People complain about washcloths and towels being rough and not soft with line drying. I can remember reading magazines about hygiene etc. in thec1960’s and they encouraged using rougher cloths for exfoliation. To this day, I cannot stand a soft cloth as it seems to be not successful in washing off grime, skin oils etc. I was taught by the best and these less than ideal outcomes on many things are normal for me such as extra time for scratch cooking, lawn care not professional looking when I do, scratchy washcloths and towels. I have a humorous memory in high school of my line dried bra having a brier in it. Then there was the time I tried unsuccessfully to do my own car care, and learned speedily to leave car maintenance to the experts…..my car survived, and I learned a lifelong lesson. Love you Dawn ❤️

I do many of these…even if I can afford new. Why waste? Another idea is repurposing food too. For example, If I have any leftover chicken, I toss it in to a freezer bag until I have enough for a pot pie. All those small amounts add up. Another thing is mushy berries that aren’t moldy but still good. I put them in a pot and add a little sugar and corn starch. I cook until thickened. This is great with some granola, ice cream, oatmeal or over pancakes. A leftover rotisserie chicken can be used for chicken salad and use the carcass for bone broth. You use this as a topic for your channel too.

Nowadays when the woman of the house works outside the home 40 plus hours a week hanging your clothes out to dry in another chore. It's easier to put them right into the dryer then go on to doing other house chores.

I do most these also. I also open windows early in the morning and in the evening when the temps are cooler on hot days to cut cost of running the air conditioning. We use our an attic house fan to pull hot air out and cool air in. I close up the house afterwards. We turn on our ceiling fan when we sleep. I use rain barrels to water our plants. I have found many great finds on trash day that I i picked up. Some need a little mending. We do our own landscaping. We host holiday potluck meals. We have been able to take our children on wonderful vacations, because we camped. We have had struggled at times in our life, but we have had God bless us with family, friends and neighbors who helped us get through those times. And we have been able to help others.

Have hung laundry to dry "forever". I use my dryer for just a few minutes to fluff the wrinkles out of shirts, slacks, etc., then I hang outside or inside, weather-dependent. The benefits are many: better for the environment, savings on the utility bill, your clothing, etc. lasts longer, and if your dryer has little use it will last a lot longer also. The BIG BONUS is the smell of sun and wind dried laundry--the best smell ever, imo. I live in the US. Those of us who hang laundry to dry are definitely a rare breed.

I love my dryer. I either do laundry very early by 6 or 7am or late, after 9pm so the dryer works best for me.
I do grow some vegs.and herbs.
    We compost.I save flower seeds.
I keep AC around 77 or76. I use fans to blow the air around. I put the heat lower and I dress warmer and used a heated throw. I use less dishwashing detergent, dish detergent and laundry detergent. Things get clean. I scrub tough spots on dishes and pretreat stains. I use less shampoo.I open my dishwasher and let dishes air dry and don't use the dry cycle.

We stockpile dry goods like sugar, coffee, rice, beans and oatmeal. I don’t scratch cook much but I do make my own flour and corn tortillas . My husband will take apart and fix just about anything which is very good . We also buy almost everything used or second hand. A lot of older items are better made and last longer. Im working on the debt part and the gardening part as well. Also AC we have window units so we only have the unit on either in the living room or bedroom and keep all other rooms closed that we’re not using.

Hi Dawn! What I utilize out of those saving money techniques would be the temperature settings for air conditioning. During the summer, I always set my air up, especially if I'm leaving the house for a while, usually more than an hour. Once I get back home, I reset my air to it's original setting before I left the house. Many people think this does not save any 💰, but it definitely does...yes it takes a while to get the temp down, but it stays there much longer once that temperature is reached.

I am an excellent seamstress..making clothing from new yardage is not really economical at this point…mending almost always makes sense. I don’t own a dryer, don’t turn on the A/C unless I have company, nothing but the fridge is left plugged in, all else is unplugged unless in use, vinegar and baking soda is all that you need for cleaning. Order discount postage stamps, use the library, grow tomato’s, green peppers and other easy veg…if you have skill and space have a more elaborate garden. Spices grow nicely on a windowsill. Sweep rather than vacuum, charge cell phones and tablets in the car while doing errands. And that’s just the beginning of the list.

