Oversteer is better because you don’t see the tree that kills you
Themadtaxi ? You can just lift off oversteer in a FWD car if you start understeering and even RWD cars can understeer if you push them too hard in a corner...
cybersonic 93 it’s a Top Gear quote
Themadtaxi ? Ok but still...
Better oversteer than understeer why? Cuz you can still control it than understeer. So yea rwd is better.
@@Themadtaxi Actually comes from Walter Röhrl, TopGear just changed it a bit.
To drift or not to drift, that is the question
What is this "not to drift" you speak of?
Well drifting in a fwd car isn't really as easy as it would be for a rwd car
Exactly.
Im Nakazato, and i have never heard of to drift
drifthunterFIN I know, you dont have to be "that" guy ;)
NWD! How about pushing your car?
You bought an Audi right? Should have got that AA membership...
Neutral
Flintstones have been doing that for years
How about 1WD ( 1 wheel drive)
legostar55 its called a motorcycle or an open diff
Obviously RWD is more popular, but some great cars are FWD, so there is no real reason to bash on it.
Zombie Head I meant more popular by the fact some of the most hyped up and loved cars are RWD. But yes, desired would probably fit the bill better.
What if youre completely wrong
Burak Muhammetoğlu Then I'm wrong. It's just my opinion.
mayo gaming no you state a wrong fact, rwd is less popular for fucks sake did you even watched the video it is %12 vs %54
Burak Muhammetoğlu I did watch the video it's my opinion fucking hell.
FWD = perfect for Hot hatches
RWD = perfect for Sports coupes
You guys stfu, go out, and have fun with your own car instead of bashing each others on youtube comment section...
Funny how half of them don't even have cars...
iHeart GT86 {KatyCat} I think awd is better for hot hatches
Is it perfect for hatches? Civic type R did it well but honestly a 1er looks much more fun and the handling is superb, this is how the hatch should be built - RWD or AWD. Even regular versions of Audi A3 quattro and BMW 1 series feel like hot hatches with proper engines or remapped diesels
Doesn't matter FWD or RWD. As long as it's not that hideous Nissan Juke.
A true petrol-head when you’re young and inexperienced you’ll choose fwd. as you get older and wiser you’ll find out that RWD IS THE ONLY WAY. So there you have it
Rear engined fwd car. Sounds crazy enough?
can't think of any reason for that to exist... maybe thats why it doesnt :D
On acceleration80% weight on the rear wheels. But the front wheels are powered. Sounds like fun :D
I wonder how a mid engine fwd car would handle. Could maybe be really fast through tight corners
to me that just sounds like miles of understeer
FWD has enough trouble getting the power down with all the weight over the wheels, once you remove that weight I wouldn't think it would be such a pleasant experience. It also goes against the whole principle of an FWD car which is to be lighter and less complicated than an AWD or RWD car. Having a rear engined FWD car would be just as complex and heavier as a RWD setup.
Delorean is a rear mid engine FWD car.... Probably the only FWD I would admire
I'll stick to my *no-wheel drive* cus I'm poor
Great
Not bad
YES, I DO PREFER TAILING OUT IN A CLOUD OF SMOKE
My son, now you are a man.
What does this even mean?
I'll tell you when you're older kid
My man
I prefer RWD bc its more fun to drive most of the time but I also love FWD bc **weight** reduction bro, and I love AWD bc RALLYY
But bro there are rwd on rally
RWD for drift
FWD for fast hatchback
AWD for Subies and Evos
A true petrol-head you do realize a big reason why Lancia won was because they were really good at cheating, and they got lucky and had an amazing driver. Almost every race they found a way to cheat a little.
RUclipsDemonitization Team SUBIENATION
Imelda Agnas yes I do know that but most rally cars of today are AWD
FWD, RWD or AWD? Too mainstream get LWD (Left wheel drive)
That sounds like something Citroen would come up with!
Or 1WD
Believe it or not 1WD actually existed

@@mattarnold198 No not motorbikes. Cars wayyy back in the early 20th century had 1WD check out the Jam Handy film on the Chevrolet differential.
