This movie is one of my favorites and so much fun. McCarey's The Awful Truth, with Irene Dunne and Cary Grant is equally fantastic. The scene in TAT when Irene is pretending to be Grant's floozy sister singing My Dreams Are Gone With The Wind is the funniest scene ever filmed.

So glad to see this movie mentioned again! Wonderful and nuanced. Beautiful performances by every actor. My personal favorite is Charlie Ruggles, love him in his movies. Maybe you can do If I Had A million? Ruggles and Laughton are in it, too, and it's also great. You can tell it's pre-code, but subtle. The sequence with the prostitute is amazing with the perspective it's shown in and quite hilarious. They aren't kidding they "don't make them like used to!" And don't get me started about Preston Sturges movies that are mostly forgotten.
It's certainly a gem. and everyone get's a great moment. McCarey knew how to cast them and give them exactly the right things to do that would heighlight their particular specialties. Wonderful. Steve

I certainly agree that this is a true comedy classic filled with outstanding actors but there is one thing in your review that I feel was a little bit neglected. In the climax of the film Ruggles finds the courage to stand up for himself - he shows his nobility by deciding to be his true self. I think you’ll agree that this is a really thrilling cinematic moment. Thanks Steve, keep up the great work !!

Thank you for bringing my attention to this gem. Saw it years ago, and can't wait to see it again. However, in your review, I would have liked to heard more of the actual cast than your imitations. If you were to focus on your imitations, I'd like to hear that in a separate video; and I wouldn't miss it.
Just discovered this channel and I'm hooked! Really insightful and laugh out loud moments great for a slightly snowy day in the North West of England - thank you.

Always hit the "LIKE" button as soon as I start watching; I always know I will love your review! You could probably do a year or two of posts on the great Charles Laughton's brilliant work - - one movie I especially love is "St. Martin's Lane" with Vivien Leigh and Rex Harrison. Laughton's turn as the blustery ham is so good. Happy holidays to you and yours, and all the best for the new year too!
Steve: You are a national treasure! You made my day...as you have for these many years. Thanks so much for your always informative and wildly entertaining reviews!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I recently watched your suggestion DARK HOUSE. Pretty borderline demented on all levels. What a vibe! The cast of characters is unbelievable. And there's Charles laughton being Charles LAUGHTON. Trying to be a country squire with his chorus girl in tow. The real star is that spooky House and the set design &dressing
@@markr.devereux3385 And Enest Thesiger as Horace Femm. "Have a poTAto!" Love him in this and in "Bride Of Franlkenstein. "To a new world of Gods and Monsters!" Both directed by James Whale. Fabulous!
I'm familiar with the title of this movie but this is the first time I've ever heard anyone talk about it --- and talk about it so well. Steve your impersonations are terrific and you're so knowledgeable. As you told about "Ruggles of Red Gap" I was reminded of a "Will and Grace" episode in which Karen Walker and Beverly Leslie were trying to get "ownership" of Rosario the maid. Off topic, but am I correct, Steve, that on the bookshelf next to Johnny and behind you to your right is a copy of the Riverside Shakespeare?
Happy Thanksgiving Steve… a fabulous review … just love your impersonations they are so spot on…I’d forgotten how much fun this film is…going to watch it today.. ❤

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Happy Holidays to you and yours too! I've been a fan of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford since I was in high school and it's only recently that I've been able to find more of their films. Being on a fixed income can make the film hunting tough sometimes but luckily the town that I live in has a lot of thrift shops and I still collect VHS so for a bargain hunter like myself, I've found some gems in those shops. I even keep a notebook of the films that I want to add to my collection in my travel bag, so when I'm out and about, I have a list of the films that I'm trying to find. Plus another upside is the streaming services that I have as well as having Turner Classic Movies on our cable system here since I was a kid. I watched a lot of movies on there with my grandma. She was the one who introduced me to Hitchcock with "Shadow of a Doubt" which to this day is one of my all time favorites. Now if I had to pick a favorite decade of film, it would probably be the 70s, because a lot of my favorite directors like De Palma and Scorsese, who were heavily influenced by the older films, were starting to make their mark. I have also made lists of films recommended by other directors and have been trying to find some of those "100 Films..." books.
@@LilRocker2005 I been a haunter of thrift stores for years and have come across many bargains as well. Thanks God for thrift stores and second hand DVD's & VHS. If you are ever interested and run across it, check out "David Thomson's "New Biograhical Dictionary Of Film". He is concise and covers all the legendary stars, directors and people who made the classics become the classics. Thanks for watching and Happy Holidays! Steve
Fantastic review Steve and a very happy thanksgiving to you and Johnny wow this brought back memories have not seen this comedy treasure since the early1970s but even as a kid I new this was great . Well, it's not all that surprising, it wasn't that long after the Civil War and there were still survivors and families with close ties. Also, McCary majored in sentimental. Best; Steve
Zazu's name has been pronounced all kinds of ways but in her autobiography, she says it should be pronounced Say-Zoo. Her name is derived from sections of her two aunt's names. Ruggles has always been one of my favorite movies. I always thought it should have been made into a Broadway musical. There is a film version with Lucille Ball and Red Skelton, I think. Not very good.
I love her, no matter how it's pronounced. LOL! This is the perfect piece inwhich to showcase some truely unique comedic talents at their very best. Hooray! Have a wonderful holiday season. Best; Steve

