*Update:* Turns out shrinking enemies IS useful! You can simply walk over them and flatten them, killing them in one hit. Neat!

It's true, a decent chunk of the Netherlands lies below sea level. Managed to un-wettify and keep certain areas dry thanks to the dikes and polders.
Because we are so low to the ground, we compensate by getting high. Either physical tallness or weed.

And I'll still take the final turret section with Reflux over the flying rocket section of the final boss in Rayman 2. Man, that was just so frustrating. One mistake and Razorbeard's health resets.

YESSSSS THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. Rayman 3 is my childhood game and I always loved its platformer/shooter combo, those two genres are still my favorite to play!!! It's amazing to me how little platformers realized that shooting combat works way more than melee, first-person shooters like Quake and the modern Doom titles already incentivize movement and precision in a way that's easy to translate back into a platformer. In-fact Rayman 3's system of platforming hallway > small open arena > platforming hallway is actually the same system that games like Serious Sam were prototyping, which along with the aforementioned Quake was the DNA that created Doom 2016 and Eternal, and it's amazing how Rayman 3 manages to stay so fresh with its power-ups and unique enemies and OH MY GOD the combo system, since actual shooters of the era that tried the hallway arena approach usually end up stale and/or extremely simple. I'm sorry I used this an excuse to infodump about retro FPS, it will happen again.

    • @jurtheorc8117
      @jurtheorc8117 Год назад +2

You may find Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath interesting in this regard. It's from both third and first person, with the third person used for general navigation and the first person for FPS with live creatures as ammo.
Stunkz (round skunks) are used as smoke and gas bombs, Fuzzles grab onto and bite enemies, Bolamites (that's bola mites-- essentially spiders) wrap up enemies, Chippunks (loud round squirrels) distract enemies if you're not seen yet, and there's some others.
There's also Insecticide for DS and PC. Almost Psychonauts-ish art directions for a world where insects have ended up the dominant species... in rather human, urban environments.
What's unique is that the platformer shooter segments take turns with another gameplay style. That being 3D point-and-click adventure. No jumping and blasting in those, just being a four-legged chrysalid detective.
Not an amazing game from what i know, but there's a lot to it that'd make one think there's room for more to be done with the setting and characters.