'Prefer?' is a difficult question. They can both kick ass. Arguably, these days front wheel drive technology allows really serious performance for those on a real-world budget, rear wheel drive generally being found in more expensive cars. But it isn't the compromise it once may have been. And most people with rear wheel drive cars, A: don't take them on track, and, B: don't drift them around roundabouts on public roads, so it's advantages are rarely exploited. Rear wheel drive will still give the purist, most engaging overall drive. But it's not the easy decision it was in years past.
A sensible post, on RUclips? Preposterous! But yes. I would say though that even driving normally, RWD just feels more natural- the way the weight shifts under even low throttle just makes more sense, it doesn't feel like it's going to understeer. Not disagreeing in the slightest, I don't feel like pushing a RWD car is necessary to feel the benefit though. For most people though, FWD is probably better. Also many RWD cars (new Merc C class) are half as fun as good FWD cars (newer Fiestas, Pug 306, etc).
@@ApothecaryTerry Weight transfer control in an FF is unintuitive, for sure, but I would not say it is bad, just takes a bit of learning in order to make it go fast. And while I do agree that weight transfer under throttle tends toward understeer in an FF car, you generally do not want to corner and punch the throttle at the same time in an FF. You want to be more on the brakes into and through the corner, where weight transfer is to your benefit, bearing down on the front wheels to entirely counter understeer. A good FF car and a good driver will need to worry more about oversteer, in fact. Just one of many ways FF cars behave differently and need to be driven using different techniques than an FR car.
And yes, I am a die-hard FF enthusiast, hehe. Still love a good RWD car, though.
@@konekoray9323 I don't dislike FF, I wouldn't even say it's necessarily worse (except for drifting/racing), it's just that FR is more intuitive- understanding the way it works comes more naturally. I do prefer FR because power oversteer is the greatest invention since scotch (best kept separate) but having driven Porsches, Astons (Vantage on slicks), BMWs, my GS450h (total beast, love it), MX5s, an MR2, a GTR and more; I will confidently say that the Peugeot 306 is the best car I've ever been in. Objectively, the GS is the best on that list as, other than lateral grip and steering feel, it's exceptional at everything (why I bought it), GTR wins for outright performance and the MR2 has probably the best steering but nothing has ever consistently put a smile on my face like a 306.
@@ApothecaryTerry I may not have had the luck of being able drive most of those cars, but I would agree on almost all accounts. Only difference is I would say FF is just as viable for racing as RWD is. Sure, it is not suitable for a supercar with over a thousand horsepower, but in a sensible car with around 400 horsepower, you can be damn fast.
If you raced two cars that were identical in every way, only difference was one was FF and one was FR, I am certain the FF would stand a chance at winning, circuit depending. FF has its weaknesses, but it also has its strengths, strengths I almost never seem to hear anyone talk about. Overall, it just takes a different style of driving. One that is admittedly not as 8ntuitive as an FR, but one I personally prefer.
Also, forgive me if I sound argumentative, I do not try to me. I am just very passionate about FF cars, and I will swear on my life till the day I die by their merits as racing machines.
@@konekoray9323 It's worth doing a driving experience thingy, that's how I drove the GTR and it was awesome. I have got pretty lucky with driving nice cars on the road though!
An equivalent FF car will generally be slower than FR due to the physics, hence all the fastest racing cars have driven rear wheels (in whatever format including AWD) and BTCC handicaps RWD cars. FF cars are better under contact though as they're inherently more stable, which is why a lot of younger drivers go into stuff like the Clio cup- which is also great to watch. That's a big thing for me- if the question is "which is faster?" then FR wins due to physics, but "which is a better racecar?" isn't that simple, since I'd say watching FF cars racing each other is, on average, more entertaining.
Don't worry about sounding argumentative, I'm not! At the end of the day we're both into cars so have a lot more in common than we disagree on.
But... but I like both :/
crackedcookies shut up youre a crackedcookie and crackedcookies cant drive
So you like AWD
Dr Gabe I like all 3 lol
All have their benefits, you gotta love all cars in general, never bash another car for being different
crackedcookies AWD!!!
