      It's difficult for people walking into anything new, you don't know enough to separate real information and nonsense and hyperbole. I remember trying to figure out why my pec hurt right at the side from doing bench, I tried looking it up here and the first 20 results were all (not to name names) "one weird trick to fix BLANK" "20 BENCH WORKOUTS YOU NEED TO DO" "Bench isn't growing? TRY THIS!"
      It took me a LONG time to really figure out a lot of stuff because at the time I didn't have anyone I could trust to ask so I flopped about with all these weird *tricks* to fix my problems.

    I invented my own exercises just to save time in the gym by working muscles simultaneously. Here's an example:
    Grab 2 dumbbells.
    Stand on 1 leg with the other leg bent and raised up ( hip flexors, glutes, ankle muscles working). Now with 1 arm perform a shrug - bicep curl - overhead press and repeat x10. At the same time with the other hand perform a lateral raise - hammer curl - tricep kickback while doing a 1 legged RDL.
    It's probably the best 10 minute workout in existence. I now pity all those suckers doing so called 'compound lifts'.

    There's very little reason to invent new exercises simply because there's already so much out there. You think you need to invent something to meet a particular training goal? Have you looked at what the kettlebell sport folks are doing? What about the gymnastics/calisthenics folks? Modern competitive strongmen? How about old-school strongmen? Oly lifters? I can almost guarantee that there are multiple already existing tried and true ways to meet that training goal, most likely better than whatever you'd come up with yourself. And that way people have already studied and improved the exercise, you can learn from their experience. That's my main criticism of Seedman. I think he correctly identifies important things to train, but then he insists on inventing some dumb new proprietary exercise instead of doing a little research and using an already existing and superior way to meet that goal.

    Love that you covered this topic! While I’m all about incorporating some minor tweaks to make an exercise more effective or difficult, there’s a point where it goes too far & even becomes less safe & effective.
    While I actually like Ryan as a person, he’s the poster child of coming up with endless silly variations just to keep the views coming in. The issue is that a good amount of his creations are less effective & less safe than the tried & true exercises, with even small tweaks made to their form. And totally agree that most of his viewers are beginners who will build muscle strength & size doing just about anything in the beginning, so attributing their gains to his exercise creations is far from an accurate way to measure how effective his advice is.

    Since my shoulders and knees creak from swimming hundreds of miles and biking and running 1000s, I modify a few movements to I can work on the body parts I want to work on. For example I do single kettlebell floor chest presses while in the bridge position. Seems to put less stress on my shoulders. The way the KB hangs down positioning the weight directly behind by wrist works well for me as the lateral movement is minimized. Being in a bridge position I can squeeze my glute on hamstring on the working side to seemingly take more stress off my shoulder.
    Works for me at least.

    Skateboard rows. I put my feet against a bar across the open end of the home squat rack and use the low cable like a C2 Rower. In public gyms I use the C2 for a couple of minutes to start my warm-up. Make sure to use a board with a flat deck, and don't sit so far forward that you flip it. Don't ask me how I know. It's a fun exercise: speed and noise. Safe so far (a year or so). Highly variable: light for warm-up, a little heavier for strength endurance in back and quads. Lat pulldown bar for rear delts, double rope hack for extended lat ROM and ability to simulate real (on water) rowing motion. I row on Long Island Sound and its tidal rivers, so that's good. I still have the money and space the C2 would have taken up.

    Regarding the 'feeling the movement' philosophy: a personal great example of a compound exercise that when I do it I almost never feel the lats but the next day they get destroyed like nothing else is the Front Lever (albeit the Advanced Tuck variant as that's what I can pull off for now). I'm a firm believer that FL is a better exercise for developing the back than the majority of 'newly invented' exercises out there.

    • @GVS
      @GVS  3 года назад +5

      Yup, lifting in the grand scheme of things isn't THAT old especially with all the new equipment, so it's best never to totally discount everything. On the other hand, a lot of stuff is definitely crap and just done for attention/views. Can be difficult for a beginner in particular to sort through everything!

    • @DDB-91
      @DDB-91 3 года назад +1

      The rdl has come on so far now that's its primary role is no longer and accessory. In the vast majority of programmes, rdl is the primary mover for the hip hinge. I'd say RDLs are a favoured movement over a conv dead. I'm not saying rdls are better than conv deads, I'm not a believer in 1 movement over the other but I personally think the rdl trumps the conv dead in terms of risk reward and general progression.
      This doesn't apply to powerlifters or strongman, of course, more so to the general man or woman whom lifts seriously/recreationally.

      They’re far less fatiguing, but the stimulus is objectively far lower as well. You can’t really compare the two. RDL can be a main movement, Good mornings are accessory work at best
      They’re good though! If someone can’t do hyperextensions for some reason, good mornings are a good option.

    • @rabbigoldbergsilverstein2899
      @rabbigoldbergsilverstein2899 3 года назад

      @@BaldOmniMan obviously you should do both. I still do rdls now and then. But I primarily squat over deadlifts. And I’ve found good mornings being one of the best accessory for squat. You use much much less weight with the good mornings. That’s why I find them very easy on your cns.

  • @omon2766

    Considering Ryan Humiston’s videos are usually catered towards beginners, it makes sense on why a lot of people say that his stuff works and how his knowledge is so good. The exercises could work if done with enough intensity, but aren’t as good when compared to the fundamentals. When I played football in high school our strength training coach gave us really shitty workouts (probably less effective than Humiston’s exercises) and I still made progress since I had only been lifting for 4 months prior and was new to the gym. I thought he was a genius and that his advice was the holy grail of gains. I didn’t realize it was bad until I learned how to properly train and had made way better strength and muscle gains when experimenting and going really hard at my workouts in just a matter of months.

      Beginners eventually have to smarten up, they won't make progress on only 20-30 rep fluff isolation work very long. It's always nice having a 14 year old tell me I'm an idiot for doing compound movements because they consumed too much Instagram content.

    Do you think i should reduce the weight on my pendlay row? I see it as a power movement and do low reps but i use a little leg drive and don't feel it too much. It is also hard to progress. Should i reduce the weight, do higher reps (8-12) and feel it more or continue as is. In a beginner btw.

    • @GVS
      @GVS  3 года назад

      Depends on what you want. I tend to do rows from the floor as heavy as possible with lots of leg drive. Maybe stay strict as a beginner though.

    When you get to 150kg minimum, you can start inventing your own exercises: high pulls, zercher traps, zercher shrugs and zercher front raises. Twinklean-X has no business doing so.

    Hi Geoffrey, I started lifting in November. It is now in july and my weight is now back to what it was when I first started. I am at a lower bodyfat percentage now and I am more muscular. Is that how muscle is usually built? I was at 147 when I started then I went down to 138 and over the months, I am about at 146-147 pounds now.
