    I think it's worth adding, for anyone who's going to get mamiya 6 or 7, keep in mind that, you have to baby them and be gentle with them, they are not leica, especially with the film lever

    Max,
    Thanks for a wonderful review of this camera. I have been using this for about 18 months and it has become my go to camera for landscapes. It traveled with me to Alaska, Iceland and Ladakh this year.
    The images are tack sharp, the exposure/metering is spot on and I usually find that most of my photos from this camera/lens combo are crisp and bright.
    I would recommend this to anyone who wants to do serious medium format landscapes - super light and is a great addition for hybrid shooting.
    The battery for internals lasts about six months, so it is prudent to just have one in the bag anytime.
    Problems: it breaks way too often in extreme cold weather, especially the wonder mechanism. I have two bodies and they both have the same problem. It can add up in terms of expenses for repairs.
    I would love to see what you and your friends do with this over the course of your ownership.
    As always great and perfect review - presented hype free, with so much civility.

    Just a note, the light meter is actually inside the viewfinder! They are definitely biased towards the highlights and I was also getting underexposure at first. After I set my exposure comp to +1 it's now dead on even for slide film. Another tip is since the meter is in the VF, if the sun is really harsh and at a high angle I use my left hand to shade the viewfinder when taking a reading for a shot with a lot of sky. Depending on the lighting conditions it'll drop a stop or more. The Mamiya 7 has the same setup but since it's a spot meter it doesn't affect it as much I guess.
    Great review btw and I'm happy to see another video!

      Thanks so much for your helpful comment and piece of advice. I really appreciate it. Sorry for not mentioning that the light meter is inside the viewfinder. I should have done that. :)

    Always highly instructional. I envy you for the locations you get to shoot and envy Jules for his Mamiya 6MF, which seems to be the ultimate film camera. I adore you videos. Keep them coming!

      Thanks for your kind feedback, Diane. We actually have to scout and then drive to these locations to shoot the videos as well. It often looks much easier than it is in the background. ;) But of course you are right, we do have access to quite some nice locations here. We'll definitely have more videos coming next year. :)

    This was my camera for the decade of the 1990s, with the 50mm f/4 lens. I shot Ilford XP-2 film and printed on Oriental Seagull FB Double weight paper using a Saunders enlarger outfitted with an El Nikkor lens. Heaven and bliss ever part of that process, most especially the camera.
    I ended up self publishing a book, At the Beach, which was a several year exploration of the California beach scene.
    It’s a fantastic camera with amazing optics, as you say. The price is justified by the camera’s build quality, features, responsiveness, and durability. The lenses are so sharp and perfectly balance with the body.
    Anyone looking to do MF would do well to look into this camera.

    Hey Max, thx for this lovely portrait of a wonderous camera. This one and the X-Pan are very high on my wishlist. But as I don't have any spare kidneys... (Steve G haha), I'll have to wait for my piggy bank to fill up. I kinda liked the 'underexposed' Rollei film. It created a special atmosphere. The pano adapter is a charm !! Happy holidays to you and your little team and also the families !!

    I very much regret having sold my Mamiya 6 again in their late 90s, I would like to have it back. I am also very satisfied with my Rollei SL66, but the Mamiya 6 is so incredibly compact and, above all, quiet. As nice as a purely mechanical camera is, I use different ones, sometimes the electronics are also useful. It's not clear to me why the Mamiya 6 is so expensive used today, the demand seems to be high.

    The difference between an eye level camera like the Mamiya 6 and my 1960s Rollei TLR in use is that when you view at waist level it makes you more objective with composing. I use a separate German Sixtomat selenium meter from the 1950s which still works perfectly.

      The main difference is the format ie both take 120 film but one shoots a 6x6 image and the other 6x7. This means obviously that the 7 is a tad bigger but other than that the differences are very minor and the cameras look very similar. You have more choices of lenses with the 7 with a 43mm and 210mm lens available (both of which require an external finder which is a bit of a hassle to use and carry), and the light meter on the 7 is a spot meter rather than a taking an average reading type meter with the 6. Last time I looked the 6 was considerably cheaper than the 7 on ebay but don't take my word on this. There's a later 7ii model also which has a couple of very minor changes but essentially is the same camera as the 7.

    Superb camera, I rank it as the best camera I have used, (with just two lenses, 50 & 75), BUT it has a serious weakness, the film advance gearing!!, repaired several times with donor cameras and makeshift gears but to no avail, now sold to a collector! (no spares available, here in Aust.) Now 'shooting' with C220 TLR. ☹.

  • @iNerdier
    @iNerdier 4 года назад

    I own a 6MF and I feel I have to clarify, the light meter on this camera is not through the lens, it actually measures through the viewfinder. The problem with this is if you are shooting into the light it is often incorrect. I have lost quite a few frames to this and I would suggest on sunny days using a separate meter, especially if you are shooting slide film.

    Check out the predecessor of the Mamiya 6....The Mamiya Press Super 23 with the great 100mm F2.8 and the 50mm F6,3 wide angle using the large 6x9 back. Heavy but gives amazing transparencies. The lenses for the Press and the Mamiya 6 are outstanding.

    Schöne Folge. Ich nutze die Mamiya 6 sehr gerne, sie hat jedoch einen entscheidenden Nachteil gegenüber dem Hasselbladsystem: keine wechselbaren Magazine. Gerade auf Reisen habe ich mir des öfteren gewünscht einen anderen Film zu verwenden, weil er entweder von der Empfindlichkeit her oder der Art nicht optimal war, geschweige denn wenn man strickt nach dem Zonensystem arbeitet und unterschiedliche Kontrastsituationen auf mehrere Magazine verteilt. Trotzdem verzichten möchte ich auf die Mamiya nicht..

    Tolles review. Die Mamiya 6 ist die fast perfekte Reisekamera für gehobene Ansprüche. Die Naheinstellgrenze stört nur manchmal und so gut die Objektive sind, sind sie auch nichts besonderes in sachen Brennweite und Blende. Für mich die perfekte Ergänzung. Ich würde es nur nicht als einziges System haben wollen.

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your comment. Jules purchased the camera here in Germany from an aging photographer. As mentioned in the video, the lenses live up to Hasselblad quality or (according to some) even outperform it. I have an old video up where I talk about my favorite films for shooting analog portraits which focuses exclusively on 120 films. These days, I prefer shooting Ilford HP5+ and Kodak Portra 400 the most. Two classics.

    Max, love your videos. This one is almost perfect. Nevertheless, a couple things have prevented it: The idea that one can underexpose a film and somehow "make up" for (lost shadow detail) in scanning. Also, one should alway remove the entire band of paper from around a roll of 120 film before loading it. Lastly ... wear a hat in the cold! Signed, Mother

    Very interesting review of this medium format Camera. Can I make a couple of observations though. First, you need to project your voice a bit more. It tends towards a dull monotone, so try adding a little more emphasis to your sentences. Second, the black cushion to your left was very distracting, grey would have been less so. Even better would have been picture in picture when describing aspects of the camera such as: The viewfinder tramlines for example. Anyway, minor niggles apart a very useful review.

    Thank you Jules; some very nice photos here, especially with the black and white. I was lucky enough to find a Mamiya 6 in 2012 in Japan, and have been using it since then. I mostly shoot Ektar 100 with it. As you said, it is great for traveling. I generally carry only the 50mm lens with me, so that i can travel light. You can see some of the scanned negatives here: sandykumar.com Thanks again!
