Thanks for making such an awesome demo, Jay! You've really captured what these pedals can do for your tone. Even after all these years we can't choose between the Cali76 and the SlideRIG!
@@JayLeonardJhey, been watching your demos for a long time and they’ve been highly influential on my purchases haha! I have a question for you. I’m currently using a Wampler Ego compressor mini. I’m a Tele player in a country band and possibly considering the Cali 76 Deluxe compact. I’ve always struggled finding a happy medium on my compressor. On one hand I need that nice country spank for chickin pickin’ but then I also like the more subtle “always on” compression that plays nice with overdrives. If I were to get a studio style compressor like this, is there a setting you’d recommend that could satisfy both needs where I could set it to stay on full time? I can obviously get a second compressor and swap back and forth as needed, but that’s more real estate on my board as well as more tap dancing I’d like to avoid.
I know I’m a year late, but when you brought the color in when you turned on the Cali76 was beyond fitting. The color and texture they give to your tone are amazing. Thanks so much for great insight on two amazing pieces of equipment. Now just to decide between the two lol.
I thought I had seen just about every Cali76 review and for some reason never caught this one... until today. Superb review and a joy listening to you play. You do these amazing pedals some serious justice - I'm sold !
Great video Jay ....Norwegian Wood ....a classic ! I do that in my acoustic set with a drop D in the bass . Superb demo of these pedals . They are the best compressors in the world and I’ve tried them all in over 40 years of professional playing .
I love watching your vids and picking up sweet techniques. I was replaying 11:15 for 5 mins trying to figure out what you did after those harmonics. You pressed down on the strings BEHIND the nut to modulate the pitch. I never came across that before. Thanks!
@@adamkennedy14 Thanks for the heads up. How is this different from the Sliderig I already have? Origin page on Sliderig says "stacked compression" for slide tones. I don't see any difference with the "stacked" Cali76.
My fingers haven’t been this sore since I started playing at 14 years old. It adds a quality to your sound you can’t quite put your finger on… and playing becomes extremely addictive. What an amazing piece of gear! Appreciate all the work you do to share these gems with us Jay. Cheers from Alberta! 😁
Man, You’re a Damn Great Guitarist! Thanks for the general run down on these pedals, it helped clarify a few questions I had regarding their potential advantages. Totally Awesome Playing though, Man you’re friggin’ Great with that Tele and have a great tone too, Props Brother! I had to subscribe to see more of what you can do!
Dude! KILLED IT with that slide! I bought the Cali76 Compact because I figured I could use it as a compression pedal and as a piece of studio gear! :) I do like the Sliderig’s simplicity and dual compressor, though!
Love your videos man, easy my favourite pedal reviewer on RUclips. Perfectly made videos and you always get the best sounds out of the pedals, awesome player too great feel. I bought a wampler fuzztrations from your review. I'd love to hear you do a review of the cali76 Sacked Editions 😁
Just picked up a Cali76 with a Mesa Boogie Fillmore 25. This demo was THE deciding factor of why I did not get a lower-priced compressor...only to wish I waited and got "the real deal". At some of the more subtle settings it can be so quiet that you may think you're not even using a compressor...that is, until you bypass it and wonder "who just sucked all the life out of my sound?". Perfection in a pedal. Five stars are not enough!
@@JayLeonardJ your videos are informative, professionally edited, and enjoyable to watch. Your enthusiasm is contagious (in a good way) - keep up the good work
Great video! I’ve had my Cali 76 for ages and never quite figured it out until now, thanks for showing the attack and release controls so well. You said you have it at the end of your chain? Everyone says compressor at the front, so I’m going to try it at the end next!
Have seen Jay in another video stating he places his compressor after overdrive type pedals. I, too play it is this way. Yes, it may hiss a little but once you start to play you don't hear the hissing.
What is your opinion on the Wampler Ego Compressor? I own a Wampler. The two you are reviewing sound amazing! You are an incredible musician and thank you foe all of the awesome content!
