It's been said that one day, early in his career, Steve went to his agent, (Bernie, Bernard?) and said "why do you stick by me? I'm a failure at everything I try." His agent said "Steve baby, one day you will buy me a Rolls Royce." And he did. Steve Martin is of the most natural and talented entertainers ever.
The first banjo number was "Theme From Ramblin' Man." This must be before he wrote "I'm a Ramblin' Guy," his vocalized show-opener, which subsequently formed a medley with this piece.
When i watch early Steve Martin, to me, it looks like he was trying to find his way in real time. Steve changed stand up. He totally turned it inside out, he mocked it, laughed it, etc. He taught audiences and comics “u don’t have to do it like Carlin, Pryor, Robert Klein to be funny”. He deserved every bit of his success cuz he busted his butt to get their.
He’s being funny using his banjo as a prop. Also telling jokes from the 70’s (dueling banjos joke, balloon breathing leading to bigger things ~ anti drug ads).😊
OK, you gave it a try, so don't watch any more. But perhaps you could appreciate he was entertaining live audiences with fresh, current comedy bits 50 years ago. Ive' seen most of these gags before and they still make me laugh. He's a talented comedian!
Sorry you feel that way. Personally I believe he was in a path few people at his time could walk. Awkward comedy was a taboo. You either were wranchy and dirty minded, clean and wholesome, or awkward and out going.

The squeaking and squawking as he’s brushing his banjo against the mike (being completely professional) is intentional ~~ hilarious!
❤
The show biz guts Steve had/has. Wow. A real pro.
When he brought the (his?) dog out and ended the bit. Beautiful!
When he gets cookin' on the banjo and smiles at the camera, he bears a resemblance to John Fogerty! ;)
Saw his act at the Cellar Door in Georgetown, Washington D,C. mid seventies. My ribs ached for days.

That was Steve's rendition of Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown."

@@ozzyfan7299 wow you aren’t kidding. That man could play! I’m a guitar player so I don’t need to over listen to that gentleman’s playing.
Someone told me to look at his early stuff when I was critical towards his older act. Well thanks buddy, now I can safely say he _always_ sucked.
