This probably some of the best music on the planet
20+ Grammys. I’ve lost count. Pat Metheny is not just the finest guitarist on the planet, the PMG is the height of what music can be.
Legendary composer of music that will take you places you never thought possible
That album is absolute PURE MAGIC !!
This album, and the one that followed, Letter From Home, helped get me through some rough times.
@@brucecaldwell6701 I think that This is some kind of "Power" that Music ( ART in general) have to mvoe people...✌🏻
The First Circle. You will not be disappointed.

Metheny is a prodigy, started playing with big names from a young age and taught at the Berklee College of Music. Played with Jaco Pastorius, Paul Bley, Joni Mitchell etc etc. I was lucky enough to see him for the first time in ATL when I was like 6 or 7 years old. My very first concert before that was Chick Corea
You had such a lucky childhood. I only got into the PMG when I was in college, and sadly I've never gotten to see them in concert (RIP Lyle Mays). The Way Up came out when I graduated from College, and it was my first PMG purchase. I've since made up for lost time and perused through as much of the discography as possible
Jazz at its BEST !!!!!! 💥💥💥😘
I was lucky to see Pat Metheny Group in concert, I took my 16 year old daughter with me …….. the concert was intense !!!!! My daughter looked at me and couldn’t believe
Someone could play the guitar the way Pat does !!!’ INTENSE. Go see him, you will be
In heaven !!!!!!!!
Poor Dee, looked like it was tough for her to make it through this one. Pat is a guitar genius and a visionary in jazz, jazz fusion and world music, incorporating sounds from all over the world into his music. Peter Gabriel does the same thing. His live performances are unforgettable. Lyle Mays, his long time collaborator and pianist passed away a little over 2 years ago. 🙏 The Pat Metheny Group sound is not for everyone but repeated listens to his music will make you appreciate him, that and his 20 Grammy awards. 🎸❤️✌️
True
Utterly incapable of recognizing that every instrument (and vocal) is on a skill level very few will ever reach. Then there is the complexity of the actual composition. This is genius.
@@hoplite2247 well said
@@hoplite2247 the 'elevator music' comment said it all....
@@jazzfusioner9840- That was especially depressing to hear, yep.
This dude "gets it" - I can tell just watching his face.
Some people's brains just can't handle going on a long slow soundscape journey. Mine sure as hell can. This music comes from a time when more people used to listen to music alone, sitting in a chair with your eyes closed. This is why hifi was a more popular hobby in the 70's and 80's.
This is one of the all time great songs on an incredible album. You will never be the same after listening.
This song is GENIUS. Pat and Lyle are geniuses. Period.
Pat Metheny, both alone and especially in collaboration with Lyle Mays, will eventually be regarded as the foremost musical composer of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His imagination, elegance of composition, mastery of texture and timbre, exquisite taste, and nearly boundless range of musical influences is totally unparalleled in contemporary music. Pat Metheny is our living Da Vinci of music.

You have just scratched the surface of the world of Pat - jazz, fusion, world. But above all, he is a Jazz genius. Can’t go wrong with any of his stuff. For a change of pace, check out his collaboration with Ornette Coleman, “Song X”.
The best thing about this song are the changes and transitions. Especially if you've listened to it hundreds of times like I have. Anticipating the changes is what makes it so great. You know what's coming and you know where it's going. And you can't wait for it to get there.
Metheny and Mays painted in watercolors and pastels. To quote a character from the old Babylon 5 series - "A moment of perfect beauty". Always amazes me how this piece can be so calm and soothing, yet urgent at the same time.
You've not entered the Amazing World of Pat Matheny. Congratulations. Now you're next stop should be Here to Stay.
Simply Amazing
Pat is my favorite. I don't know anyone else who knows anything about him so it's great watching people on the Internet enjoy him. I've seen him in concert 13 times!
You might like to listen to Joni Mitchell Amelia Live. Metheny has a terrific guitar solo. Mitchell like Steely Dan was playing with great jazz players, and Amelia is a beautiful song.
See this track live in a theatre and your eyes will bleed with the groove.