So let's take both and combine them! --> 4WD :D
Bullisurfer for more drivetrain power losses and increased weight! :D
Bullisurfer
No, you would get AWD not 4WD, they are different... just fucking search the difference
taking the name into account, it seems that as long as you have 4 wheels, 4 wheel drive is all wheel drive.
though generally, awd refers to an always on system while 4wd refers to a switchable system.
Aka AWD
Bullisurfer 4WD means means 4×4 not AWD , its a big difference
My childhood was crushed when i adopted many of my favorite cars from nfsu; rsx, integra, eclipse, celica, tiburon. And found out all had drive trains that just didnt belong in jdm sports cars
FYI: Torque steer is a result of the driveshafts not being equal length. This is the case if you have the engine placed transversally, however, if the engine is longitudinally placed, with the gearbox placed behind (Front Wheel Drive, Front Engine) or before (FWD, Mid Engine) the engine, the driveshafts can be completely symmetrical, an there's no torque steer.
You forgot to mention tire heat/wear is not even on fwd since the front is doing everything (putting power down and manuvering)
It makes it worse tho
Indeed.
you just swap them time to time
Tire wear on RWD is not even too... Driven rear wheels will wearing out faster. FWD is worse but not by far margin.

1:02 ummm the oil crisis started in the early 70s and not the 50s
It actually was in the 50’s. Around the same time that lizards were spying on us from underneath the moons crust. Leading to moon landing in 69 (fake btw) as a test to see if we could defend ourselves.
Julian Martinez uh is that automotive related or some topic which is not applied to this?
ethan aldrich lamatan late 1973 to be exact
The have been many oil crises. From the suze in 52 onwards
Maceroni and where to be exact? I need answers
I was certain my next car would be rwd or awd. Then I drove the 10th gen SI and bought it on the spot. A limited slip eliminated torque steer and it actually ate up curves and felt planted and nimble at the same time. Do I regret passing up a WRX or Focus RS? Not that much. The shifter is better than the Subie and the RS has already had issues. FWD and AWD often shares the same handling complaint- understeer and a less than organic feel. RWD cars are more prone to swap ends but offer a seriously skilled driver a unique experience. But for most of us
fwd or awd is still fun and you live to tell about it. The Type R, Megane, and 205 all show how spectacular a well sorted fwd car can be.
Paul Stabin this car is a great platform. There are already tuners out there developing drop in turbos that can produce over 300whp
The Focus RS is not a full time AWD, that's lame.
Terrab Nadia it's lightest in it's class and gets the best fuel economy in it's class? Probably will prove to be the most reliable too
Anirudh Upadhyayula on a 1.5 its already pushed to the limit.. They should have kept the k series
You can counteract understeer in fwd by using the parking brake. Just don't go in too much or you'll spin out / warp the rear rotors over time. Very useful in winter driving
FINALLY A GOOD DAMN OLD STARLET IS MENTIONED IN A VIDEO
Underrated pro of a fwd car is that there is no annoying hump in between your legs in the middle seat
Yahya, you could do better than that...
Yahya Sajid Many cars that have 4WD as an option tend to have that hump aswell, so its a con-con situation
:D what do you mean by that? Fwd cars don't have that, so how is it con-con?
Or am I missing something
Yahya Sajid For example, any Audi except for the A1, A2, A3 are 4wd prepped but most of them don’t have 4wd installed. But it still has the hump for the 4wd transmission and drivetrain. SUV’s have this alot aswell
Yahya Sajid So theres no pro in that case, its still FWD and you still got that hump
I had an MG ZT, and mine had the small lip spoiler because I prefered the less ''boy racer'' look, however that thing(especially after replacing my B5 Audi A4) was extremely tail happy given it being a FF car. On roundabouts, especially in the wet, you could often just feel the back end start to float, this might just be something Rover engineered badly, but it was very fun to drive, and pretty good in the snow too ( which when i was living in Glasgow was important) and I thought this was worth sharing.
Rear Wheel Drive.. soo much more fun being pushed thru a powered turn than it is being pulled to the outer edge of a turn (or beyond)
Funniest thing I’ve ever seen was watching a Civic getting bullied by my E36 and friends Coyote on the freeway. Icing on the cake was when we all took a 50mph turn at 80mph, the Civic understeered into the wall hilariously trying to keep up.
