Diaspora players in the senior Indonesian national football team have become a benchmark for local junior U17, U20, and U23 football players. Local junior players must have the same skills and achievements as their seniors. That's how Indonesian football achievements work today. The Indonesian U23 junior national team has successfully reached the semifinals of the 2024 Asian Cup. And later, fans are waiting for the achievements of the Indonesian U17 and U20 junior national teams in the 2025 Asian Cup.
Being a Surabayan ("Arek Suroboyo") and a Persebaya fan, we have a long and proud tradition of nurturing our own talents that would went on to become legends not just for the club and city, but for the country too. And last Tuesday was a irrefutable proof that our fully homegrown talents can also compete with the diaspora and the heritage, two best player of the match, Marselino Ferdinan Philipus and Rizky Ridho Ramadhani, are the product of that long and proud tradition. So, while yes the naturalization will be a challenge for the grassroot development, it isn't true that Indonesia have had no notable grassroot centres, beside Persebaya, clubs like Persija, Persib and PSM also have huge academies churning out hundreds of talents every year.
basically we do not lack talent. for example Giovanni van Bronckhorst who has pure Indonesian Maluku blood. Only lack of modern programs at the grass root. Even in this bad situation, we still produce talents like Rizky Ridho and Marselino Ferdinand. Two of them are first team players who gain their spots among the diaspora who play in Europe. Imagine when we finally work on our grass root program, how much talent we could produce.
Grassroots football has failed in Australia too. Australia needs to start shipping 10 and 11 year olds to UK again. I love the Aleague but the last two decades of football development has been rubbish.
developing Football and the grassroot is all about money and that what my country struggle with too. Funding from government is really needed. But it also so tricky to convince the government.
The thing is this can only be a transitionary project. The pool of mixed-race Dutch players is getting smaller each year. You need at least one grandparent of Indonesian nationality. There was big wave of Indo migration to Holland post-Independence. And there's been smaller waves of refugees from Maluku etc. Eventually Thorir is gonna run out of Dutch-Indonesians. So that's why it's important to use this talent for local players/institutions to piggyback on.
The fact is that there are 300,000 people with Indonesian passports currently living in the Netherlands. In my opinion it will not decrease, in fact they will increase their motivation to become football players. If you look at the recent decline in the European economy, the future will be better in Asia. In Europe they are nobody, in Indonesia they can be legendary athletes or public figures. They are superstars in Indonesia.😂

Naturalization is all about setting a standard for the Indonesian national team-like saying, "If you wanna play for the national team, this is the minimum standard you need to meet." After the WC26 qualifications, Mr. Erick Thohir will start the grassroots project, and level up the Indonesian league to make it one of the top 5 in Southeast Asia and the top 15 in Asia. Some stakeholders are already working on developing future players. A bunch of young talents have been sent to the Qatar Football Academy, Portugal, and England (Garuda Select), and more are on the way. Plus, FIFA really wants to help grow Indonesian football-they’ve even set up their Southeast Asia HQ office in Jakarta!

