My uncle died of AIDS in 1990. I was closest with him, I was told he died of Cancer. My grandparents told everyone it was cancer. I found out in the early 2000s that it was AIDS and my grandparents lied to “save face”. Fucking heartbreaking. I got to see him just before he passed and though my memory is fuzzy, I remember how bad he looked, I remember him gasping with an oxygen mask on hugging me and giving me stickers from the nursing staff in the pediatric wing. My uncle on his deathbed asked for stickers for me, so he could give me a gift one last time. ❤️❤️❤️
That's so heartbreaking, I'm so sorry that happened to you and your uncle
So sad poor man RIP
(hugs you)
May he rest in peace and much love to you
Aids seems unnatural to me..made for business like most other diseases
To think this was actually going on at the start of my parents’ lifetimes - ONLY 70 odd years ago! The mind boggles...
It's crazy how much things change in such a short amount of time
I had never learned about the Lavender Scare before. Thank you, Georgia. This was highly educational, fascinating, and heartbreaking.
I had known that homosexuals were targeted during McCarthyism, but had not heard of The Lavender Scare. Thanks for posting!
I haven’t heard of it either. Nor 99% of what I get to learn from Georgia’s channel.
Another topic you've covered that I've never heard of. Glad you're here on youtube covering things like this because you do it so well!
I wished I'd known of this while teaching! It would have been a great lesson for my middle school students - there were a lot who struggled a lot with their sexuality and identity, and I'm sure it would have helped! I will do it next time! Thanks, Georgia!
The first openly LGBTQ+ politician in government in Norway sat from 1977-1985. She came out in 1979. A very brave woman. She met her partner in 1977 and they were together until she died in 2016.
Thank you for covering this. I am a bit ashamed for having no idea this went on- and continues in other guises.
My daughter told me the other day she felt I ruined her coming out story. I asked her why? I felt so bad, this girl told me it was because I was so accepting and told her how happy I was for her and how proud I was. 😂 I apologized that it wasn't as climatic as she wanted but I'm bisexual and she knows it. I don't know what she expected but apparently a long hug and words of praise and acceptance and love wasn't it which is what she got. We laugh about it but all the horror story's of others experience I guess got her thinking that's how all parents react which mad me vary sad.
Georgia, you've taken PRIDE to a new level this month! Never in my life have I felt so proud to identify as queer!! 💗 😂
hahahaha mission accomplished!
I can’t believe we never learned about this in history class or anything! I was raised in the south so I guess it is t that hard to believe, but still! Thanks for posting ❤️
Thanks for putting up all these videos Georgia , I've been watching heaps of them and I am learning so much :)
Im grateful iv grown up in a town that is really accepting and i only had a few problems when I came out at age 14
When you said he passed on National Coming Out Day, I straight up burst into tears.
As a queer leftist woman, I’m so grateful to everyone who sacrificed their comfort, reputation, and safety to fight for our rights. We carry the torch and continue to fight. ✨
Hello lovely! Another great video. So happy to be here. Bout to learn some more history!!
Congratulations on 200K subscribers. So deserved. Thank you for what you do 💖💖
so excited for this video! seems really interesting :)
Hope you like it!
Thanks for the video Georgia 🤘💯
Thank you Georgia❤ i love learning with you...youre a great storyteller and teacher
You are so welcome!
I really love that you have taken this month to help educate people on topics related to the LGBTQ community! I have been wanting to educate myself more on this topic and it’s super helpful that you are making these!
When you see there's some people that can't handle you doing these videos then you know you've succeeded Georgia 😅
I was late to the party when it happened, so congratulations again on coming out Georgia! Looking forward to this video as I don't think that this is a very well-known part of our history- please would you consider covering the lives of LGBT activists and authors such as Lillian Faderman (my personal hero) in the future?
I’m sorry but I laughed at Pete “BOOT-IH-GEE” 😂
Thanks again for a fantastic episode! Shared on Facebook.
Omg. This is crazy!! How the hell is this ok???? I know if was a different time.. buuut hell no!! This is soo messed up!
