Just wanted to say Quill, in my opinion you are one of the best gaming channels on youtube! Thank you for such great entertainment and for your time and effort for these videos and lets trys!
Such a great game. Although I disagree with your statement about Dragon Age Origins not living up to Boulders gate. DAorigins is probably the only game that can be considered the next gen of baulders gate type. Go for the eyes boo, GO FOR THE EYES!
Imoen and Minsc are my all time favorite NPCs. No other NPC in any other game can come close. And even Mass Effect have references to Minsc (and Boo) :)
Love these games. I bought them when they were new, and still play them to this day. I want to get the enhanced versions for the extra content. I put 100's of hours into BG2.. so much replay value.
BG is THE game that sets the standard for all Neverwinter Nights, Diablo, etc... that came after it. A "must own", even if the graphics are outdated by today's standards.
The problem with multiplayer in Baldur's Gate is what I like to call the Protagonist syndrome, player 1 will always be in total control leaving your buddies as glorified henchmen with human controls of their combat and that is it. They can't do shit and if player 1 dies you have to reload, where if player 2 dies the game continues on and player 1 can either resurrect him or kick him out of party giving place for another character controlled by player 2. Also the reliance on pausing in combat gets messy in multiplayer. It is a great game in singleplayer though :) And you can perfectly play it without Minsc ;P
Man, would really love to play this with you but guess that won't happen. ^^ Still, I really had a blast playing BG 1 and 2 years ago - especially 2 (best villain ever). The ridiculous cd-casing from BG 1, which is about 1m long when you fully extend it, is still sitting right next to me on the cd shelf. I just love Minsks random occasional comments and I really enjoyed having Edwin around for his "special" quest. ^^ Ah, good times... So much fun
Awsome game ! I finished it long time ago with its extension, and when you play the wizard it is quiet difficult but powerful at the end. The NPCs and background storie is so deep...
I’ve never heard you say “just the pits” before, but it perfectly describes the experience of being on a dial-up 56k modem. though, at the time, it felt like being a GOD compared to 28.8....
600x800.. those were the days. BG I and II (together with Fallout I & II) are the games I've installed on every PC I've owned. Love them. Funny thing is, I can't remember what made me buy BG I back in '98.
40 to 60 hrs game-time?!? Months, man. months. Best part was pretending to be the cat. "I'm a stray. Go back to sleep." No one who ever played BG can avoid flinching when someone says "Heya!" Also. . Melee rules the game?!? RANGED ruled BG and IWD. Absolutely RULED. BTW, in BG II, don't cheat on ANYTHING regarding the Thieves' Guild, or Arkanis Gath becomes an unbeatable force of destruction w/a mad-on for your skull.
I didnt play BG back in the day but i did play fallout, so i know how legendarily good it must be, but for some reason i cant get around to playing it myself. THEREFORE quill you must LP both games completely!
Would really like to see you do this one as a Let's Play... I remember playing this one (first one) way back... didnt get very far into the game.. my computer fried about then (unrelated) and then my brother borrowed my game and never got it back.... Have always liked the play style and would love to see YOU do this one... thanks for the memories ^___^
About the old game and the resolution. You had a great mod for that. And with the mods the game has a lot of missing stuff as well. It is much cheaper to buy the old version on gog and then follow the mod guide there and you get a cheaper game that offers a lot of the missing content, fixes a lot of bugs and supports wide screen as well (thanks to the well developed engine that is capible of that even years after release). If you already own the old version just go to gog and browse for the game, you will find a link to the mods you need and then get to play it on modern computers on 1920x1080 if you want, with all the missing content.
Did you ever play Planescape: Torment? Absolute masterpiece. The ruleset wasn't quite as deep as Baldur's Gate 2 but the characters and writing were arguably far better.
I'm looking forward to seeing this, and for me it is a nostalgia trip. I've already finished it with an evil rogue (gosh, I forgot how brutal the reputation mechanics can be...) but I'd love to see how this would pan out. (Oh, and remember that your dreams change a bit depending on your reputation ^^) I usually don't like to add links to other games in comments, but, should anyone fancy a roleplaying LP of this, try searching for a 'Lilly Black' :)
played both games 10+ yrs ago. replaying bg2 right now unaware of bg2ee. hopeful can import saved games. minsc, jaheira, keldorn, aerie(ehh), yoshimo(for now). one of the all time greats. fantastic it still has legs.
I owned baldurs gate (the original) and loved it, found it recently on amazon for about $12.00 and bought the 4 cd set, unfortunately, is very slow on windows 8.1 no matter the mode. After seeing this review will buy the enhanced edition. thanks
loved this video first game/s I loved playing can't wait for a lets play if you do one :) Beamdog forums/support is horrible to navigate I am from the UK and the site asks to pay in dollars, will the purchases and client support work for the UK or should i stick to steam or GOG?
I loved these games when I was younger. Also check out the Icewind Dale series for similar mechanics. The stories are not as good unfortunately but still fun. Also... "Me wife's been gettin' prickley on me eyes"
You came off as a bit too nostalgic...not that I'm complaining, but your sounding fanboyish which is fine! All I care about is that you gave credit to Imoen (my favorite NPC for some reason) I played BG a little bit, but I never finished it.
