    Hey SMFR. Since the pio's operate the channel, i wanted to ask a question in hopes that maybe you can answer or someone who knows here in the comments. Why do some cities have ems attached to the fire department and some dont? Im curious because im looking to get in to ems but i want to stay separate from fire and in with a lot of these places, ems is cross-trained as firefighters which isnt what im wanting to do. Like with SM and my current city of Orlando and Tampa, its fire rescue so ems is attached to the fire department. However i see on, like Nightwatch which in New Orleans, EMS was separate from fire, but when they went to Tampa in season 4, thats where fire and ems were together. Obviously there are private company ambulance services like for instance AMR or those attached to hospitals, but are there reasons as to why some cities would choose to combine or split fire and ems?

    • @coloradod3649
      @coloradod3649 3 года назад +1

      Most often EMS is separate from the FD in cities that have city run hospitals that had their own ambulance service before it became popular to have EMS run by the FD. This is not always the case but can be seen in Denver, Chicago, New York and others. Most Fire Districts in Colorado at least were created as “All Hazard” Fire Rescue and thus included EMS as well as Fire, HazMat and Technical Rescue. Many parts of the US have adopted different models and you can see all of these being handled by different agencies or everything including law enforcement being done by 1 agency. It just depends on what the people that formed these cities/counties or areas wanted and how they historically formed for that particular location. There are pluses and minuses for any of these configurations and most agencies try to evolve and perform the best service possible as South Met does.

      @rubio8888 3 года назад

      I live in a rural area of Colorado ems is county ems but fire runs with ems even though different departments for sets of hands all of where I am is mostly volunteer

    • @schnemannfilms
      @schnemannfilms 3 года назад

      Nice to know: Even in other countries like Germany for example, some fire departments run EMS and others not.

    • @FiendFyreNyx
      @FiendFyreNyx 3 года назад

      @@coloradod3649 Ya this make a lot of sense. I did a little more digging after I posted the question and was noticing that some places have government ran ems services while others have theirs tied with fir rescue because of, like you said, the all hazard. Over in the UK, almost all of their ambulance services are under the NHS and New Orleans ems is ran under the New Orleans Health Department which is why theirs is separate from fire. Thanks for the input because i had to spend so much time searching and basically ended up only getting any info from wikipedia of all places. I think in mentioned in my original comment that i was looking into ems as a career but i didnt really want to have to be a firefighter as well if i went with city but then also the dealing with some of the hassles of private company ems.

    • @hihfty
      @hihfty 3 года назад

      There are so many different answers to this questions its even hard to scratch the surface. The short answer comes down to money. There is a lot of money in ambulance billing and the cities would like to keep the revenue thats generated from it. By having Fire and EMS together you're generating money and upping staffing by putting trained firefighters in an ambulance. In cities such as Boston and New york they choose to separate the two departments and simply focus on there areas of specialty but they are still municipally run departments. In sub urban departments you tend to see EMS and Fire together because you're generally lower staffed then the Metro areas and not within a reasonable distance for a hospital based system to make sense. There are a million views on how to operate a Public safety system and it all comes down to what makes sense in your area or if a hospital based EMS system even exists in your area. At the end of the day there is no national guideline or direction federally as to how to operate. So individual cities and town decide what kind of service they want.

      Yes! People who work for other fire departments are welcome to apply at South Metro. Firefighters may have 2 different options depending on what candidates SMFR is hiring at the time. Entry-level firefighters attend a 16-week academy, while experienced and already paid firefighters could be able to attend a shorter "lateral" academy.