Unexperienced front wheel drive car driver. You have to use left foot braking in fwd cars. Once you master left foot braking a fwd car will be on rails around any turn performing with, or even outperforming any rwd car in that same turn. You basically get 4wd handling characteristics minus the extra weight a 4wd drivetrain has. For an unexperienced fwd driver, understeering into a wall sounds about right tho. Lol
I own both FWD and RWD and in all honesty a well sorted FWD car like a Fiesta RS or an Integra Type R are more than capable and just as engaging as their RWD counterparts.
There is no Fiesta RS...I don't disagree with you otherwise, but you might want to edit that comment.
Correction Fiesta ST
What about fwd with 4ws (4 wheel steer) like the Honda prelude?
HEY WHAT'S WITH THE THE PERSONA 4 SOUND EFFECTS??
Other people: Ofc RWD to drift.

AWD does not win always. it is heavy und there is more transmition loss
Florian Pike cool, he said most of the time
depends on your engine, for cars like GT-R its no problem at all..
Florian Pike but AWD gives you better acceleration and more traction
It's also less reliable and much more expensive to fix.
I like and handles great in all weather
I think the question is - do you like your car being pulled(FWD) to the direction of the steer or, being pushed(RWD)and hopefully steering holds traction to where you intended to go to
The renault twingo is not only RWD but also has a transverse rear engine. Something that was reserved for the smart fortwo for a long time.

I'd like to get a rwd car, but i don't have much experience yet, and because correcting your car when backwards on the track flying out of a corner is quite hard, i think fwd is the safer platform to learn racing on, because correcting is easier, hence why I went for a fiesta st instead of a BRZ or MX5 for my first car
Wheres that video from? 2:33
Which one though is easier to work on mechanically the front wheel drive which has little room to spare or the rear wheel drive that generally has more room in the engine compartment.
In RWD you can also mount engine transverse like in old skodas and nsx
Wojtek B not if it is front engine
A true petrol-head I meant nsx has transwerse mounted engine, not rear engine.
Škodas are rr from 1000mb to 130, earlier Škodas were front engine rwd
My Acura vigor is fwd transverse engine layout
Ive been driving a EG Civic on track and its perfect for the job. Lightweight, powerful, predictable handling, easy to counter oversteer, easy to set up. I now have a BMW E36 and I will bring it on track soon, I expect to find harder balance between front and rear grip, should drive similarly for the most part, it will probably need more modulation on the gas mid corner or exiting(depending on tire set up).
How was it??? I can’t pick between an e36 323i or a civic ep3
@@aidenemmitt1152 E36 coupe was a 318is with m44 and 3.45 open diff, got camber plates/arms and JOM blueline suspension. The rear had the tenancy to snap on corner entry, but the setup was bit strange as it oversteered a bit in the high speed corners. I tried 1cm wider tire, but it was the same. I installed LSD and it oversteered rarely and only on corner exit(possibly due to drive style), but it was bit more controllable. Also the car needs bigger brakes(E46 330i were good IMO) as brake fade is quite bad after several laps. I was happy with it on normal roads, but on track I would have changed some suspension settings to get rid of the understeer, if I had it for longer. I now have E36 sedan with M54b30 but I am getting it on track the next spring. I also have EP3, which needs proper adjustable coilovers/tire combo to feel good on track. Thats due to the front suspension being a Macpherson strut.
I would say the ep3 feels more like a race car, cause of the close ratio gearbox and the high rev engine. Also more powerful. The e36 has loads of potential with the M52b25 engine, but you would have to invest to pull it out of the car. And really both cars would drive nothing alike, so I guess it would depend on your preference more than anything. My preference usually leans towards a car that needs less mods and is cheaper to fix, but I want to learn driving RWD on the limit for cheaper. I usually go for mods that help braking and stability(to reduce uneven tire wear as much as possible). The rest is just fun for me, Im not competing as that needs a heavy wallet.
My 1.6l turbo sentra is front wheel drive and it freaking smashes!
Mid-Engine RWD is the best layout by far. Perfect weight balance, each set of wheels has their own job, and pretty hard to slide unless you lift-off oversteer. Great on track (Porsche GT4 RS & any McLaren) and on dirt (Lancia Stratos). I drive a r53 Mini Cooper S now and I miss my old 986 Boxster DESPERATELY.