It's easy to say "we need to develop young players", but to really do it, you need to see the obstacles first. Financial, infrastructures, geographical challenges.
Thats fact of modern football.. you can named many other country as indonesian do.. even in europe... Football is become Industry, thats why we PSSI make a short, med, and long term plan.. we refuse to become a "Supporter" many decade on WC to support other nation.. Indonesia with more than 300.000.000 peoples madness in football all across the country, indonesia just need in the right way by the right man for wake up from the sleeping asian giant of football
As an Indonesian I can confirm that this is a very dilematic situation for us. Yes we are love and enjoying our current success and rise, because we are really tired seeing our national team consistently acting like a bunch of clowns for every single year on the international stages. But in the same time we also start having concern about the future of our grassroots and youth development. Most of us are actually not really care about who will fighting for our crest on the pitch, as long they share the same passion, fighting spirits, and love to our beloved nation like us, it's fine. But we can't keep relying on them to carry our name on the football pitch untill the end of the world, we also need to do something for our native-born talents. It'll be a lie if any Indonesians said that they didn't want a squad full of native-born players representing us on the World Cup stage. PSSI (Indonesian FA) need to upgrade our grassroots, youth development, and domestic competition quality, but that's always the same problem we've faced for decades because they still not doing their job as a football stakeholders. Even though Erick Thohir promised that he and his crews in PSSI will fix our youth development and domestic competitions, but he's still a politician and a bussinessman even though he has footballing background too. Just like what people always said to never 100% trust the sweet words come from politician's mouth. I appreciate what he done for our national team with this project, but I won't ever fully trust him at least untill he do something to our youth development system and the domestic competitions. I didn't want our current rise ended as a mirage in the middle of a dry desert.
Actually Indonesia try to copying the success of "Milkshake Morocco". Mix of local player and mixblood/halfblood/heritage player. I think recruiting heritage player should be continue until FIFA delete the regulation. So, as long as the regulation still exists, Indonesia should do that, because i see more benefit. They can be a benchmark for local player and make local player try harder to compete in the team. Cause bro, competition is everywhere in this life.
Indonesia's biggest issue, for me, is their emotional implosion. They tend to be unable to control their behaviour when they achieved major wins at some points. I often observe it when I used to visit Indonesia (I am Chechen-Swedish). Multiple occasions, their national team often falters very quickly after early triumphs. If they cannot control it, it shall backfire on them hard.
As long as it is legal & in accordance with FIFA rules, then all countries have the right to do it. don't worry PSSI also works for the development of young players, it's just not exposed by the media, you could say the media is only interested in the Indonesian national team, that's why news about the development of young Indonesian players is almost unheard of. PSSI chairman, Erick Thohir, former president of inter & has several clubs abroad knows better what to do than just a football observer.
To put it simple, Indonesia has lost their way from the old leaders... If you lost your way, you need someone as your guide to know where you want to go, and after that you could walk on your own Indonesia did that, with many naturalization from dutch... The youngsters of Indonesian could see the best example directly, the player that got nurtured in the best football region So in short term, they will gain from naturalization In long term, they also will gain from the grassroots that got nurtured The main problem is, If Indonesia could keep the gear running and reformed the youth facilities or not Which is I hope it could
One big key issue to understand is that Indonesia has historically struggled to control their emotion. Their football team, if win something big, will boast like they are King, and this has undeniably caused Indonesia's catastrophe in multiple occasions. They have recently beaten Saudi Arabia 2-0, and it is no doubt, a great triumph. But when their media proclaimed they are "better" than Argentina, you should not expect Indonesia to advance with that kind of attitude.
The thing is, we've joked "King Indo" like a long time ago. When we were drawn against Japan in the Asian cup, our people said things like "Japan, do you want to go home yourself or do you want us to send you home" to the point that Japanese media picked it up as a news. We know damn well we're gonna get cooked lmao
The grassroots were destroyed by many factors: - A rampage mafia practice by the FA board members, including a conflict of interest, bribed referees, etc. - A promising junior player gaining bad influence from their senior (bad health habit, drunk, etc), ruining their future as a player. This needs to change first. Only after these changes that we will see a better result from the grassroots.
Indonesia wouldn’t even come close to beating Saudi arabia with their homegrown talents. You have to continue development of the grassroots besides International success.
Hopefully this generation of Indonesian players can build a lasting foundation for the years to come. But it will be down to the FA to capitalise and reinvest in the grassroots system. Thanks for watching!

We have domestic talents. But our environment does not support that to happen. There are many reasons that are difficult to explain for me who is just an ordinary national team supporter. PSSI has always made me sick of football because they always create scandals such as dualism and the unresolved deaths of 135+ people in Kanjuruhan. But at least there has been movement since Erick Thohir became chairman. Indeed, some say this is illegal or instant, as long as it does not violate FIFA rules, then I think other countries can follow what we do. The national team is good, the league is heading in a good direction, youth development is still difficult but we continue to try.
If we talk about grassroots we don't even started cause lack of finance and human resources we don't have football system at all like european and profecional footballer in here above 1 milion even tho we have 270 milion population. Fyi
This vid doesn't do justice to Indonesian football development. Framing naturalization of Indonesian diaspora as costly? Go look at Indonesia's U17 and U20 and see what have they achieved, and without so many diaspora players at that.
Indonesia doesn't follow anyone, this is just a globalized world and Indonesia with a large population have diasporas around the world, when these diaspora have quality and have a will to play for Indonesia, we are very welcome
@cakeblues nope. China diasporas are everywhere. When the country needs them, many diaspora Will go back. In western, it doesn't work like that. They buy anyone using immigration rules.

