This was mine and my Dad's song. Today is Father's day and makes 9 months since he went to heaven 😇💔 I love and miss you so much Dad! Happy 1st Father's Day in heaven 💙
I interviewed this band. I was so surprised at their education, EMERSON and ability to score music. Oh and BTW , their Dad is a pastor. How odd and fascinating just the same.
To me, this song's lyrics are like an awakening of someone who had been used by a lover. He's finally realized that she doesn't care about him, but that she keeps hanging on -- expressing doubts and thinking aloud that she was wrong -- only she's doing it for selfish reasons. Like a person (guy or girl) who's so full of him- or herself that they want everyone to adore them, even when they've broken up already. The singer is saying, just spit me out -- I've moved on, I don't need your fakeness (ambience and vanity), I don't need that pain or you anymore. Someone else here put a Biblical spin on the lyrics, which I also think is a great point of view!
One biblical outlook is, no one can keep a promise, but God. The human condition is vulnerable to many evils. I agree it is about the awakening to the truth of the end of a relationship. One always lived in vanity and felt the sun rises and sets on them. The other is waking up to this truth, and has no interest in a one sided relationship with this person a minute longer. Basically, don’t even speak my name, as there is no point in doing so.
Awesome song !!! One of the last really good bands to come out of the nineties ! So much better than the garbage you hear today !!! Killer melodies and lyrics !!! Love Collective Soul !!!!
So beautiful. I remember listening to this in my car, cruising down the west coast, my youngest was maybe eleven, twelve?? He’s going to be 40 in November. I can’t help, but cry. Been there. Happy to still be here. Life is full of ups and downs. When I’m overwhelmed, I just ask God to carry me and we get through it together. I’m never alone. He helped me raise my boy’s and he helped me keep my glue together 😃😇. Nobody’s perfect. There, but by the grace of God, go I. That’s somewhere in the bible, but it’s applicable to me and anyone who wants to receive God’s grace. Tomorrow’s another day. But, if you’re still in the swamp of sadness, remember this: Psalm 139:verse 13 to 16. Please know how precious you are, each and every one of us. Have a super duper day ❤
I just can't put a finger on it, but this song makes me feel a certain way. It's like being overwhelmed by emotion. Not love, not pain, not sadness, not happiness, just a certain way..
I first heard this song in the summer of 1995 . . . my heart was breaking over a boy and this song resonated with me during that time. I'll never forget it or how I associate it with that point in my life.
I love Collective Soul, as they have a very original and creative sound, thought provoking lyrics, and they don't feel the need to spew filth in their music. Clean, yet profound, lyrics. They are Christians and you can tell from the music they create. :)
This song has a spiritual meaning. Jesus said, " you are neither hot nor cold, so I spit you out of my mouth". I believe the song is a reaction to that statement.
Hello...I am 70+... and just today wanted to see the Lyrics to this Tune that I have adored for such a long time* I TOTALLY agree with YOU*. As I listened and read the Lyrics .. it was almost Magical...my next thought was..there's a hidden Message in this Song from "whomever" is in charge. Each question...seemed to come straight from "God" , as if He* is sad about how we are handling the "Free Will" He* gave us. Peace be with You*
Maybe they took that line as a small bit of inspiration, and perhaps few others, but this isn't a spiritual song. Not one for the sake of religion or spirituality, anyways.
This song has such a heavy, indescribable feeling to it. Of a time long past. Wish I was old enough to have appreciated the 90's more. Alas I was only 8 by the end of that era. Now at 30, it seems a lifetime ago. Amazing band and song!

One of the best shows I've ever seen. The kicker is it was 5 or 6 years ago at Ribfest in Fargo, ND. Man was well past his prime and still nailed it. Phenomenal show

My Dad used to love this song. We would always jam out to it in his truck when I was a kid. I Forgot all about it until today. My coworker who is in his 50's was listening to it and it reminded me. My dad's been dead for 11 years now and I'm now 30 crying in my car listening to it.
it's okay bro. im 30 and my mom died 5 years ago and I still cry over her. hang in their bro we will see then again someday. I don't believe in God but there has to be siemthing else out there ya know?
Stay strong Kyle. I know you miss him. He misses you but he will always be there for you in spirit. I'm sure he'll want you to carry on with your life because of the love he has for you.
As a child December was one of the best times of the year! As an adult with severe depression and anxiety it's pretty just another cold dark jurry month. so the ending lyrics are so oddly fitting... the child like wonder is no longer there......gone are the days of chipper me singing Rudolph and Frosty in the car all December long ..... Thank you for the compliment. And yes, this one is hook after hook. I am a writer and I play (bass and piano), privatized amateur style though, lol. No polished formal training or anything like that. It's just that music and the intense dissection of it has simply been a passion of mine since 1985.
