on two LIEUTENANTS and me. So a total of 4 usmc members. 😮◇.