FIFA rules about naturalization are not strict enough. One shouldn't play for a national team of a country he has never lived in just because he isn't good enough for the country he is actually from. This is impacting international football as a whole as countries that opt to actually develop players and give their youth a chance are penalised.
Hahaha, 2024 this mindset still exist..the world is getting borderless and global, many countries do it for decades..Morocco, Australia, Turkey,Jamaica, Iraq, USA, Philippines etc have been doing this for decades for calling back their foreign born players..

Or bring back NSL.
Why not making the Super League with the SEA Nations and New Zealand?
@@viverepericoloso7627 Australian fanbase are even less likely to watch that than their own teams. Attendance for AFC Champions League is low.
developing Football and the grassroot is all about money and that what my country struggle with too. Funding from government is really needed. But it also so tricky to convince the government.

Thx for the video, eric tohir is also fixing the team of early age if you check our youth is also rising

Yes this is only short term, there is long term plan on going
The fact is that there are 300,000 people with Indonesian passports currently living in the Netherlands. In my opinion it will not decrease, in fact they will increase their motivation to become football players. If you look at the recent decline in the European economy, the future will be better in Asia. In Europe they are nobody, in Indonesia they can be legendary athletes or public figures. They are superstars in Indonesia.😂
@@fivetwenty162It's true that they were just an ordinary athlete in Europe, but in Indonesia, they are worshipped like a god.

Amazing video. I love and enjoyed watching it. I will subscribe it to watch more interesting videos,
erick thohir and coach shin take mostly young player, some of the older player are the exception coz they are a regular player in european top league, so for the next 10 years we are still confident with the progress, erick thohir fixing thing from the top to bottom, after the national team he start to fix the league slowly, start from implementing var to reduce referee mistakes, and he starting to improving the coaching situation with subsidies for taking coaching license so indonesia have more quality coach hoping they can nurture a better player, and they tried to copy the dutch on the junior competition and localizing the scout to every region and the region scouted team will play a nation wide competion so it will be easier for the national team scouting, erick thohir already did all of that to make sure the grassroot player can improve and also have a fair chance to represent the country, its definitely a very long project and cant be done in his term so i hope whoever his successor later have the same passion in football as erick thohir and can make indonesian football rise just like what japan did in the 90 when they start laying the foundation and we can see their result now
I love the way u present the vid, keep it up sir!
Children in Indonesia need a hero first. Even though many of the national team players were not born in Indonesia, but our culture and people can accept them as part of Indonesia.

Hi, thank you for your review about Indonesia's football.
Anyway, the music is quite loud and distracting, I couldn't hear your voice clearly. Great documentation. Cheers..
The revolution start from when Indonesia selected as U-20 World cup Host
They assign 2018 Korean Coach named Shin Tae Yong
And this where begin his Journey bring Hopes for their fans
But somehow they had problem story cuz Indonesia and Israel
And Indonesia got almost banned again
This where the story that Indonesia got last clutch save from Indonesia 7th Presiden"Mr.Joko widodo" and Indonesia leader Federation now "Mr.Erick Thohir"
They save indonesia from 2 problem
1.the problem between Indonesia and Israel
2.The Problem about the club tragedy in stadium
Shin Tae Yong is the Visioner future Indonesia football
And Erick Thohir keep it the momentum
Without Shin Tae Yong, maybe your guys will not get hype momentum until today