Excellent videos man. I’m addicted to your channel. I have both the Cali76 and the Slide Rig But In the large pedal formats before they got discontinued. I’ve been mostly using the Slide Rig mostly for guitar and the Cali76 for my mixer for drum machines and synths. The Slide Rig I love larger format cause you can get two separate settings for each channel and use one as a boost and let me tell you that into a Red Muck Fuzz sustains forever!
Great demo. I love the sound you got with the Cali 76, however if I co1uld achieve the same tone with comp 1 on the slide + a little Dry signal, then I would def take the Slide Rig just to be able to hold that crazy sustain!!!
Great question: the sustain knob would be the equivalent of the "Input" knob on an Origin pedal. Those 2 knob compressor have a preset ratio, attack and release :)
Very nice demo. A questions. You did not demo either one with a overdrive tone. I would think both would be good for a more rock and roll type tones. But would you recommend one over the other to check out first?
Great demo Jay! I have the cali76 and was wondering the difference between this and the slide rig... I think I’m just gonna get the slide rig too lol Thanks man! Great stuff!
Slide Rig is pretty much a pre dialed in Cali76 with the ability to stack another pre-dialed Cali76 with it. Not as tweakable, but has all the sustain and sweetness you would every want :)
I have a slide rig compact deluxe AND a Revival drive. Would you put the slide rig before or after the revival. Your channel is my go to place for great reviews. Long time subscriber!
They are the same knobs you will see on a Gibson '61 SG Reissue. I had to change my pots to make them work, but they are the perfect size for the Tele control panel
The EP and Ego are OTA style compressors that have a little more coloration in the EQ as well as a slight bass roll off. The Cali76 is an FET which has more full range response and a very different feel overall. That being said, the EP and Ego are amazing pedals as well: it is really down to what sound you are going for.
Literally just bought a compressor. I thought I’d use it to push a distortion pedal but nope. It makes it noisy and just too much. I’m just going to use it alone. I thought it would work since it’s set up in let’s say a kemper and works fine with it. Anyway. Great demo as always :Funkster. Mainly got it for the funk.
Yeah, compressors can be quite touchy in placement. For me, I like to use studio style compressors (Origin, Keeley Pro, Empress) and put it near the end (right before the delays and verbs). I use it as a general smoother and a fun way to boost my solos in a very clean and natural way.
Iv tried a few others and the guys i lookup to like chris buck ,daniel stienhert urself , mick taylor n theres more ,but a cali 76 has been the 1 . And not suprised thats ur on board comp. I just orderd 1 if its good enuf for u guys , then im in .
Hey Jay, just wanted to say another great vid like usual! Also wanted to say how awesome a company Origin Effect is...I don’t use a compressor, but they actually follow me on Twitter...(Me? Lol I was so honored and they have been so nice!!) I’ve been doing more metal stuff lately, but I’m getting back into more of the rock/grunge kinda stuff, and have been using clean tones more often...So I’m starting to think that I should be getting a compressor, and whenever I do, I’m definitely going with Origin!! I’m switching out my pickups on My G&L Legacy Strat to Klein Epic 69 neck and middle pickups, with a Duncan Custom Shop Lil 78. Then I finally got a Tele!! I’m waiting on a set from Klein..Got the Epic Esquire Bridge, and the “Early 50’s” neck...Thinking they will be killer combos! Just wanted to let you in on something I’ve been playing with that I think you’d love(hell, awesome Norwegian Wood interpretation!!! Love it) I got an Xotic Effects Stereo x blender...So I’ve been playing both the Supro Coronado that I recently got along with the Marshall tsl60! Actually went all out and have 2 nos Mullard CV4004s in v1&2, a Raytheon 7729 hifi 12ax7 in v3 and a Genalex Gold Lion 12ax7 in v4(phase inverter) Seriously sounds like a completely different amp in an amazing way! And being able to play both together with a different fuzz going to each amp...Lol it’s heaven man! Playing two different amps in stereo with an Empress Effects Echosystem is awesome too, having the repeats going from one amp to the other...has opened up a whole new dimension I never thought of before! Thought it may be something you’d like! Think of one side a Plexi, the other side a American style! I’d do the Cali 76... Just sounded to me like it would be what would be more beneficial to me...If I had to say, I’d say more transparent to my ears...They are a great company, I’ve had messages with them asking about compressors and they’ve been so responsive and honest!