    My uncle died of AIDS in 1990. I was closest with him, I was told he died of Cancer. My grandparents told everyone it was cancer. I found out in the early 2000s that it was AIDS and my grandparents lied to “save face”. Fucking heartbreaking. I got to see him just before he passed and though my memory is fuzzy, I remember how bad he looked, I remember him gasping with an oxygen mask on hugging me and giving me stickers from the nursing staff in the pediatric wing. My uncle on his deathbed asked for stickers for me, so he could give me a gift one last time. ❤️❤️❤️

    The first openly LGBTQ+ politician in government in Norway sat from 1977-1985. She came out in 1979. A very brave woman. She met her partner in 1977 and they were together until she died in 2016.

    My daughter told me the other day she felt I ruined her coming out story. I asked her why? I felt so bad, this girl told me it was because I was so accepting and told her how happy I was for her and how proud I was. 😂 I apologized that it wasn't as climatic as she wanted but I'm bisexual and she knows it. I don't know what she expected but apparently a long hug and words of praise and acceptance and love wasn't it which is what she got. We laugh about it but all the horror story's of others experience I guess got her thinking that's how all parents react which mad me vary sad.

    Judging by reactions I've met when discussing worker's rights and our public healthcare system here in Norway, many Americans are still deathly afraid of anything on the left side of politics. Even if it leads to bad conditions and low wages, and people going bankrupt over healthcare bills.

    Important to note: homosexuality did not fully disappear as a mental illness/disorder in America until 1983. Between 1973 and 1983,
    it was changed to "sexual orientation disturbance" as a compromise between those in the APA who voted to abolish and those who
    voted to retain homosexuality as a mental illness. Before 1983, other countries had fully abolished homosexuality as a mental disorder.

    Thanks for these videos, they are really insightful. I already knew that McCarthy was a nasty character (and I probably wouldn't have been popular in the 'States back then myself), but man, that's some _Animal Farm_ level shit right there. I find this really puzzling - it was only a few years after the war and its atrocities, said book would have been out since 1945... wouldn't people have noticed what was up? Well, some would I guess, but perhaps a certain anti-intellectual sentiment was doing the US no favors... assuming that was as much of a factor back then as when it helped a certain orange _Punk President®_ get to power in more recent times.
    Boy do I ever feel lucky for having grown up without ever having to face anything remotely amounting to severe discrimination, in spite of being a bit of an oddball on the autistic spectrum with a disability. From all I've learned over the years, _it could have been so much worse._ (Mind you, I could have done with a bit of negative feedback here and there. Speaking of which, negative feedback in fact is so useful that I can only recommend studying some control theory to anyone interested in keeping complex systems on track, regardless of whether that's an audio amplifier or a company. Even Gay Pride is, strictly speaking, applied negative feedback. I suspect if you need to describe real-life macroscopic developments you may also require some chaos theory.)
    Secretly gay men leading the chase for homosexuals has got to be one of the saddest things ever. 💔 What kind of person do you even have to be to go out specifically to make other people's lives hell? Well, miserable and hateful for one, and probably sadistic to boot. These are the kind of traits you'd associate with the likes of diehard Nazis, Stasi prison officials and _particularly charming_ dictators. Now lack of societal acceptance may well have contributed to such traits, but at the end of the day it shows that evil may lurk in all groups of society (and I am sure that our trusty WWII history would turn up some examples again... in fact I think Mark Felton has mentioned some, but don't ask me where, I can barely remember the gist of things). Messy business, this being human stuff.
    Not wanting to finish on such a grim note, I'll say that at least our charming host is a fundamentally decent, good human being, and I do appreciate that. 👍
    _EDIT: Wrong Orwell book - d'oh_

    You are right, I've never heard of the Lavander scare. I am, however, fully aware of McCarthyism. I have been a long time advocate for gay rights, however, what's happening today, especially with what seems like the erasure of women and women's rights, I can't help but draw a parallel with McCarthyisum. The way you described McCarthyisum is exactly how the progressive or "woke" people act today. You must conform to the almost daily changes they deem for good, and use the good old communist fist to show you conform. Yes history is extremely important to not only investigate but to learn from. Not to twist and reuse. Thank you for the content.

    • @allyas
      @allyas 3 года назад +5

      You didn't just equate advocating for transgender rights with McCarthyism, did you? Giving a group of people rights they didn't have before does not negate women's rights (which are still advocated for, women are just not the only oppressed group under patriarchy). And don't try to argue that that wasn't what you meant. The dogwhistle was deafening.

    I didn't know about the "purple scare" I do have to worry about the actual lavender plant bc im highly allergic to it n thats all it should have ever been looked as. There r still ppl who think being gay is a mental illness n that God wont love them! Thats jiat ridiculous to me. I had a beat friend who I grew up with who knew she was gay when we were kids n I never looked at her any different. It's even interesting that you Georgia say Queer bc how I grew up that isn't nice to say but I chalk that up to being in different parts of the world. It is ignorant any of this even happened IMO! Idk how a gay peraon working in the Government would've been more likely to share secrets. I just don't understand it!