I thought I’ve seen every odd names from thumb nail tittles but I’ve never thought that I would see the lavender scare
Your skin looks soooooo smooth and healthy
thank you!
Much love ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
I am so thankful for these videos! I'm loving learning about the LGBTQ+ community
Judging by reactions I've met when discussing worker's rights and our public healthcare system here in Norway, many Americans are still deathly afraid of anything on the left side of politics. Even if it leads to bad conditions and low wages, and people going bankrupt over healthcare bills.
A lot of them still think wanting basic human rights (like universal healthcare) is communism and bad :/
Its really sad that a country considered one of the great world powers has one of the worst healthcare systems and welfare system. Its so sad :(
Georgia, I saw your post on Twitter yesterday. I haven't been getting any of your videos recommended to me in the last month.
Important to note: homosexuality did not fully disappear as a mental illness/disorder in America until 1983. Between 1973 and 1983,
it was changed to "sexual orientation disturbance" as a compromise between those in the APA who voted to abolish and those who
voted to retain homosexuality as a mental illness. Before 1983, other countries had fully abolished homosexuality as a mental disorder.
I’m still terrified there might be a gay hiding in my house when I get home at night. I hear they like to hide in closets. I always check under my bed before going to sleep.
Congratulations on 200k!
I hadn't heard of this before! Absolutely awful!!!! This makes me so upset, that just because of who they loved that they tried to remove them......it makes me sick! EVERYONE DESERVES LOVE NO MATTER WHO THEIR PARTNER IS! Aint nobody's business but those in that relationship! Ugh!
Love Georgia Marie!❤
Early gang! Love your history videos and you!
I totally didnt know abt this so thank u sm and good luck to u and ur gf y'all deserve the world! I love to see queer ppl happy, proud, and successful.💖
I’m part of the LGBTQIA+ community and I had never heard of this before! Thank you ❤️
Thank you!
so much change for those of us in the rainbow community the rainbow flag was created the same year i was born which was 1978 people used to ask me in the 1990s why had they removed it as a mental disorder in the 1970s and i always said because it was never a mental disorder it was only listed as one because of homophobia great video as always
You're bringing amazing content during pride month and I'm very grateful for it. Thank you! 💞
Congratulations on 200k
What an amazing documentary while I was aware of the way gay people were treated in the US in the past I'd not actually heard of the lavender scare
Heyyy Georgia 🥰
One quick note… he wasn’t the first openly gay cabinet member, he is actually the second (still amazing!) the first was Richard Grenell he was appointed as the acting director of national intelligence under Trump in 2019(I believe that was the year) I don’t want to get political as it shouldn’t have taken this long either way but don’t want Richard Grenell to get lost.
just a small suggestion, maybe you could also say your name in the beginning, like "if youre new here, welcome, my name is georgia" because i think a lot of (new) people like that :) but no pressure obviously
Also remember, public educators are considered government workers. So I definitely wouldn’t have had a job for instance.
I'm enjoying your Pride month videos! Just FYI, Buttigeig is pronounced "But-edge-edge".
THANK YOU SO MUCH NO I NEVER HEARD ABOUT THIS CASE SHAME ON ME
Thanks for these videos, they are really insightful. I already knew that McCarthy was a nasty character (and I probably wouldn't have been popular in the 'States back then myself), but man, that's some _Animal Farm_ level shit right there. I find this really puzzling - it was only a few years after the war and its atrocities, said book would have been out since 1945... wouldn't people have noticed what was up? Well, some would I guess, but perhaps a certain anti-intellectual sentiment was doing the US no favors... assuming that was as much of a factor back then as when it helped a certain orange _Punk President®_ get to power in more recent times.
Boy do I ever feel lucky for having grown up without ever having to face anything remotely amounting to severe discrimination, in spite of being a bit of an oddball on the autistic spectrum with a disability. From all I've learned over the years, _it could have been so much worse._ (Mind you, I could have done with a bit of negative feedback here and there. Speaking of which, negative feedback in fact is so useful that I can only recommend studying some control theory to anyone interested in keeping complex systems on track, regardless of whether that's an audio amplifier or a company. Even Gay Pride is, strictly speaking, applied negative feedback. I suspect if you need to describe real-life macroscopic developments you may also require some chaos theory.)