(like saying that because at the time I was doing more metal, a compressor wasn’t really a fit...)Like not trying to push something on someone when they don’t need it, that’s the mark of a stand up company! I’ll definitely be getting my first compressor from them! Just gotta wait until summer, in the small business off-season, so not enough dough to be able to get new stuff for a few months :(
JayLeonardJ I appreciate the kind words! Definitely doesn’t compare to how professionally done all of your videos are! Just a bit of fun and luckily the iPhone 7s actually is pretty decent when recording! Love Origin, glad to see you give them the props they deserve for their great pedals, and just being awesome people too!! Thanks Jay😄
JayLeonardJ sorry to ask, but I just put up a little “ambiance session” using the Echosystem and the Marshall and Supro, and while I know it’s not at your professional standard of recording, I think it turned out pretty well and was hoping you might enjoy it!? ruclips.net/video/vypRKJE8WEc/видео.html I’m not asking for any plugs or anything, just thought it’d be something you would like, and kinda shows how cool the Echosystem, plus using it in stereo, really is! Hope you’ll enjoy!
I play a jazzmaster, baritone, and a bass vi. Would the slide rig be more useful for all three or the deluxe? I'm leaning towards the slide rig because the stacked compressors sound great but I'm worried about the noise floor with that amount of compression.
You will definitely hear a higher noise floor, but they've tamed it to the point where it is about as loud as my old DynaComp. Both will keep you happy. If you need that sustain, you can't go wrong with the SlideRig!
My wife is gonna leave me and take the kids because I keep buying all the pedals you recommend! LOL! Oh well I’ll get this too. You know J I’m actually considering this for my acoustic rig. I use a soundhole pick up where I run all my pedals through. I run a seperate pickup which is the K&K trinity and it’s dry to keep that acoustic feel. The soundhole just sounds so thin. No matter how I eq it. Maybe this would help. Thoughts? Thank you for being amazing bro

Hey Jay, quick question if you don’t mind. I know you’re a busy guy. So, one of the main reasons I’m upgrading to the Cali76 is for the quality of the compression but also for the nice clean sustain. I know the slide rig has extra sustain due to the 2 compressors running is series ( or parallel..?? ) but to be honest I really likes the aesthetics of the Compact Deluxe and the whole color changing jewel thing lol So essentially my question is this, can you get that monster sustain from the Compact Deluxe and would some light transparent overdrive help to make up for anything the Compact deluxe is lacking compared to the Slide Rig in the sustain department. Thanks Jay....big fan of your videos for a while now....
Good hearin ya, only I wish you had demonstrated the "slide" more w/ these rigs, thats the REASON I tuned in...I play slide, big fan of Little Feat and Lowell George, who this pedals slide tone/style was initially designed to replicate...Im speaking SPECIFICALLY of the Slide Rig itself, not the other pedal...I recorded recently w/ the bass player from Little Feat, he had a lot to say about Lowells tone but I wanted to hear this with A SLIDE...you just played 3 notes...next time please play more or hire a slide player if you dont play bottleneck
Wife runs away cause you spend too much of your money to gear. Instead of let her to spend your money for shoes and stuff. Just kick her ass.... and buy another pedal ...
Thanks for making such an awesome demo, Jay! You've really captured what these pedals can do for your tone. Even after all these years we can't choose between the Cali76 and the SlideRIG!

Haha, miss you bro!
you ever do a fat rail of coke and then make a gear demo?
Seinfeld!
Wife runs away cause you spend too much of your money to gear. Instead of let her to spend your money for shoes and stuff. Just kick her ass.... and buy another pedal ...