Like i said to you on Twitter mere moments ago (relative to the start of writing this comment), this is a subject that doesn't get talked about a lot. So it's fun to see, and i'm going to share, shout and force my own findings and opinions right in this here comment section without anyone asking about it.
Snacks are 50 cents a piece for the duration of my rantulation. And it's all stale garlic bread. Hope you're not a vampire.
That aside, let's get poppin'. Be warned, this is a colossus of a comment and i'm probably going to divide it in two parts. Perhaps more
First off: big compliments to all the production value in your little persona character and all the different stances, drawings, sketches and animation and general editing. I reckon a number of those models were made specifically for the video, so extra respect for going the extra mile.
Secondly: I've done my own research over the years into the subject as a result from Nitro Rad's videos as well, but from an... opposite viewpoint, if that's a good way of putting it.
If you've watched his video on Kya: Dark Lineage from about five or so years ago, in it he writes off Kya's combat as "button mashing doing just fine" and that a remake would be better off "cutting the fat".
I *really* like that game and there's far more to the combat than James gave it credit for. Or seemed to try and explore, even. So i wanted to look into what makes the combat work so i could better defend my own viewpoints with better arguments.
There seems to be two extremes of going about combat in 3D platformers.
Intermarrying the movement with the "fighting" would be on one end: Think Mario, like you said. Enemies are more akin to obstacles that actually exhibit some form of individuality and behaviour.
On the other end would be having the combat separate from the platforming.
This is where i'd place Kya: When you approach a humanoid enemy, she enters a Fighting stance and the Square, Triangle and Circle button now all perform dedicat Punches, Kicks and Grabs with different combinations.
Going in and out this stance happens pretty quickly. It's almost similar to Prince of Persia, with sheathing and unsheathing weapons for either combat or platforming.
And somewhere between these two ends are all other 3D platformers. Vexx, Sonic Unleashed, the Maximo games, Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars etc.
Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter are definitely on the more succesful and fondly remembered end of combat-heavy platformers. Or at least predominantly platformers, which seems to have gotten less as either series went on.
The reason for this is probably for a reason James himself stated on his Rayman 3 video from years ago: The style of combat still has you adhering to the base gameplay style of a Platformer. Running and Jumping, staying active and avoiding incoming danger at any range, with the terrain itself becoming as much of a weapon as a hazard.
A big arsenal of toys for different situations helps in this department. I believe some guns from J&D and R&C are even better used at closer range (and i know for a fact R&C has a Shock Rocket analogue in the Visibomb Gun)
But generally, more melee-oriented combat just seems to not gel as well, Vexx and I-Ninja be darned.
Rayman's on an interesting point in this front: His physiology places him in *both* Ranged and Melee at once. Man's a master of unarmed combat.
It's interesting to still feel the satisfaction of hearing a sucker punch connect while technically playing at range.
Like you said too towards the latter half of this video: The enemy design is also an important factor. The Hoodlums especially are some of the wildest and craziest enemy factions i've ever seen in a 3D platformer. And that can allow for a lot of fun on gameplay design to fight them.
There may be some base enemy types with toughter variants later on that have slightly different attacks, but it's important to have a solid backbone. All the other Hoodlum types have their own strategies to deal with you and be dealt with by you, as you said in the video, which keeps stuff interesting, and the *matchups* of enemies are important too.
For example, you now know how to deal with type nr. 1 and type nr. 2, now how will you face off against them together? That's also further ways of keeping combat interesting with stuff you've seen before.
You've hit the head on the nail where it concerns the Combat Fatigues! That's a thing that i think makes people look more favourably upon combat in 3D platformers, i think: Moves having utility for combat AND platforming.
You've already explained why that's great with the Fatigues, both in their individual variants and their time durations. Because they're not permanent, it adds in another element often seen in platformers:
    Exploration.
There's an obstacle or something you can't quite conquer, but you know what would be needed to do so because you've been in the same situation earlier in the game. Like the corkscrew platforms and the thick walls (Vortex Fist and Heavy Metal Punch).
So you gotta find these specific Fatigues by looking around. In this sense, they kind of amount to keys-- just have them do one thing to open up the road ahead.
But thanks to viability in combat as well as that Combo Meter, they retain more value for seeking out than if they *had* just been a key. The combo meter one being a bit more variable depending on how much the player cares about it.
These two are also outright required for certain enemies (the Hoodbombers on stilts, and the shoulder toilet-mounted guys with hockey armor).
The Shock Rocket's not really used in in-the-moment combat thanks to its sniping, like you said in the video. And the Throttlecopter is pure platforming that lasts for the duration of a fart.
(Sidenote: I believe the Vortex Fist's shrinking of enemies make them weaker. Smaller health pools and less outgoing damage)
The Lockjaw is undoubtedly the best one of all the Fatigues to be used for Platforming and Combat alike, even if it's situational: Because grabbing onto the next grapple points still requires more active input from the player on connecting from one point to the next and landing on a safe place.
It's for reasons like this that Chain and Whip-type weapons are very beloved in games, i feel. Sure Kratos can slash and stab with the Blades of Chaos on their own, but with the CHAINS?!
That opens up a good bit of level navigation opportunities to cool down in-between combat. Grappling hooks, swing points (both vertical AND horizontal), rappelling alongside walls to up and down or left and right, that's a wealth of options for *movement* with a *weapon*.
(in that regard, a Character Action game is almost the inverse of a Platformer: Predominantly fighting where the platforming breaks up the main gameplay style)
In regards to mentioning Unleashed: A person who's more experienced with Character Action type games (think Darksiders, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, God of War) by name of ChaserTech, has recently been looking to make more in-depth videos on combat and combat elements of different such games.
And the Werehog is among one of the very first videos on that subject.
I recommend giving it a look if you think you'd be interested! It's mainly looking at the Werehog combat specifically, rather than its presence in the game compared to daytime stages.
