    MS&T is hands down my favourite series full stop. I am limping along with your Malazan warband and it says here that Erikson cannot tie Williams' shoes. The Tolkien resemblance probably stops at more clearly defined good vs. evil characters than the shades of grey' found in popular grimdark stories today, but having said that there are still some surprises. While not as meandering as WoT, as dark as ASOIAF, or as hopelessly convoluted as MBOTF, don't delude yourself in thinking that Williams' epic tale is simplistic. It just reads better than those other series because, as you have astutely predicted, Tad employs a beautiful writing style that doesn't have you scrambling for the nearest dictionary or multi-page list of, largely marginal, characters. Prepare to really enjoy epic fantasy once again.

  • @FrancT-
    @FrancT- 2 года назад +25

    I appreciate older fantasy more and more every day. Tolkien awakened my love for fantasy and writers like John Gwynne remind me why I love fantasy in the first place! Heck, even Tolkien reminds me why I love fantasy still, with his stories like The Children of Hurin, which is amazing and grim as well. I love modern fantasies like Mistborn, Stormlight, First Law, etc. But that classic fantasy setting will always be more exciting to me if they are executed well. Like, an urban fantasy written today will be an enjoyable read for me with memorable moments if done well, but a fantasy in the style of ASOIAF or Memory, sorrow, and thorn will always be more memorable to me, despite the saturated market!

      Children of Huron is the most underrated Tolkien book IMO it is almost as good as The Hobbit and LOTR! It is also a fantastic tragedy, it's the first book that ever made me cry!

    A lot of people got into fantasy in different doors. Most entered through Lord of the Rings and traveled Middle-Earth, other through wheel of time and some with a song of Ice and Fire. I, however, feel like I'm lucky to have entered through Memory Sorrow and thorn and traveled Osten Ard as my personal introduction at the ripe old age of 14.

    This is my favorite fantasy series of all time, to the point where I'm unfortunately kind of dismissive of any others. Nothing else has captured my attention as much and it's hard to compete. I read it early on in my youth and now after a long break, the story continues on as an adult with tad williams writing all these new books. Can't wait to see how it all ends. Hopefully the film or television universe recognizes and recreates it one of these days as a faithful high budget movie series or a show. I think a cartoon or an anime is the best choice.

They're lively and engaging reads with a relatively straightforward plot. That is: you don't have to juggle dozens of major/minor characters/plots. Events and people are memorable. One good way to think about it is if you were looking for an evolutionary link between The Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire, this would be it. It's very Tolkienesque, while at the same time feeling a lot like a proto-aSoIaF.
    Also, I'm hoping you enjoy this enough that it inspires you to move on to Tad Williams' Magnus Opus: Otherland. It's one of the all-time great science fiction series and given your love and passion for all things reading, I'd be shocked if Otherland didn't end up one of your favorite series all-time.

    Hey mike, I’d like to join you on that read along, I know you are crazy busy with people constantly telling you to read this an that, but if you end up liking memory sorrow an thorn, his other series shadow play is very traditional like that, I wanna say it’s tad Williams writing style in general, but it’s a little slow on plot because he really takes his time fleshing out and building the world an a homey touch to his characters. Idk if this will be the same fore memory sorrow and thorn but we will find out Jan 1st 💪🏼

    I'm down to reread this. Been a couple decades. I remember really enjoying what Tad Williams did with the 'chosen one' trope

  • @Sehestedtify
    @Sehestedtify Год назад

    I sometimes compare MEMORY, SORROW, AND THORN to Lawrence Kasdan's SILVERADO. Is it terribly original? Nope. Is it trope after trope after trope? Yup. But the fact remains: NO ONE DOES IT BETTER. Just as Lawrence Kasdan's SILVERADO is a sincere and flawless love letter to the classic Western, Tad Williams's MEMORY, SORROW, AND THORN is a sincere and flawless love letter to everything we love about "classic" Fantasy. You remember in SILVERADO when the sharpshooter shots the hats off his pursuers? Do you grown and say, "Not that again!" No, you applaud and say, "That's the way you do it!" Same with the gambler with a heart of gold. Or the noble outlaw. Or the corrupt sheriff. Or jumping off the roof and right into the saddle. "THAT is the way you do it!"
    Same is true with Tad Williams in this series. Orphan with a mysterious past! Magic swords! Dark lords! Forest-dwelling elves! Dark wizards! A quest! A dragon! Corrupted kings! Noble princes! Horse lords! Redemption! Damnation! Even a feisty princess! It's all here, and it's all done perfectly. Every time you get to the next trope, your eyes are too delighted to roll, because your heart is shouting, "THAT is the way you do it!"
    MEMORY, SORROW, AND THORN is one of the few Fantasy series that I never tire of re-reading.

    I've decided that I'm reading it! (After Mistborn)

    One more comment. If anyone likes audiobooks the narrator of Dragonbone Chair is really great. Each character and culture has a distinct voice. 10/10 recommend.

    I’ll be joining in on this read along. I am still on the Malazan read along but not really enjoying it. I’m kinda hate reading it, but I want to complete the series. Tad Williams seems more my style as Asoiaf is my favorite series along with wheel of time and kingkiller. If tad williams writes anything like Robin Hobb or Rothfuss I think I will really enjoy this series.

    It sounds like you have the right mindset going into this. Especially when you can understand the setup that Fellowship was doing for LOTR. This is my favourite fantasy series. It saved me during one of the roughest periods of my life. Hope you enjoy it.

    The subject matter was similar to all the books of the era, but the writing was superior to almost everything that came out. That was the game changer for the Fantasy genre.

    Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn is pretty great. I think you'll really enjoy it.
    The only reason I can see that you might not like it is that you thought Assassin's Quest drug on... well. Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn is glacially paced at times.

      Glacially paced but every page does move the story along (unlike, let’s say, the slog in WoT, where you could cut half of those books and not miss any story).

      @@scottferris2686 As someone who didn't read WoT until it was finished, there's never been any "slog" for me in the first place. I totally understand people who read the series as it was coming out being pissed about those four books though.

    Maybe I read this at the right time but I remember finding the Polish translation in the library when I was about 15 or 16 and it blew my mind back then and I would then borrow the entire set of 6 books (cause the Polish edition split To Green Angel Tower into FOUR physical books) whenever I saw them all available in the library, blaze through them in under a week and then do that again in a few months. Since then I also read it twice in English (a friend from Spain who would often track down English language books ordered them for me from Ebay which I believe was stil not available in Poland at that time).
    Maybe it's time for another reread (even though I'm a bit late, to join you since I'm reading something already but maybe I'll catch up for book 2 or 3 haha).

    You are amazingly well-prepared for this series! :) Seems as though everyone has provided good commentary on why it's a worthwhile read. I'll just add that the characterization and writing is so good that book length means nothing here. I love being lost in the story, and not concerned about how long the book actually takes. It'll be over too quickly, no matter what.

    • @mikesbookreviews

      Definitely. I don’t read as a race. If I’m loving the world and characters I don’t want it to end (i.e. The Stand could have been 500 pages longer and I’d have loved it).

    I read the first volume after finding out that this series had influenced GRRM. I did see the elements that led from one thing to another and I liked the writing style, but there were lots of things happening and I felt exhausted when I finished it, so I wasn't ready for the next volume, but I still want to give it a try at some time in the future.