@@onaleemcgraw4048 And you are deeply in mine! OXOXOX
Thank you for bringing my attention to this gem. Saw it years ago, and can't wait to see it again. However, in your review, I would have liked to heard more of the actual cast than your imitations. If you were to focus on your imitations, I'd like to hear that in a separate video; and I wouldn't miss it.
I'll bear that in mind. thanks for watching! Happy Holdays! Steve
Thank you Steve. This is one of our favorites! Happy Thanksgiving!
Mine too! Hooray for "Ruggles"! Happy Holidays! Steve
I can't wait to see this movie. Thank you for introducing me to this movie!
My pleasure! I think you'll love it! Best Wishes; Steve
I've always enjoyed Charles Laughton whatever the roll but I do think he's great in comedy. Have a happy Thanksgiving Johnny & Steve.
You too and many thanks for watching TOQ! Steve
Just discovered this channel and I'm hooked! Really insightful and laugh out loud moments great for a slightly snowy day in the North West of England - thank you.
I just got back from London and was there for the snow! It was SO beautiful! The Brits do the holidays to perfection! London was glorious! Happy Holidays and thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Thank you, to you as well. I love Laughton. Possibley my favorite actor. Happy Holidays! Steve
Steve: You are a national treasure! You made my day...as you have for these many years. Thanks so much for your always informative and wildly entertaining reviews!
My pleasure and thank you for watching! Happy Summer! Steve
There is only one CHARLES LAUGHTON. ALWAYS steals the scene if he can. He can't help himself. Fine actor and one of my favorites
Check him out in "The Old Dark House". A James Whale spook fest with an amazing cast of equally adept scene stealers. I think you'll love i! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I will! ❤️old Hollywood motion pictures
Could be. . It's not my abode, so I'm not completely familiar with the libraray. Have a lovely Thanksgiving! Thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
Happy Thanksgiving guys!!!!!! Thank you Steve,,,and BTW,,,loved your interview with Wendy Stuart last week (:
OMG! Thank you so much! I'm so glad you were listening. She's alot of fun and we certainly had a gab fest! Happy Holidays! Steve
Happy Thanksgiving Steve… a fabulous review … just love your impersonations they are so spot on…I’d forgotten how much fun this film is…going to watch it today.. ❤

I enjoy the Frank Lloyd Wright lamp.
It doesn't make up for you not doing The Trouble With Angels nor its sequel yet.
Well, I guess I'll have to just have to resign myself to the fact. LOL! Happy Holidays! Steve
Happy Friendsgiving! I'm sincerely thankful for Steve Hays and his very special take. You always make me smile. That's important these days.

Love your reviews Steve! I have only been diving more into old school Hollywood these past couple years and your reviews have given me a whole other list of films to explore that I haven't seen yet!
Hooray! Mission accomplished! I'm delighted that my episodes have resulted in you finding and watching these wonderful character driven films. Your comment made my day! Thanks so much! Happy Holidays! Steve
Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I'll keep an eye out for it! Happy Holidays and keep the love of classic Cinema alive! You have a big fan in me!

Mary Boland does a very good Steve Hayes impression! Wait a minute, which one is Steve?
LOL! I'll give you an hour to cut that out! Happy Holidays! Steve
Great! Thanks- I’m looking forward.
Great! Have a ball in red Gap! Steve
Fantastic review Steve and a very happy thanksgiving to you and Johnny wow this brought back memories have not seen this comedy treasure since the early1970s but even as a kid I new this was great . I also loved Charlie Ruggles as Major Applegate in Bringing Up Baby 1938 . And Mary Boland is Perfect in this film it was remade in 1950 with Bob Hope And Lucile Ball with a slight difference Bob plays an actor impersonating a butler and hired by Lucile Ball it’s quite good but not great like Ruggles Of Red Gap thank you for picking this movie to review and bring it to the attention of everyone as usual you have exquisite taste in Movies in general cheers Carl .
Why, thank you. I'm so glad you like it as muchhas I do. It's a perfect little gem and so touching as well as hilarious. Laughton brings so much sincerity and heart to the proceedings. Have lovely holidays and thanks agai for watching! Best; Steve
Thank you so much Steve and if you are doing a Christmas Movie next month then that would be an early Christmas Present for us all . Would you believe for the last 25 years every Christmas Eve our family has watched Christmas In Connecticut original version of course love your review it is a magnificent review and for us it really puts us in a Christmas mood . In the last 5 years we have now a added another film so we now have a double feature as we have added Holiday Inn 1942 and feel it is also a most welcome Christmas/ Holiday movie love the music and since we eat and drink Christmas Eve while the movies are playing the extra film ensures we do get a very nice sleep well in to Christmas Day and yes in the immortal words of Alexander Yardley Chicken is my weakness cheers Carl .

I’ve known Laughton as Dr. Moreau. I’ll have to hunt for the red wave or rather the red gap.
You will love him here. He's absolutely charming! Steve
Thank you. A new...old movie for me.
Enjoy! Steve
I had a great aunt always with a worried look on her face and wringing her hands. My mom would say Aunt Gracie stop that, you look like Zasu Pitts.
My mother said the same thing to me....trouble was, I did! LOL! Steve
Charlie Ruggles looked so handsome in that top hat and that cute moustache. Those dimples.
Adorable is the firts word that comes to mind whenever he's on the screen. He could also be so kindly. Check him out as bette Davis's knowing cousin in " A Stolen Life". Thanks for watching! Steve
I watched this movie a long time ago. At that time i felt like the scene with the reciting of the Gettysburg address was sort of contrived.
Well, it's not all that surprising, it wasn't that long after the Civil War and there were still survivors and families with close ties. Also, McCary majored in sentimental. Best; Steve
Happy Thanksgiving
You too! Steve
I believe that might be "Fancy Pants" with Bob Hope and Lucille Ball.......and it's not very good.
Bob Hope, I think. "Fancy Pants"?
@@davidlionheart2438 Yes thank you..that is the one. Not good at all.
