- What IS the Story in Balamory?
Richard tells a story of a terrifying prediction made by an Armenian fortune teller and is needlessly insulting to a dead broadcaster before introducing this week's guest, Miles Jupp. Although Jupp has appeared in films with George Clooney and Jon Stewart and won plaudits for his stage and TV work, Richard is keen to talk to him about the children's television show, Balamory, and NOTHING ELSE.
The audience do not share the host's fascination with this lazily acted, repetitive show for pre-schoolers, but Herring's view is clouded by watching it in a fun of alcoholic despair, so it made him question the very nature of being. Don't worry, the Balamory part only lasts about 25 minutes, so there's still at least an hour of chat about divinity, the Harry Potter franchise, tea tasting and fly fishing, Miles' suspiciously late booking for the podcast and a bizarre phobia of lettuce. You'll also find out some of the good things that terrorists have said and done and witness Richard losing the ability to speak and the will to live as his half-marathon exhaustion finally overcomes him. At least he's not an Imp Pervert.

I enjoy Miles Jupp in everything i see him in. An intoxicating mixture of deadpan sarcasm and fulsome, generous laughter. Surprising i hadn’t stumbled across this before.
Miles mentioning the American TV show with Kelsey Grammer reminded me of when I had begun to work with a fellow and in an attempt to get to know him I asked, "Do you enjoy British Comedy?" He answered, "Sure, I like Fraser."
Why has Richard Ayoade not made an appearance on this show yet.. he would be brilliant!

Jupp's acting was superb in the Scottish comedy "Gary: Tank Commander", but I have to say the funniest thing I ever heard from Miles was on an episode of Cats Does Countdown. He challenges Sean to bet on something for the round.. Sean tells him; "Tell you what, I won't spit on you when we're having sex tonight." Quick as a flash Miles retorts: "Good luck trying it without a spit." 😂
Sean and Miles were epic whenever they were on together.
I like that you separate the opening theme and the intro. There's something oddly compelling about that theme.

Balamory is the best thing he has ever done. I didn't even realise Miles was Archie until years later.

Love Miles, especially his laugh, and as a longtime fan of these I liked these old marathons- Richard keeps it tighter now, probably for his own sanity, but lots of weird stuff comes up in these old ones. I would watch CSI:Kilmarnock. Thanks to RH.

I think that Dawkins is right in everything he says and I have sympathy with Mile's point that he could say it more quietly. Overall, Dawkins is 100,000x less offensive than what we typically hear from committed xians!

42:08 The late Christopher Hitchens might be described as a "professional atheist". He wrote the book "God is Not Great". The subtitle of this book is "How Religion Poisons Everything". How very true. We should be truly grateful for people like Hitchens for explaining clearly and articulately why this is so and for opposing it. Miles and his devout Catholic wife should watch Hitchens and fellow professional atheist Stephen Fry take the Catholic Church to task at the Intelligence Squared debate in October 2009*. We need professional antitheists to shake people like Jupp out of his lazy and frankly ridiculous belief in a bunch of bronze-age middle-eastern myths and legends. Jupp should perhaps spend more time with fellow funny men Sean Lock, Jimmy Carr, Dara O'Briain, Marcus Brigstocke, John Cleese, Ricky Gervais, Billy Connolly, Andy Hamilton, Jeremy Hardy, Eddie Izzard, Dylan Moran, Arthur Smith, Tim Minchin, Stewart Lee, Dom Joly, Ben Elton etc., etc., who are among the many comedians who are avowed atheists. As is Richard Herring.

Considering that Al Jazeera is the propaganda arm of the Qatari crown, one of the leading states sponsors of terror in the world, it is not far off...
Riley Roe Al Jazeera is run by Qatar. In 2010 Qatar gave $1.2m to AQ's fundraiser in Yemen, and it was a member of the Qatari royal family who tipped off the mastermind of 9/11 to help him evade capture. I think it was a fair question.

There's nothing to stop rational, entirely non-spiritual people doing good deeds, caring for the sick, helping those with mental problems, and comforting those in distress. No need for any religious baggage; it's an entirely human concern and nothing to do with prayers, books, buildings or whatever denomination of magic beans you've been raised on.
Loathing 'professional atheists' like Dawkins is jolly comforting for people with Miles's devout religious background, but it's essentially the coward's way out. It's sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting, "Nah, nah, nah! I can't hear you!"
Dawkins and his ilk are simply interested in discovering the truth. Objective truth. The kind that exists whether or not anyone or anything's there to contemplate it. The kind that existed before books or prophets or priests showed up.
The kind that doesn't prevent people from giving aid or education or doing any of the essential loving, caring, human things mentioned above depending on whether or not the recipients are prepared to observe a specific set of beliefs.
Dawkins doesn't want to stop good people being good people; he just wants to do away with any supernatural trappings and what they demand in terms of obedience, indoctrination and control.
There's no demand that people in need attend church, sing hymns, pray forty times a day, consume human blood and flesh or go out into the world and persuade others to share their beliefs.
There's no price to their charity work. Help and understanding is given freely, without any 'angle'. Why's that so wrong, Miles? Because your parents told you so?
Professional atheists aren't hiding behind ancient superstitions. They're rational enough to realise that the myths and stories circulated thousands of years ago by people who had no other way of understanding how 'life, the universe, and everything' worked, are not an essential (or even helpful) part of being human.
Miles hates Dawkins and other rationalists because they have no place in their lives for faith, religion, or belief. He wants them to shut up and stop spoiling his party. And yet... he doesn't believe in the invisible thought-control rays that one of the patients he once counselled in a psychiatric ward did.
Miles doesn't believe in fairies, either.
He doesn't believe in Native American spirit guides. Or Zeus. Or Apollo. Or the mystical powers of the sacred bulls of ancient Greece. Or any of the Hindu gods. Or Damballa. Or the magic flying horse-creature that took the leader of another major world faith up to paradise. Or the made-up sci-fi musings that the followers of a certain Mr Hubbard believe.
Dawkins just wants to understand everything without clothing that understanding in superstition. What it comes down to is: if some freakish phenomenon wiped out all of mankind's knowledge, memories, buildings and artefacts tomorrow, when the human race began to rebuild civilisation not one of today's religions would have survived.
No books, no holy relics, no buildings, no inherited traditions, no observances, no artefacts, no faith. No miracles, no stories, no guilt, and no gods.
Most importantly: no science.
After all, today's world is full of dead religions and half-forgotten faiths. Thousands of them. How did all their various immortal, omnipotent gods allow that to happen?
So people would have to make up new stories to explain their predicament. I'm betting they'd start out with a Flat Earth.
But despite their best efforts to hide from reality, in time all of the logic, the facts, the science and the understanding would be rediscovered because it's real; it exists and persists whether or not there's anyone around to appreciate it.
Waterfalls don't vanish if you fail to circumcise boys or sacrifice goats. Not eating shellfish is nice for lobsters, but it won't stop your daughter catching smallpox or prevent lightning from striking the village's biggest walnut tree. The Sun won't ever be rolled across the sky by a scarab beetle.
And Richard Dawkins will be gone one day, but the persistent genes he wrote about will continue to thrive and survive long after his books have been burned.
Unlike the stories in the world's holy books. Because they were all made up, not discovered.
So kindly toddle off back to Balamory, Miles. Leave facts and truth to the grown-ups and stick to fantasy - it's what you were programmed to do best.