Yeah Pat belongs to the jazz world, some fusion, Latin jazz, progressive. Thanks for this one Chod! He's a player....as is the band!
His stuff with Chet Atkins is a delight to listen to. I've seen him live several times and he never disappoints.
Doesn't matter. Anything by the Pat Metheny Group is going to be great
PAT METHENY is always my choice when I'm motoring down the Interstates out west with my wife, watching America slide by the windshield. Give a listen to "Slip Away", "Eighteen", "Phase Dance", "Facing West" - all great tunes for road trips. Somehow, the speedometer always magically reads 80 mph+ when a Metheny song comes on! Another group in the same vein that you guys might like is Acoustic Alchemy. "Reference Point", "Road Dogs", "Same Road, Same Reason", "Say Yeah"...... (somebody stop me!). Just check 'em out!
Indeed. And you are on point with Acoustic Alchemy. "Passion Play" is my personal favorite from that group
HUGE rabbit hole here, Chod
Pat is a jazz legend (pronounced Meth EE Nee)
He has quite the impressive pedigree
Has played with the Best of the best
FYI Paul Wertico on drums here
His new drummer,Antonio Sanchez is also a beast. Antonio got a Grammy for the Bird movie (Michael Keaton)
Pat' writing partner//bandmate/keyboardist Lyle Mays passed away a couple years ago. Most of the PMG songs were co-written by the duo
Some suggestions of his work
San Lorenzo
Are You Going With Me
James
First Circle
Every Day I thank You
Question & Answer
All the Things you Are (an old Standard he did. Listen to the Trio Live version. Killer!!)
Have You Heard
Chod, I saw him in 1981 and he was a Big musical inspiration since then
So much diverse musical output in his almost 50 year career
Comptemporary jazz (like this one)
Traditional jazz
Free Jazz (he did an album with Ornette Coleman)
Acoustic
Even had a somewhat crossover hit with David Bowie
And always always always has great drummers with him ;-)
Do your homework on him. Well worth the journey!

What you two need to realize is that you are listening to Greatness!!
Minuano is a wind that blows in Brazil. Pat Metheny went to my High School. Or more correctly, I went to his. He graduated in 73, I got there in 75.
But I did get to run into him once back in 79. I was making a delivery to his grandmother's place and he came walking in. She was so excited he had come to visit. Been following his career since then.
San Lorenzo is my favorite but this is my second favorite by Pat Matheny group! Rip Lyle Mays🌻 listen to your man relax stay in the moment and enjoy!✌️🤩
Wow, finally. So many great songs: “Are you going with Me” “Follow Me” “San Lorenzo” just to name a few. 👍🏻
Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays and the rest of the PMG are such stellar players. This is from one of my favourite albums of all time.
Pat always gets my attention. Nicely done. His amazing partner/pianist Lyle Mayes passed a few yrs ago, however his contributions to music in general was huge. Try anything from “American Garage” forward. It’s a remarkable catalog. 🤘😎 Shout out for this one.
Love 'American Garage'. Another favorite of mine 'As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls'.
What about the white album? San Lorenzo feels like going on a vacation
'I think it might be going in a jazz direction', sigh, dude. Open your ears, this is jazz all day long. Pat is a renowned jazz guitarist. Some of her early comments, I can't even comprehend.
It’s jazz. There are hundreds of jazz categories. I saw him open for Miles Davis on the Boston Common, so call it jazz.
RIP Lyle Mays....
Pat who? Ohhhhh. You mean that guy who has WON (not been nominated, WON) SEVENTEEN GRAMMYS?
I love Pink Floyd, Yes etc, etc. I REALLY LOVE Pat M, The Pat Metheny Group and every other incarnation.
I thought you mentioned being a Jazz Leaning guy?
The guy is Perennially listed in the top 5 greatest jazz guitarists of all time. Articles about him abound in every Jazz publication in existence. Come on Chod.
Please except this as good hearted ball busting. Get your shit together! Lol!