BEST MOMENT IN FOOTBALL TO MODERN ERA
Saya optimis indonesia akan melaju ke babak 4 kualifikasi piala dunia berikutnya 😊
Naturalization is all about setting a standard for the Indonesian national team-like saying, "If you wanna play for the national team, this is the minimum standard you need to meet."
After the WC26 qualifications, Mr.
Siapa saja yang mengharumkan nama bangsa dan negara itulah orang asli Indonesia. Yg lain seperti saya cuma numpang hidup di Indonesia karena kebetulan lahir di Indonesia
i think indonesia already invested in its youth, still no sustainable system though, you should get more researcch mister journalist, because albeit very early stage of investment, all youth teams of indonesia already qualify for asian cup for each group aged that is and all of them still has chance to be in world cup of their age
Indonesia was democration country. Freedom country, like US. come to indonesia, feel the energy
In my 36 years of watching indonesian football..this timeline is the most exiting times ever.❤
It's easy to say "we need to develop young players", but to really do it, you need to see the obstacles first. Financial, infrastructures, geographical challenges.
Dont forget the birocracy
Kemajuan sepakbola indonesia adalah praktek sepakbola instan, lewat jalan naturalisasi pemain
Thats fact of modern football.. you can named many other country as indonesian do.. even in europe...
Football is become Industry, thats why we PSSI make a short, med, and long term plan.. we refuse to become a "Supporter" many decade on WC to support other nation..
We got huge market, we want convert to gain our national team..
No one BELIEVE

You didnt mention indra sjafri, actually he good enough. In here, naturalization also becom pro-contra. But they said its just shor term strategy. And they will build competition and training coach in internationa standard.
I didn't want our current rise ended as a mirage in the middle of a dry desert.
bro the background music is louder than the narration. Great documentation anyway. Keep up good work
Actually Indonesia try to copying the success of "Milkshake Morocco".
Let's we all appreciates the man who really cares about our beloved sport of Football, The One and Only, Bapak Erick Thohir.
To put it simple, Indonesia has lost their way from the old leaders...
If you lost your way, you need someone as your guide to know where you want to go, and after that you could walk on your own
Indonesia did that,
with many naturalization from dutch... The youngsters of Indonesian could see the best example directly, the player that got nurtured in the best football region
So in short term, they will gain from naturalization
In long term, they also will gain from the grassroots that got nurtured
The main problem is, If Indonesia could keep the gear running and reformed the youth facilities or not
Which is I hope it could
One big key issue to understand is that Indonesia has historically struggled to control their emotion.
All good bro.
No , that's a joke
The thing is, we've joked "King Indo" like a long time ago.
When we were drawn against Japan in the Asian cup, our people said things like "Japan, do you want to go home yourself or do you want us to send you home" to the point that Japanese media picked it up as a news. We know damn well we're gonna get cooked lmao
Pretty sure it just a meme, but knowing the average Indonesian, a lot of them may unironically believe it...
😅😅..indonesian peoples are kind..how can you talk about attitude?..no you just hater😅
The grassroots were destroyed by many factors:
- A rampage mafia practice by the FA board members, including a conflict of interest, bribed referees, etc.

Fyi
Terimakasih for reaction brother.mohon dukungannya supaya Indonesia bisa lolos ke piala dunia 2026🙏
Indonesia is a sleeping giant
This vid doesn't do justice to Indonesian football development.
Framing naturalization of Indonesian diaspora as costly? Go look at Indonesia's U17 and U20 and see what have they achieved, and without so many diaspora players at that.
Indonesia breaks the rule. Indonesia follows china. As long as he/she has Indonesia blood, what nationality he/she is, he/she is Indonesian.

Tapi bagaimana kalau orang tuanya orang negara negara lain ..apakah anaknya boleh membela negara itu?
Hahaha, 2024 this mindset still exist..the world is getting borderless and global, many countries do it for decades..Morocco, Australia, Turkey,Jamaica, Iraq, USA, Philippines etc have been doing this for decades for calling back their foreign born players..

@@h0212cp There is a difference between being a proper double national and being a guy who lived in Netherlands or Spain his entire life, with no pretense of having anything to do with Indonesia (because, seriously, who would), and having possibly never visited it until being discovered by a headhunting program by the Indonesian federation and getting a bag of cash. They weren't indonesian citizens and instead were granted citizenship with the sole purpose of playing for the national team. This is farcical and against the spirit of international football.