RWD or FWD the most important is the part behind of the steering wheel. The Driver
No, the chair
No the steering shaft
No, the paper cup
No, the water in the paper cup
No, it’s the temperature of the water in the paper cup.
Overseer is better, you feel when it gets to the limit or loss or traction than you can save it. Fwd just plow on an you can not really save it before the wrong side of the road.
not really
I honestly really love both I’d say for rally types of racing fwd but for performance supercars rwd
My bsa scout has the drivetrain backwards so the gearbox is before the engine
Well I’m from Texas so obviously RWD.....with 4x4
“AWD generally wins” 😂😭😔
RWD is rough sometimes because rain, puddles, slush, and snow exists.
FWD gets a bad rap because not all FWD cars are designed to be performance beasts.
I currently own both. Both are equally as good with either layouts.
What's the song called
RWD for me, just a nicer feel really
More ways to get out of a nasty situation, I swear rwd is best, had both.
RWD: you hear the tree
FWD: you see the tree
I love front wheel drive. But just recently I got a car with rear wheel drive. It's been taking time to get used to.
I have had both and I find for snowy weather for better grip rear wheel seems to be better. I don't know how true it is (probably not,) but someone once said the rear wheel drive cars are more fuel efficiant. Proably B.S., what I know about the workings of a car you could fit on a postage stamp. And, it intrigued me when he said that all-wheel drive cars usually win. It's the usually bit I don't get. When can they not win?
I've always liked the concept of rwd since each set of wheels has its own job. That said I like my FWD car better than the RWD SUV I used to drive.
Why do prefer fwd to rwd can you explain?
@@damson8832 I actually prefer RWD but a good FWD car is still better than a crappy RWD one. I replaced a Chevy blazer with a volvo s60 and never looked back.
I like both but Rwd has a special place in my heart
The real reason the industry originally made the switch to FWD in general was to preserve room inside the passenger area. As cars began to be downsized beginning with the 1977 model year of full sized General Motors cars, Deville, Electra, Bonneville, Catalina, 88, 98, Impala, Caprice, room inside was shrinking as well. When the next round of downsizing happened sometime in the 80's, is when the switch happened.
Is... Is that some Persona4 sounds I hear? I'm pretty sure I used that for a message tone way back when...
Red is better for track and most sports cars but fwd is better on gas
RWD and/or 4WD for life boys, drifting my truck on turns when it rains is just too good😂
fwd under acceleration in a corner can pull the front end around when needed quickly for a drastic change in corner departure depending on how good your front tires are and how hard you hit the gas. Add this in addition to catching the left hand gutter with your left hand tires to assist in cornering harder while pulling around a left hand hairpin is enough to make a rwd drive jealous. If you know what I mean. But awd/4wd is the best hands down.
I thoroughly enjoy these videos
RWD is great for drifting!!!!
I'm mostly for RWD but my dream build is FWD.
Fun little history: one of the first mass produced fwd car was the traction avant (litteraly FWD in french) by citroen in the 1940' and 1950'. I was blessed to drive one and let me tell you that this car is still "the queen of the road".
What about the MR2 lay-out. It has it's engine in the back and has front wheel drive
My answer is yes, awd rocks!
maxxjett films Except in gas mileage and longevity of life and easier to repair?
Angel Gutierrez all minor tradeoffs to me
Angel Gutierrez the benefits outweigh the cost for me
Except better launches, better grip around corners, all season drivability
RWD Anytime!❤️
But which is faster exiting a corner tho?🤔
I like both of them. even I haven't drive rwd coupe (because here is hell expensive), but I have driving 4wd (not awd) pickup truck. my requirement for buying a car is simple:
-drivetrain doesn't matter.
-hatchback and coupe are priority
-equipped with manual transimission (or other transmissions that allow me to use fully (without clutch pedal is acceptable) manual transmission)
-all wheel is equipped with disc brake
-has power at least 100 HP (in default).