Secretly gay men leading the chase for homosexuals has got to be one of the saddest things ever. 💔 What kind of person do you even have to be to go out specifically to make other people's lives hell? Well, miserable and hateful for one, and probably sadistic to boot. These are the kind of traits you'd associate with the likes of diehard Nazis, Stasi prison officials and _particularly charming_ dictators. Now lack of societal acceptance may well have contributed to such traits, but at the end of the day it shows that evil may lurk in all groups of society (and I am sure that our trusty WWII history would turn up some examples again... in fact I think Mark Felton has mentioned some, but don't ask me where, I can barely remember the gist of things). Messy business, this being human stuff.
Not wanting to finish on such a grim note, I'll say that at least our charming host is a fundamentally decent, good human being, and I do appreciate that. 👍
_EDIT: Wrong Orwell book - d'oh_
Please do an episode on frank!!
I'm glad changes were made, but we still have a long way to go. I'm still hopefully for America....
w the first syllable of "magellan" in megellanTV, i *REALLY* thought you're going to say that the video is sponsored by Mc-fucking-Carthy.
haha!
LIKE ALWAYS YOU LOOK SO GOOD PLEASE COULD YOU DO A VIDEO ON BLACK DAHIA OR ELIZEBTH SHORT MANY THANKS
You are right, I've never heard of the Lavander scare. I am, however, fully aware of McCarthyism. I have been a long time advocate for gay rights, however, what's happening today, especially with what seems like the erasure of women and women's rights, I can't help but draw a parallel with McCarthyisum. The way you described McCarthyisum is exactly how the progressive or "woke" people act today. You must conform to the almost daily changes they deem for good, and use the good old communist fist to show you conform. Yes history is extremely important to not only investigate but to learn from. Not to twist and reuse. Thank you for the content.
You didn't just equate advocating for transgender rights with McCarthyism, did you? Giving a group of people rights they didn't have before does not negate women's rights (which are still advocated for, women are just not the only oppressed group under patriarchy). And don't try to argue that that wasn't what you meant. The dogwhistle was deafening.
@@allyas You will enterprete my comment from your point of view. How neat that you were deafend by a dog whistle, which you made up, through reading my comment! How about you focus on that incredible make believe talent instead of the make believe patriarchy.
Just commenting for the algorithm 💚
Good old McCarthy. Soooo proud to have him as another part of our shit history. 🙄
America isn't real, just a fictional place. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you or any other characters in your story
I wish they would teach about more than just cis-het white men in school !!!
Georgia, I cant seem to find either of your recommendations on MagellanTV and the 'recommendation and MagellanTV’s exclusive playlists' link in your description brings me to a 404 page 🙁 Would you be willing to share links your recommendations? 🤞🙏
Yes I will! Over the weekend I'll compile a list of some favourites and reply to this again - tweet me if I forget!
@@georgiamarie_ Thank you! 💖
I'm a communist and queer. I love your videos on gay history. Thank you very much for making these videos ❤️
I didn't know about the "purple scare" I do have to worry about the actual lavender plant bc im highly allergic to it n thats all it should have ever been looked as. There r still ppl who think being gay is a mental illness n that God wont love them! Thats jiat ridiculous to me. I had a beat friend who I grew up with who knew she was gay when we were kids n I never looked at her any different. It's even interesting that you Georgia say Queer bc how I grew up that isn't nice to say but I chalk that up to being in different parts of the world. It is ignorant any of this even happened IMO! Idk how a gay peraon working in the Government would've been more likely to share secrets. I just don't understand it!
Whoop! Love these pride month videos 🌈🌈🌈
Sorry we don’t claim him!
Georgia being the gay icon that she is.
I had heard a little about this but didn’t realize how much I didn’t know! Thanks for educating us all during Pride Month! 🌈🌈
i love you