Sounds like they got most of the bugs out of this? I was holding off buying it because of all the commentary on bugs, and I was worried they'd never fix them.
I fucking love Baldur's Gate. It's the very first game i ever played (as a 5 year old lol) and BG2 is my favourite game *ever*. I hope you'll do a playthrough one day. It will be awesome. (preferably with a Neutral PC + a good/evil party mix. they're really fun.) Funny that you mention Minsc though. I love him, obv, but I also consider him one of the most overrated game characters ever. He's so one-note :( His lack of story and character depth (compared to the others) compells me to never take him in my party in BG2 :( But keep on fighting the good fight!!! your taste in games in almost *impeccable*.
Looks vintage, I know it was great game, but still I prefer Skyrim's fabulous graphics, female hot and sexy character, dagger in the right hand and full stealth mode on.
I got this a couple years ago and played it off and on, but then I started playing my PC through my TV and the resolution for this game will not work on the TV. And I was very sad.
Quill's attention span is, by his own admission, somewhat on the short side. Given the amount of time it would take, I find it unlikely that he will do a LP for BG. Too bad. Also, Quill, dexterity 6? Did I see that right? How on Earth did that happen?
"Also, Quill, dexterity 6? Did I see that right?" Very, very early in the game you get gauntlets that set your Dex to 18. You get them from the first encounter in the Gnoll Stronghold.
Sadly, it seems that they didn't correct the BIGGEST problem in the Game.. That the party is limited to 6 characters, even though there is room in the right-hand column for seven. It is not that you need 7 for combat, but that accommodates far more dialog pairs, and would ensure much more character development of all 7 characters. Technically, there is even room for 8. Imagine how much dialog would be happening then! It seems they could have corrected this easily, but they did not. That is the one thing that would make me buy EE and play the game all over again.
Thanks for the overview, quill18, but if I might offer some constructive criticism, please don't speak so fast. The rule of thumb I've always used when public speaking is to choose a pace that seems slow, and then slow it down a little more.
That is quite literally the opposite of what I've found to work best both in real life and for RUclips. By speaking quickly you can keep people focused and engaged, preventing their minds from wandering. It's worked for me so far.
It's so strange how D&D related stuff seems so difficult to understands, since I'm of the nwer generation, and am still amazed by it and would love to know more about that kind of RPG. I have a thing for fantasy and RP, but no way ti satisfy it...
If you really want to try actual roleplaying, I suggest looking into groups that play Paper & Pencil RPGs over Skype, using programs for dicerolling and illustrations.
Great video, I’m stalking you lol. I’m starting a gaming channel doing let’s try for the very first time as a noob. I have a ton of games. Any tips or advice? Thanks in advance and I subbed to your channel!! Cheers!
tried it, couldnt figure out how the controls worked. I can move and interact fine, but for some reason in combat the characters don't do what I ask them to, and the mage's spells are not described very well as to what they do. I might reinstall after seeing this vid, perhaps figure out what I did wrong, but I still think nostalgia will make me prefer the original Divine Divinity over these or the Diablo games
Downsides of Enhanced Edition - Less modding possible. We're still waiting for Beamdog to let us mod race restrictions so that anyone can be anything. It's currently too hardcoded for anyone to touch - in the Enhanced Edition (The older releases do it just fine)
40 hrs ppft! BG1 is 100 hours + 15 for tales of the sword coast. BG2 + ToB is longer than that. Biggest question: what have they done about the Imoen level problem? Without giving too much way, in BG2 you can either retrieve her early or late. If early, her level is OK but it's hard to do. If late it's almost impossible to avoid her being 3/4 levels behind you because the algorithm doesn't work well with multi-class party members (like Jahiera) which is a pity 'cos she's really important for the story. Plus she has the immortal line: "Minsc, I want a hamster!" in ToB. Buy, load, enjoy.
Um sorry to say but you are giving out wrong information Quill! the enhanced edition will not play on any intel intergrated graphics cards meaning not all "modern" computers will play it, a hell of a lot of people (including me) purchased the enhaced edition and basically got robed because they wont patch because of "difficulties" with intel. I cant even play it with out major lag/freezing or without a lot of work forcing updates on your graphics card which i would not do because without prior knowledge of what you are doing can screw your card up............:( BTW boo is better than minsc :)
a) Getting "robbed" because your computer doesn't meet the system requirements? b) They have added support for integrated Intel chipsets as of patch 1.2.
moleahjobe Idjit. If you're going to make a complaint like that, at least bother to read up and do your research. The lack of Intel support is because of the change of graphics engine - They had to move away from the ancient rendering engine that runs on everything (and then some). This caused some issues with Intel cards initially - but they have long since fixed these issues.
Is it jsut me or...Did it unsub me from you Quill yet i'm getting videos from you. And i swear i didn't Unsub...Yet it's showing me your uploaded videos and i can resub. Agh this is just painful now.

