Man oh man! I'm surprised they went strato. I was really hoping they would stay with the old style. But that's the way things are going! So go with the flow and learn to improve it. I think if you can make it anything like the other stratos you've built it will be totally awesome!

Seems that most stratos they have hollow mufflers... that extra air into the top of piston must keep the emissions cleaner... only strato saw I have is makita/dolly 6100. Which is interesting with the reeds. It does like to rev but lacks the midrange. If you don't give it full beans, he kinda falls flat. Having said that, I got a muffler mod but stock and just about pulls full house 24, 3/8. Think the stock numbers are not bad and not got round to having look at porting yet . And I'm with you, Charlie. Prefer non stratos. Will be interesting in how this one turns out 👍

It's just like Harvey The Ironhorse says - sneak up on your numbers real slow, and your golden. That's my opinion, as a "performance fan."
I have a lot of experience ENJOYING ported & piped 2-stroke - and running lots of bone stock chain saws - just to be clear where I'm coming from.
    VERY - COOL - SAW.
I'm having fun watching. That's what subscibers do! Don't forget that.

Charles, back in the day of early hot rods we expatriated with ways of reducing friction in our pistons. One way I tried was knurling and then cutting to size our pistons. I built a 302 that was a pretty good runner with high rpm with ease, but I didn’t pursue it that long as I acquired a L 88 427 that really rocked my world. So moved that direction.
So, has anyone tried reducing piston wall friction in chainsaws? Just wondering if that may help in the smaller saws. I saw or read,, and I believe it was your pages, pistons with rings cutting in the piston sides to do the same thing ? Did that improve friction? Ease with higher rpm? Reduced heat ? Hoping this may bring back some older skills.
Ive wanted to ask you a question for quite some time; I have a few smaller echos(451. 400) anew 620 a 395, 661 c with only a days cutting on it that you could take in and port, etc and build me some good working saws ?Run in northern ca, elevation from sea level to 3000ft. Costal fir, redwood to pine in higher elevation. Hardwood throughout depending on project.
Big saws run up to 42” on stihl, and 54” on Husqvarna. All 3/8 chain. But also run shorter bars so need the rpm. Please let me know if you’re interested.
Love your open mind as far as how to meme more power .

I've done all sorts of piston mods back in the day of building sbc an BBC an I've done lota the same tricks to little engines pistons too

Nice little thingy, that saw! What's the bore and stroke size? I googled for half an hour and can't find those specifications, Echo advertises only displacement and power.

Does that saw use reeds for the fresh air feed for the strato. It looks eerily similar to the dolmar 6100 on the cylinder inlet.

Can’t wait to see this one, I have one and don’t really like it! That being said I do prefer it over a stock 490

Every Echo tool I ever had needed a minimum of 10 or 15 tanks through it, they build them tight, takes a while to get full power, my factory tunes where ok, but often a retune with the tachometer is needed after its run in. 501 is my go to small saw but this little 4310 interests me as low weight and vibes make long days easier.

If it was my saw i would start with very mild mods and do it in stages if i wanted some more out of it.
