"Might as well start digging me a hole"⎜CEO of Surfing WA, Mark Lane, on his skin cancer experience

Introducing the brilliant Mark Lane; skin cancer survivor, and CEO of Surfing WA.
Mark’s love for surfing began as a boy on a little foamie at Scarborough Beach; but unfortunately, he learnt much later in life that the endless hours of sun exposure in the water add up.
Since being diagnosed with Stage 3 Skin cancer in 2018, Mark has endured surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy; and even now, in remission for the fourth time in four years, he still undergoes fortnightly treatment.
Though he remains actively involved in surfing, Mark emphasises the necessity to modify behaviour and activities if you’re spending a long time in the sun. From sunscreen, long-sleeved wetsuits, and broad-brimmed hats, to seeking shade whenever possible and avoiding sun peak hours of 10am-3pm, Mark has ensured that the SurfingWA ethos is first and foremost driven by sun-smart decisions.