"Baldur's Gate" aaaaand subscribed.
"A certain drow..." Hahaha, well done, Quill. Please do a LP! Such a fantastic game.
Love these games. I bought them when they were new, and still play them to this day. I want to get the enhanced versions for the extra content. I put 100's of hours into BG2.. so much replay value.
Minsc: Ahh... We are all heroes; you and Boo and I. Hamsters and rangers everywhere, rejoice!
BG is THE game that sets the standard for all Neverwinter Nights, Diablo, etc... that came after it.
A "must own", even if the graphics are outdated by today's standards.
Baulder's Gate is the purest representation of D&D in a video game. A classic and it WILL survive the ages.
It is a great game in singleplayer though :)

Let's Try is my favourite series on this channel
Easily spent 200 hours on BG II alone. Looking forward to watching you play this
YES YES YES! Please do an LP I would LOVE it!
Jaheira actually spawned my hated for Druids in any game ever. I like Khalid, but he's not worth lugging around that whiny hippy.
I’ve never heard you say “just the pits” before, but it perfectly describes the experience of being on a dial-up 56k modem. though, at the time, it felt like being a GOD compared to 28.8....

One of my favourite RPGS.along with the Super Robot Wars series and Elder Scrolls.

I had Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Dark alliance 2 for my PS2 and still play them from time to time, thow I do wish I had that Baldur's Gate.
loved this video first game/s I loved playing can't wait for a lets play if you do one :) Beamdog forums/support is horrible to navigate I am from the UK and the site asks to pay in dollars, will the purchases and client support work for the UK or should i stick to steam or GOG?

