My grandmother sent this to me on an audio tape when I was a missionary in Hong Kong in mid 90s. I probably listened to it no less than 150 times. The transformative power of the Atonement sank deep in my heart and changed me. I'm so grateful for the hard work and preparation that Elder Maxwell did to make that possible for me.

Your husband (I think this is your husband) was a great missionary! We were in Causeway Bay together. He went by another name then...Elder Serrano could not pronounce his last name so it became Schwartzsword, which seems more complicated but there it was. Elder Schwartzsword. Hong Kong was and still is a great mission.

What a powerful witness! Elder Maxwell, thank you for all you gave to us through your faith, love, and testimony of Christ! You are missed, but your testimony resonates through time!

Such a masterpiece, President Hinckley said of Elder Maxwell “I know of no other man who spoke in such an interesting and distinct manner. His genius was the product of diligence. He was a perfectionist determined to exact from every phrase and sentence vivid imagery that brought the gospel to life. Each talk was a masterpiece, each book was a work of art. I think we shall not see one like him again”

If only we (that are) could live the words this man spoke!!! I’m trying but fall so short. But in Christ, we have forgiveness and He makes up the difference between where we are and where we should be 🥰 Praise God for the atonement.

Some of my favorite ideas from this talk:
1:37 “If you wish to go where God is, you must be like God in the principles God possesses.” Joseph Smith
3:03 if we are not serving jesus, if he is not in our thoughts and our hearts, then the things of the world will draw us instead to them
The things of the world need not be sinister, to be diverting and consuming… wow
For the serious disciple, the development of these traits are not optional
4:20 to the degree developed, those attributes will go with us through the veil of death…while all else falls behind
SO MUCH OF US ARE DEVOTED AND DEDICATED TO PERISHABLE SKILLS, WHICH WILL THEN BE OBSOLETE. IT ISN’T JUST THE MORTICIANS THAT WILL HAVE A VOCATIONAL CRISIS.
6:51 One of the problems…we have is that we consider perfection in abstraction…and it becomes intimidating [the solution is]
But when we think of it in terms of the SPECIFIC CARDINAL ATTRIBUTES, and we strive to develop these in a STEADY PROCESS OF SELF IMPROVEMENT, it’s quite a different matter
    Wow
9:00 the natural man is to be put off…he certainly not should be kept on because of a mistaken sense that the natural man constitutes our individuality
What he says right before this makes that statement so much more profound, but I’m not quite sure I grasp even a little bit how profound it actually is
9:54 these scriptural virtues are INTERTWINED, INTERACTIVE, and INTERDEPENDENT
…blessed are the meek, because they are not easily offended
11:11 “there are so many waiting to be easily be offended…have a chip on your shoulder so big, you can’t even walk through the foyer so to speak without it being knocked off”
11:55 MERCIFUL: blessed are the merciful, for they shall know the caress of causality
12:17 GRACIOUS: gracious, not tactless, easily irritated and y generous
12:25 HOLY: be holy, not worldly
12:35 will there be a loss of individuality in the next life if we become like Christ? I think not…for there are so many ways to be merciful, for example. I believe that the attributes of individuality themselves will likely be refined
13:32 come to appreciate Jesus’s qualities…then, our ADORATION for him, will produce a desire for EMULATION for him…
13:55 “the nearer man approaches perfection, the clearer are his views, and the greater are his enjoyments, til he has overcome the evils of his life and lost every desire for sin, and like the ancients, arrives at the point of faith where he is wrapped in the power and glory of his maker, and is caught up to dwell with him. But we consider that this is a station, to which no man has ever arrived in a moment.”
The clearer his views, the more we see things as they really are, and the greater the happiness.
    Dang…this is incredible
14:59 should we be surprised, that to hasten the process, the Lord gives us individually the relevant necessary clinical experiences…
15:37 “give me truths, for I am weary of the surfaces…”
15:57 it is only in the bright light of the restored gospel, that we can see the truth, who we really are, what our possibilities really are…
Not only as they really are, but as they really will be.
16:15 the lord loves each of us TOO MUCH, to merely let us going on being as we now are, because he knows what we have the possibilities to become…
    16:59
19:29 without the reality of Christ resurrection and the atonement, the plan of salvation, how could the meek really inherit the earth? How could the pure in heart really see God?
19:32 when collectively or individually, brothers and sisters, things seem to fly apart at times, what fitting imagery “in Him all things hold together”
21:30 in Jesus there is a unique blend of meekness and majesty. Christ was meekly willing to live in this world, even though he created it…”to reside on this earth as a person of no reputation”
25:00 he who is more intelligent than they all is also more meek than they all…he partook of the most bitter cup and did so WITHOUT BECOMING BITTER
THUS, he is not only a filling ATONING SAVIOR, BUT ALSO A FULLY COMPREHENDING SAVIOR
42:55 as we emulate him BY DEVELOPING LIKENESS IN HIS ATTRIBUTES, HE WILL MAGNIFY US FOR HIS PURPOSES.
43:25 “he loves the lord with all his heart, who loves nothing in comparison to him, and nothing BUT in reference to him.”

How could any of us claim to truly love Jesus Christ and God Our Heavenly Father if we do not show love for our families and fellow man whom we have seen and know!!! Christ and God the Father’s loving kindness shown in the atonement of Jesus Christ are truly supernal and unsurpassed in their volume of love, power, and transformational hope for each disciple of Jesus!!! Praise honor snd glory be to God for His truly Great plan of redemption!!!💓💓💓
His righteousness He commands us all to seek first, above all else!!! Through so doing He offers us eternal progression, here a little, there a little, line upon line, principle upon principle; eventually, by so doing, His higher thoughts and ways as Isaiah makes us aware of though higher “as the heaven’s are higher than the earth” so can ours elevate by following His exemplary ways shown in Jesus’ sinless life!!!!❤