If you put a laundry softener in the wash you can avoid getting that stiff feeling when hanging clothes out. Additionally, it helps get pet hair off the clothes. I read that if you take dryer sheets and put a couple in with your wash it acts like liquid softener. So I got some scent free dryer sheets and tried it. I found out that it removes pet hair from the clothes, too. I don't have a dryer, which takes off pet hair. But it also destroys clothes.

I have a little jingle posted in my laundry area, "Use it up and wear it out; Make it do or do without." I think it's a quote from Ben Franklin, but even if it isn't it's a great motto! I use most of those tips. Definitely make my own spice blends - mine are far fresher and tastier than the over-salted store bought version. Ditto mayonnaise - with a stick blender it is a 90-second recipe. I live in a hard water area, so I don't use super cheap Zote, because soap-based products create soap scum in and on the fibres of my clothes and linens which is no good. But I use minimal purchased products and rarely run the dishwasher.

About hanging your clothes out on the line...we also did that growing up, but afterwards we ironed certain clothes that needed to be ironed, so that they wouldn't be wrinkled. We also used some type of spray starch (which I don't remember the name of) on them before ironing them.
In the summer, since our garage faces south, (not sure if that makes a difference or not, but it seems to), we have a large I think they call it an industrial grade fan that's attached to the garage ceiling that we run during hot weather, because it actually seems to help keep not only the garage but also the inside of the living room, which is right next to the garage, cooler if we do run it out in the garage. We've always believed it helped the a/c by doing that.

How to make your own Bisquick. Which is expensive to buy and affordable to DIY:
In a large bowl, whisk together to combine: 8C All-Purpose Flour, 1 1/2 C Powdered Milk, 1/4C Baking Powder*, 1T Salt. Then use a Pastry Blender to mix in 1 1/2C Beef Suet (or Shortening, or Lard). (This is where most of the flavor comes from. I recommend Atora Beef Suet)
    * Baking Powder is different than Baking Soda. This recipe needs Baking Powder.
Biscuits: using the Bisquick you just made:
6C biscuit mix, Mix in 2C cold water add little at a time. Sprinkle flour on the counter and knead the dough about 10 times don't over knead. Roll out dough to 1/3inch, cut out biscuits with a biscuit cutter. Bake in a preheated oven at 425F for 10-15 minutes. 12-20 biscuits. These freeze well
Pancakes: 2C biscuit mix, 1C milk, 2 eggs. Preheat your pan. Cook on medium heat (4 out of 10 electric) until the edges are firmed, flip pancake and cook bottom about minute. Yields 6-8.
    Lemon Blueberry Scones:
2 1/2C biscuit mix, 2T sugar, zest off a whole lemon, 1/3C of milk, 2 eggs, 1C of blueberries*.
Combine mix and zest; Combine milk and eggs. Then mix wet and dry ingredients until all is moistened. Turn out on lightly floured counter, knead as little as possible*. Roll out to form a rectangle. Evenly distribute blueberries over the top and press them into dough. Cut into four rectangles, then cut rectangles into triangles. Bake in preheated oven at 425F for 12 minutes. Yield 8.
*Hint, freeze blueberries, easier to cut into triangles and juice doesn't squirt out.
*Hint, if you use a large piece of plastic wrap, turn the dough out onto the plastic, then fold over the rest of the plastic wrap and use that to then press out dough without getting your hands or counter goopy. Once the blueberries are pressed in, use the plastic wrap to tri-fold the dough over from the bottom and the top and this will give you your rectangle and will fold the blueberries inside the dough.
You just used all of your bisquick, need to make more. ; )

Put cut up bread on cookie sheet in oven usually after I’ve made supper and have oven hot already. Turn oven off and leave bread in with door closed. If bread is to fresh or you have a lot on sheet may have to turn pieces and repeat. Crush dry bread and freeze to be used when needed. Can hardly wait for zucchini season as I enjoy sliced zucchini breaded with flour, egg wash and bread crumbs with spices then bake for 20 minutes in oven .

In Richfield Minnesota clothes lines are not allowed...We created a backyard sunporch out of the most basic design..used reused lumber/windows that we found.. Now that we've moved we have enough space inside to hang our clothes on a wooden clothes rack in a room until the things are dry and then we fold everything up and put it away.

I go to the library to buy old cook books. It's cheeper than antique stores, I like the older ones for ideas and the foods are not something I have not grown up with.

Keeping a starter is like having another child. A rather stupid and spoiled one at that.
I use a poolish instead. It's like sour dough but it uses Comercial yeast and only sits around for 12 to 24 hours before you use it. No mold issues. No starter to discard. You feed it at its creation and forget about it until the next morning. Painless and worry free.