At 67, and child of the 70s, living a half hour train ride to NYC, I have been to hundreds of concerts. None more than Pat. 14 times in 5 different states (NY, NJ, PA, VA and FL). I've planned vacations around his concerts. He's not for everybody BUT if you are a TRUE music lover, it will be love at 3rd sight. That's because most of the compositions are too complex to fully get and appreciate at first listen. You know you that you love it but you're not yet sure exactly why.
Finally, I would suggest you listen to Pat for your own pleasure. He'll likely not be appreciated by the casual listeners.
PS Let your beloved know that Metheny has done numerous movie scores.
38 nominations, 20 wins :)
Muh- theeny
Paul Wertico is absolutely magical on drums in this song! It´s hard, HARD work!
I was a year old when this album was released and at the age of 12 fell in love with the Pat Metheny Group since.
LOL Dee's trying to not fall asleep!
Spent many a long hours in my room breaking down Pat (among others) trying to play close enough for a gig or catch a technique to improve. Just Love his stuff. Pat has played with most of the masters in the Jazz realm. I would consider him one of those people. Love the reaction guys and thanks for posting a Jazz reaction (overlooked by todays reactors in my opinion). As always stay safe and much love guys.
Two other songs on this album to check out are “Third Wind,” and “Last Train Home.” This was the start of Pat’s foray into Brazilian rhythms. The drummer is the great Paul Wertico, who played in the PMG for many years.
“Last Train Home” should be of great interest to a drummer.
Who's the Debbie Downer. Keep it solo, brother. Credit to keyboards, Lyle Mays and vocals, Pedro Azner. A masterpiece!
The middle section are mallets and Mays on synths and horn setting on grand piano
If you want to hear Metheny with lyrics, there was a period when he and some bass player named Jaco were backing up Joni Mitchell. Joni could attract some serious talent. Pat's had a long brilliant career. A catchy early work is "New Chatauqua" from the album of the same name.
Jaco Pastorius - Weather Report fame
Only Metheny song with lyrics was his collaboration with David Bowie for the movie soundtrack 'The Falcon and Snowman', which was the song 'This is Not America'
Interesting harmonic content, stellar playing, great atmospherics!! What's not to love?!
Pat M is comparable to a Mozart of the 21st century, the guy won many many many Emmys I struggle with the fact that is not known by musicians.
This album is really brilliant.
I saw Travels, First Circle, and SLT live. Amazing
Metheny and Mayes is a perfect match. This piece is definitely one of my favs…
His performance with Het Metropole Orchestra at North Sea Jazz Fest is a video worth seeing/hearing. "Are You Going With Me?" is just amazing. (Watch Sax and Trombones expressions behind him during his solo...so good.)
The first time I ever heard Pat Metheny was in a movie theater watching "The Falcon and the Snowman"...and hearing the theme song, "This is Not America."....I knew then I had to find out and get into this group's music...and Oboy, what a treasure trove I discovered!
Fell in love with Pat Metheny back in 1982 with his “off ramp” album!
If this music does not touch you, you are already dead
Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny collaborated to make some great music...rest in peace Lyle, a GENIUS. Classic, ARE YOU GOING WITH ME..one of my favs.
Had to comment twice! Lol I remember buying this on cassette and popping it in and wanting to take a long drive! And it’s kind of what I did with my cousin. We left the city and headed upstate NY! Great driving music! Also look at the album cover! It’s Brazilian samba inspired! God this band is so good! Pat is a guitar god! Paul wartico is on drums! He plays those symbols so subtly! Killer
The late Mark Ledford whistling.
This is the type of stuff I had suggested awhile back. Weather Report, Al DiMeola, John McClauglin, You'll eventually find it, you're on the path!
Pat Methany is awesome. Please do some Weather Report; how about Birdland?
Cool that you did this piece. I've been a Pat Metheny fan since 1981. Seen him in concert 4 times over the years. Actually got to talk with him briefly at one of them. I simply love his music. Your girl didn't seem to like it nearly as much as you but I couldn't take my eyes off of her. With respect sir, she is gorgeous. Thanks for the video.
