      You can push them a little harder than the 811's so I guess its in the way you look at it.

    Sorry for My stupidity. Does ameritron make any amps for mobile applications that a Galaxy or a Stryker Radio will work with? Again,I apologize. Just wondering as I was told that these are way above Dave made,X Force and the such. Thanks to all,Troy.

      well they make a 500 watt mobile amplifier that will work, but IMHO since its mobile anyway, get a Texas Star and be done with it.

    I have 2 of those Kem-Tron channel boxes for the 858 PL chip. (Seen it under the watt meter) 1 was working but goes into scan by itself and the other just stays on channel 40 all the time. No info on the net. Have you ever seen/had this happen with yours? I changed the switch and 1 cap that looked bad but didn't help. We're friends on Facebook also. I like all of your videos. Very informative.
    Thanks Shane

    • @tramdr
      @tramdr  7 лет назад

      The Kem-Tron I have under the wattmeter is just a Freq counter only. It works like the Glen 326G as it has the offsets so you can hook it into the receive of a radio and still get the correct frequency. This model FC-40-T-R (Frequency Counter Transmit - Receive) is not a VFO in any way. I have 2 of these that work great. I like them because of the offset and the big display. I do have a Tekniq VFO that looks like a Black PAL VFO with digital readout. It does not work. Has problems similar to what you described about your Kem-Tron VFO. Can't find any info on it so it sits. :(

      Today I was putting away some more stuff that didn't sell at Hamvention and saw that I do have one of those Kemtron PLL controllers. I have no info on it and have never tried to hook it up. If you find something on it let me know.

    • @kb8smu

      I gave up on mine. All the caps are probably out of spec and it has 8 IC chips that probably need checked/changed. One was hooked to a Cobra 29 LTD (non classic, the older one) and the other to a Cobra 139 XLR. I also snipped the ribbon cable on one to use on another project lol. There's no info at all on the internet. ☹

    • @tramdr
      @tramdr  7 лет назад +1

      I messed with the digital VFO for a while with no luck and then gave up. Because I am not good with PLL's I never even tried with the controller. A couple of buddies of mine who know PLL's pin for pin in their heads and 1 can even count in binary and hex will have a better shot at it than me.

    • @tramdr
      @tramdr  7 лет назад

      first thing I do in this vintage stuff from the 70-80's is change the caps. However with the controller, not worth my time to try to fix it and then have someone offer $30 for it.

      no never run more than 200 watts on am

    • @tramdr
      @tramdr  2 года назад +1

      That amp is known to have a small transformer and 811's cannot take much. Many replace the 811's with 572B's which can take a lot more, but you still have to deal with the small tranny. That amp goes for about $800 used now. I liked it a lot, wish I had not sold it. Ameritron also makes one designed for the 572B's. It is a much heavier version of this. However, the new selling price of the Ameriron AL-572 is a whopping $2399! I always run my amps at low dead key, and let them swing, and I don't push the swing over the amps limit. I believe 9 out of 10 blown amps are caused by operator error.

    • @tramdr
      @tramdr  5 лет назад

      It comes new from the factory with 10 meters disconnected. There is a simple mod (cut 1 wire if I remember right) that will allow it to work on 10 meters. Any amp that I know of that works on 10 meters will work on 11 meters. That's the very reason some amps are sold without 10 meters working, to keep the 11 meter guys off of it. The only amp made I know of that would work on 10 meters and not 11 meters was late (newer) versions of the Heathkit SB-220. That amp had an 11 meter filter or block on the input side of it. It was called just a 'Filter' in the schematics. Since this filter only blocked 11 meters, that amp would work on 10 meters and not 11 meters. For those who wanted to use it on 11 meters, just bypass the 'filter'. Soon after Heathkit came out with the SB-221, same amp, but did not include 10 meters at all, just 15-80 meters. It had to be slightly modded to get 10 meters back in it! I think this was all done to pass the FCC back then as the CB boom was at full force and there where many many Cb'ers back then using Ham amps for 11 meters.

      well this video shows it doing close to 900 peak into a dummy load with a new set of 572b tubes in it. However with 811a (because I ended up selling the set of 572B tubes) it did less, so IMHO it won't do it with 811a tubes but will do it (and it was loafing) with 572b tubes.