Love your videos, here in Scotland most people would dry clothes outdoor on line, weather can change quickly and always on look out for rain but still feel that drying outside is better, fresh smelling clothes and don’t usually have problems, but using a small amount of distilled white vinegar in rinse can help with keeping towels feeling soft.

I do just about all of this list (I don't make all my own cleaners and bread, but do use vinegar/baking soda to clean and make my own yoghurt/soup/etc.. ). I've a table outside I picked up for free waiting to be painted, a new to me dress from charity shop I want to shorten for a wedding next month, I've clothes currently on the washing line, I'm about to go out for a walk to the shops to pick up food for lunch tomorrow. I don't have a big garden, but big enough for rhubarb / herbs / salad / radishes / beans / etc... I'm hoping next summer to expand out quite a bit. The neighbours know they can (and some do) call to the front garden and take any of the herbs - I've sage / rosemary / oregano / thyme / lemon balm / lemon verbena / chives / black currants / celery / fennel - I often use these for cooking/salads. None of the front garden takes minding, except to cut it back a bit, they just keep growing back each year.
I don't consider these to be old fashioned but environmentally and budget friendly. This is just how I live, I don't have to think about it.

Live in an apartment. Washing is either by dedicated plunger and repurposed square kitty kitter bucket which I like better than a round bucket. Thankfully my tub has a short and long handicapped bar which helps with the start of drip drying, before I sometimes hand wring. Sometimes I use my workhorse 350W twin tub which I purchased when I moved in. The spinner worked great, but as expected on online comments of this gadget reviews, the spinner went out in about seven months. Left my larger spinner behind thinking it was not going to fit inside my new, much smaller bathroom. That had its quirks, but did get the job done if pulling out water. A spinner cut my drying times down to about half day or so. When I am ready to hang my laundry, I put clean mop heads or a cleaning rag, under the shower rods and bath towl holders. To catch any unexpected drips. Later, I have these damp items to mop and clean. The clothes go on either baby-toddler clothes hangars or larger clothes hangers. Clotheclips are a must as I use a portable fan to help circulate, air dry and clothes do not slip off. Lots of work, but my laundry portion of the electric bills, even with the spinners, minimal. My clothes I use Percil as several other brands fail to clean well. Works great for my place. Sure wish I had the option to dry my clothes outside on a clothesline.

I live in Tasmania, Australia and hanging clothes outside to dry when it’s warm enough is very common here.

Feeding my cats less to reduce waste is a challenge. The problem with that is that saving cat food in the refrigerator in a plastic bag usually means they don't like it when it re-emerges. I waste a fortune in cat food. I used to mix half dry and half wet together for the cats and they liked that. But sometimes now it's a bust, and if you try to save it, it all turns to mush. And we all know how cats feel about mush. They'll starve before they eat it, and they will sit there and stare at you as they get weaker and weaker, and then fall over, just to show you what a terrible person you are. So, my house is a food buffet, and as a result I have to plan more carefully. I have found that mixing wet food with water to make a stew, not a soup, is something they like. Sprinkling dry food on top will get them to eat when the straight wet food is being ignored.
Serving less at a meal also saves money with kids of all ages. We often load their plates down like they are little truck drivers, and they don't eat that much. I've seen so many videos and in them the kids are sitting at plates a Sumo wrestler couldn't finish. Often it is thrown in the garbage after they've taken a few bites. Sometimes letting kids serve themselves works better than placing the plate of food in front of them. School cafeterias, one of the biggest waste facilities around, could save money by letting kids take only the size serving they want. They can have more if they want.
Back in "the day," the family meal meant serving bowls or platters on the table, and everyone would take from that and pass it around. If someone isn't hungry, they simply don't take very much. Instead of fixing a child a hamburger, fix half a burger, and keep the other half if they want it. Some foods are too hard to save for the next meal, and kids get a "yuck" response to leftovers.

I'm older and only have three cats now. Food bill much lower and they don't eat as much. I always have dry food out and give them wet once a day. Cats, like kids, are finicky and what they eat one day, they hate the next. Good luck, but they will eat when hungry.

Hanging clothes on the line? Not me! I'd have to drag the clothes up from the basement, walk around to the backyard, hang them up with clothespins, bring them all back in, if it doesn't rain, deal with insects or bird droppings, drag them upstairs, and fold a bunch of wrinkled clothes.