This is straight jazz but with a very modern take. Pat Metheny was considered one of the leading guitarists of his time. He played for a while with Joni Mitchell when she was touring. He recorded on a label called ECM Records and anything on that label is worth a listen. Anyone who was anyone did records for ECM and to me they were the Blue Note of our time (70's to the present).
Modern jazz, fusion blend. It is a pure smooth sound that takes you to a dream ack Marketworld. Another legendary Fusion band with a higher profile sound is Weather Report with Wayne Shorter, Josef Zawinul, And the late great Jack Pastorius. Out of this world tunes as Birdland, a tribute to Charle Parker, Havana,And Black Market.
Great, young people have a lot of appreciation. Thank you for that. We can all be happy to have been able to experience Pat and Lyle in this century. There won't be anything better for a long time (or forever).
The live version of this song on the videoWe Live Here World Tour 1995 Japan, is great. The Band puts on a tremendous show.
I've never missed a Pat Metheny concert in the Bay Area, ever! Seeing the Pat Metheny Group live is something amazing, and not something to yawn at, for sure.Pat has used some of the greatest drummers in modern jazz music - Dan Gottlieb, Paul Wertico, Antonio Sanchez! He and Lyle Mays can go from atmospheric to straight ahead jazz, to rock influenced jazz. If you are ready, prepare yourself to go on a real musical journey. 20 different Grammy's in 10 different categories. Who does that? RIP Lyle!
I've seen him 13 times. I'm mad that I had to work the last time he came to town.
Welcome to the world of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays … their songbook is the best in jazz, it’s due respect to Chick, Herbie, etc …
Please do more Pat Metheny!!!!!!!
He had a ton of good songs!
What the heck is wrong with this girl?
Just pay attention! This is something beautiful. Would you go to a redwood grove, or the ocean, and complain about them not “doing” something?
For heaven’s sake, when I was only 10, it never bothered me a bit to lie on the floor for an hour, getting lost in my earphones, letting the drama of the music as it built at whatever pace it pleased.
It’s astonishing and sad to see the damage people have done to their own ability to just listen and let music happen.
Mon guitariste préféré, mais Méthény est plus qu'un simple guitariste, ne pas oublier Lyle Mays qui a énormément contribué à l'essor du Pat Méthény Group...
San Larenzo is my all time fav. jazz instrumental. They used to play Phaze Dance a lot during televised golf tournaments.
Now you get to peruse the discography of Pat Metheny and the PMG. Lots of wonderful gems whichever format he's playing in (Group, Trio, Quartet, Duet or even solo). He has very beautiful melancholic pieces, best of which is September 15th (in honour of Bill Evans). That would be a great piece for you to sample. And when you're ready for it, the PMG magnus opus is none other than "The Way Up".
Great reaction guys
Yep, a distinctive thing in Pat Metheny’s music is the frequent addition of wordless vocals to various instrumental melody lines.
Very cool and instantly recognizable effect. 🥰
I can’t believe you’ve never heard of Pat. And I’m jealous of the the amazing discoveries you’re going to make as you work through his discography. It won’t be all to your taste, but much of it will take you to places that music has never done before. Those tunes will stay with you forever.
Isn't it nice listenin to unpredictable music....refreshin isn't it!
Just subscribed specifically because you reacted to Pat Metheny. He has been nominated and won more grammy awards than most musicians...nominated 38 times and won 20. He has won grammys in 10 different categories, more than anyone else. A true musical genius.
The melody is pure genius. Its like a nursery rhyme on top of a very intense rhythm track. And a 6/8 latin groove to boot!
Jazz guitar and "world music" top tier genius mixing Jazz, Latin, and Latin fusion. All of his records are beautiful and will take you somewhere else! Active since 1974 he has three gold albums, twenty Grammys. and the only person to win Grammys in ten categories.
Amicalement Guy
Can somebody help? is the six eight in the title mean it is in 6/8 time?
I think I'd need indica to really get with the vibe of this tune, which is my normal mellow Jazz reaction. I guess I'm a blues/rocker til the day I ascend to a higher plane.
Pat Metheny, freaking legend!! Check out "American Garage" it will blow your mind!!