Go for the eyes Boo, GO FOR THE EYES!! RrraaaAAGHGHH!!! lolol ahh Minsc
Best RPG ever! Only problem with Baldur's Gate is that it spoiled me when it came to other PC games and I am now really picky
Boo is back and he brought Minsc!!!
wow does this bring back a lot of fond memories!!. Thanks!
You came off as a bit too nostalgic...not that I'm complaining, but your sounding fanboyish which is fine! All I care about is that you gave credit to Imoen (my favorite NPC for some reason) I played BG a little bit, but I never finished it.
Is there a possibility we can see you play with a party of a few players?
I think this would be extremly entertaining.
This game has my introduction to D&D... so nostalgic....
I think I may have actually started with 3rd edition tabletop, then got the Baldur's Gate games.
If you like this game so much, let's see a let's play of it
My all time favorite was dungeon siege 1. my first PC game.
Still 2 of the best games ever to this day. The trifecta if you add Torment.
Hope you do a "Lets play" of the character you create!
Sounds like they got most of the bugs out of this? I was holding off buying it because of all the commentary on bugs, and I was worried they'd never fix them.
I agree that they are among the pinnacle of pc rpgs, but I think the absolute pinnacle was Planescape: Torment.
I fucking love Baldur's Gate. It's the very first game i ever played (as a 5 year old lol) and BG2 is my favourite game *ever*. I hope you'll do a playthrough one day. It will be awesome. (preferably with a Neutral PC + a good/evil party mix. they're really fun.)

But keep on fighting the good fight!!! your taste in games in almost *impeccable*.
Should do game series of these games if you have the time!.
I hope you're gonna film your playthrough.
Please do a playthrough video series of BG 1&2
Baldur's Gate LP needs to happen :D
Looks vintage, I know it was great game, but still I prefer Skyrim's fabulous graphics, female hot and sexy character, dagger in the right hand and full stealth mode on.
And here comes the obligatory LP requests of a let's try...
This would be a great game to pair up with Briarstone over a few drinks...
I got this a couple years ago and played it off and on, but then I started playing my PC through my TV and the resolution for this game will not work on the TV. And I was very sad.

It seems they could have corrected this easily, but they did not.
That is the one thing that would make me buy EE and play the game all over again.
Minsc and Boo are ready to take the boot to the black butt of evil!
How did you make BGEE move so slow? In my game everything moves so fast like turbo or something.
How do you get that loot bar above the text box at 11:28? That would save me so much time.
This is more a pitch to someone who has never played BG 1+2 before, rather than a pitch to a familiar old-timer on why he should buy EE..
Perhaps it has to do with the audience. My mind doesn't tend to wander, so that might explain why I see it differently.
The first game came out in.... 1998, I think? And the second in 2000?
Oh my god, Bauldur's Gate? Is this real life? I remember playing this as a kid...
Do you have a BG2 play through?
Have you seen neverwinter night it is also like dungens and dragons.
It's so strange how D&D related stuff seems so difficult to understands, since I'm of the nwer generation, and am still amazed by it and would love to know more about that kind of RPG. I have a thing for fantasy and RP, but no way ti satisfy it...

It's like Neverwinter nights in 2D.
Downsides of Enhanced Edition - Less modding possible.

I cant even play it with out major lag/freezing or without a lot of work forcing updates on your graphics card which i would not do because without prior knowledge of what you are doing can screw your card up............:( BTW boo is better than minsc :)
lol i just downloaded 1.2 and they have sorted the running issues for me ( all be it almost a year later ) so scrap the huge whine i had X0
a) Getting "robbed" because your computer doesn't meet the system requirements?
b) They have added support for integrated Intel chipsets as of patch 1.2.
moleahjobe Idjit. If you're going to make a complaint like that, at least bother to read up and do your research. The lack of Intel support is because of the change of graphics engine - They had to move away from the ancient rendering engine that runs on everything (and then some). This caused some issues with Intel cards initially - but they have long since fixed these issues.
plz do more Master of Orion 2, pllzzzz

All these WRPG kiddies who never heard of games such as Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy in the comment section.
