Night Vision - CLIMBING AT NIGHT

  • I wanted to try this out for a long time. After I posted my first Reel about climbing with a night vision device, people already commented about a mission in Call of Duty. But the mission was at daylight. So now how about climbing at night?
Doing room clearing and fast roping with night vision goggles has become a standard for SF and SOF. And modern nods like the binocular DTNVS allow a good depth perception for a lot of things. So now lets try rappelling and climbing on rock and ice.
At first I tried rappelling. When setting up the anchor and the rappel device, you need to focus on these things. So all objects in the distance will be not in focus. Then abseiling, I have set the focus on my feet. Then worked quite well. To find the right route to rappel, it can be useful to focus one tube to a further distance.
For climbing I at first tried ice climbing before I moved on rock. But for the video I switched the order, since I had more video material from the climbing on rock. There we used a small camera, that was directly mounted behind the night vision goggles. For climbing it is a good idea to focus at least one tube at the hands. On ice it was actually easier, since the focus for the tip of the ice tools is almost the same as the focus on the toes.
For filming I also used a digital night vision device from OneLeaf as well as a Pulsar Thermal Device.
The night vision device I am using:

And here a video to tactical gear, that you can use for rope related stuff:

Dude you're a hero for posting all these videos. Keep them coming! To silence my climbing gear i use duct tape on the contact points, it does a pretty good job.

      Thx.
I also tried tape. Sometimes it indeed works quite well. I also use the tape, that is made for improving the grip on ice tools.
But at least the carabiners, where the rope moves over, should be free of tape, in my opinion.
One of the loudest things is my alpine tube. I think there it only helps to pack it inside a bag, as long as it is not needed.

Absolutely amazing! This looks dope. I was also wondering if we well ever get a MYOG template for the rucksack you made on the takonta frame?

Hey man, I highly recommend checking out the ''Phokus'' adapter for NV for when you have to be aware of things at very close distances.
Also, may I ask why do you use green phosphor tubes? The small upgrade to white phosphor is unbelievably worth it. I mean, I'm pretty sure you already know this but WP helps a lot to see better details, other then putting less strain on the brain for this exact reson.
Anyways, thanks for the videos you put out.
    Greetings from Italy.

On the website in the description it says it's a demo-device.
And since the market for military grade NV for civilians is propably veeeery small I can totaly understand why the manufacturer isn't sending out top-of-the-line >15.000€ equipment.

Slab is the best for Nvg. Face climbing and cracks are tough. Def recommend a mat block optical focusing tool

Super video! Never seen anyone else do that. Just sad that usable NV’s are so expensive. Waiting for some manufacturer to commoditize them

also - wanted to say that I’ve learned so much from your videos and even replicated some of your rappelling setups. Thank you !

Lunox tries to drop the prices. At least they are less expensive than the act in black devices.

    Nice footage!
Which Pulsar is that and at what distance was it placed?
Regarding lowering the noise of equipment:
Shrink tubing or some sort of Flexseal. Has to be replaced frequently and doesn't work 100% but it's better than nothing.
What really works well is these little elastic bungee cloth thingys... Mostly found around the hooks of weapon slings to silence the sound of them against the weapon. No idea what they are called. And I would strongly recommend not using them on some sort of self closing safety equipment (wouldn't want the gate of a carabiner held open by one of them. Could be bad.)
But: they to work really well.

And thank you for the Tipp regarding lowering the noise. I also tried some things in the past. But indeed not that easy, if you want to keep carabiners safe.
I also once made small bags, that I pull over all loose hanging carabiners and gear.

How much more difficult would you imagine it would be with just a monocular?