Song for Bilbao, watch the RUclips video to see the concert and every other Pat Metheny song is 🔥. Pat wrote several movie themes.
The rabbit hole is huge
Pat is now over 70 years old, and started when he was 16 in Kansas City…a true Jazz genius!
Listen to his 2021 release…From This Place…
Pat's not quite 70 yet. I believe he was born in 1954.
Pat is 68 …… exactly my age
Sorry for the wrong info on Pat’s age… in fact he and his music are timeless!
There is a lot of excellent Pat Metheny Group music. Pretty much every album and song the group recorded is good. You might want to check out the album "We Live Here."
I saw the PMG open a show years ago with this song. Imagine a large pool deck with about 1000 people watching them from across a hotel pool on a hot summer afternoon in Sacramento. They were as casually dressed for the environment. The sun and heat turned to dusk and the group kept playing, then the dusk turned to night but they kept playing. Late night still more. You could tell they wanted to be there and loved playing in such a casual spot. Finally after playing for hours a hours they had to stop and we had been given an experience I think even surprised them. Mays even smiled most of the time. One of the best days of my life due to and shared with The Pat Metheny Group. I bet even he still remembers that day. One of those days it all lined up. It's what we live for.
Great album and choice for the first of Pat's 'Brazilian Phase' of music ... but I think 'First Circle' is another level altogether. The live version on RUclips is great too.
It's good to catch the live performances of these tunes where you can actually see the musicians play.
Thank you for this reaction.
I've heard plenty of Metheny over the years ... never heard this one. Neat.
If you go down this rabbit hole please check out Simon Phillips band Protocol
You have to watch the video of Pat playing The Sound of Water on his Picasso guitar.
Take a listen to Last Train Home.
Welcome to the world of progressive jazz Chod! As a drummer I'm curious to know what you thought of the drummer/percussionist
How dare you yawn while the master is playing! 😉
We used to listen to this album when we were on tour so relaxing like being in musical heaven fantastic ❤❤❤❤
Pat and Lyle and colleagues are amongst the top Jazz - or whatever their music maybe called in the future - musicians at the last quarter of the 20th into the 21st century. Outstandig, beautiful, and very original and unique! They will be remembered like Miles Davis, Frank Zappa and the likes.
Such joy....i have listened to him a lot since 1977..imo a top 19 all time guitarist..Chod ,would love to see you guys react to the pat metheny group doing the song April Joy
Pat and Lyle together are masters of melody. Imagine writing this….
Omg Pat Metheny !!!!!! I love him !!
Min u ano. It’s pronounces just like that
This I believe is one of his best ….. My
Favorite actually !!!!!! 😘😘😘💥
Universel.
Great observations in this track. Definitely Pedro’s voice is an instrument all by itself. Didn’t find Pat Metheny Group till late in my life but when I did I never looked back! That music and time was special and rare. Pat is still making great music for all to enjoy!
This isn't Pedro...vocals are from Mark Ledford and David Blamires.
This is about my 5th time through watching you guys react to this song and one thing is SO clear……..guys are just better equipped to digest and appreciate this level of technical mastery. This is next level ear candy right here!
Keep watching Dirty Loops. Congratulacion from Spain.
Nice interpretation at the end. PMG music, each individual tine and the whole 40 years of Pat Metheny Group catalog is a musical story, a journey.
However, as much as this is PMG music, it is YOUR story!
Pat Metheny and the LATE GREAT Lyle Mays are two of my favorite Musicians of ALL TIME and I have some pretty serious greats I can put up there with anyone. I'm surprised you don't know Pat's Music and would seriously be surprised if you Dad wasn't aware of him. Peace and Blessings.
Two of my favorites from the movie Fandango are IT'S FOR YOU and FARMERS TRUST! Can't miss!😂
MIN- YOU- AH- NO, That's how it's pronounced, just thought I'd give you a little "heads up" on that. Beautiful tune from Pat. Check it out LIVE, it's incredible.
Check out Pat Metheny's Limelight with the late Gary Brooker on vocals. You won't be disappointed. Jim