I overtake as good as any fwd in corners with my old Mercedes rwd. Have absolutely pissed off hundreds of wouldbe´s XD
I like both
But i prefer rwd
Exept if i am doing rally then fwd is better
Byt i prefer rwd and 4wd (awd) the most
Didn’t know this channel exis
fwd makes great dailys, but i love the front engine rwd platform, especially because of how much easier repairs are.
0:08 this car is from my city here i live 😂😂😂
Since I live in Canada, I have no choice but to buy fwd because I'm not going to risk losing traction and heavily crashing in a rwd.
Anything can be driven in snow, it's not about your car it's about your driver ability. I'm sure people in Canada drove in the 50/60/70's when most cars were RWD and people used to rally RWD cars often until the dominance of AWD in the 80's. But I can respect that you want to be safe, I'm just saying you're not as limited as you think.
Anonymous User there is something called traction control and ESP which prevent that from happening. So you choose whether you want to have grip or not at the press of a button. And in fwd you can still crash by understeering... As seen in this video where one of the fwd cars crashed.
If your rwd is weak enough, sliding isn't too much of an issue. What was an issue in my frontier was getting stuck everywhere lol.
you know that you can control the throttle right?
A fwd does feel like it has more traction in the snow.
I'vw had coupoe rear wheels and couple front wheel coups. I crashed rear wheel ones. Eclipse Gt stipl runs fast and handles well everyday.
I don't really bother if it's FWD or RWD, if it is fun to drive, and I can control it well
Citroen DS is a really really great FWD car far ahead for it's time.
let's not forget the traction avant :)
la traction avant, les flics après (the traction first, the cop after) Quote from a french robber who used modified "race" traction to great efficiency.
And blessed I was to drive one, it is still the queen of the road
Was there ever a rear engine & FWD layout in the history of automobile designs? If a front engine can transfer power to the rear then the opposite can work as well right?
You missed mid engine just behind the front axel layout like the Honda s2000
Good thing I'm a REAL car guy who drives every layout there is. A FWD Honda Civic SiR with a tuned NA 1.6L B16A with 230 HP, a RWD BMW 528i Wagon, an AWD Subaru Forester XT, and a Toyota Hilux 4x4.
The Toyota Hilux are actually 4WD not 4X4. You sure you have one?
Do you even know the difference of AWD and 4x4?
Dayum, that SiR sounds like a beast. EF, EG or EK?
Awd aka 4wd is good for snow and small cars and suvs 4x4 is for trucks, vans and some suvs
@@thisthingmint250 No, 4wd and 4x4 are the same, AWD is a different system.
FWD with a LSD is a life changing experience.
What about TTD ( track track drive) ?
One way to think about cars is:
Understeer=the front of the car hits the tree
Oversteer=the back of the car hits the tree
Horsepower=how fast the car hits the tree
Torque=how far the tree moves when the car hits it
"Torque=how far the tree moves when the car hits it"

Love the Civic vs Miata thumbnail.
I love (almost) all cars, regardless of layout, but I definitely have my preferences. FF for life.
AWD beats both?... Well If you push hard AWD just understeers almost the same as FWD. AWD has more power train losses to RWD and RWD to FWD (hence why they are more fuel efficient, but RWD with Rear engine have same drive train losses =))
No it doesn't have to understeer at all. In new cars there are clever diffs and electronics which eliminate that perfectly. Even the boring SUVs can now powerslide out of corners on low traction surface.
I drove several AWD cars from an 525ix E34 (which preferes the Rear wheels) over Jeep Cherokees to Subaru Impreza from 2004 (yeah newer Sport AWD I had not had yet because most cars I drive are boring Nissans like the Quasqai cashcow at the dealership I sometimes work for)... but Steering is currupted and that imprezza behaved almost like a sporty FWD car but went out of corners better. Still it did understeer quite a lot.
tommy4862 nigga awd cars are worst on track
Tell that to performante and 918 you genius.
With good pedal techniques you can avoid understeer.

To be fair I'm quite a fan of FWD cars due to their handling characteristics
The Almighty Twingo how so? Their handling is worse except in the rain or snow. And realistically with all the drivers aids they're not even better in the rain anymore.
The Almighty Twingo yeah look at the miata or any mid engined porches. They are considered to have the best handling and they are both rwd
