Sir, you really are one of the best teachers I have ever seen. You explain everything not by only words, but you make us see every single component, this makes a really huge impact on the efficiency of your teaching. I watched all the deep dives of the prius transaxle and all of your other videos about hybrid vehicles and I can really say that I've not been bored for a single second, my interest just kept growing. The funny thing is that I'm studying electronic engineering, so for my studies I really don't care at all about cars, I keep watching your videos just because you make the understanding of everything so easy and simple that for me it's just impossible to not being interested. Thank you a lot for your work!
I agree with the OP, grade A+ Teacher. I'm not even studying Electrical Eng, but I am going to buy a hybrid soon, and I am a do it yourself type guy. I now would be 100 percent confident fixing or refurbishing one of those battery packs. Is there a way I can contact you, I have some questions that are beyond the scope of this video I believe you could answer?
Also, in reference to that bus bar strip you said we can order, I was wondering how much a set of those cost? Third question, about how long till the bus bars corrode to the point they will need to be dealt with? Thanks in advance. O', and I liked your video, and subbed just off this one video.

Exceptional. I've searched youtube and google for information about the specifics regarding the hybrid system and your video is the only one to address this. It's refreshing to come away from a video actually knowing something that has to do with what I'm looking for, especially when so many people post up opinion based videos without real content. I laud your work as you provide a real service. Thank you.
I love my RUclips teacher I dont need it but I get so interested in his speech and his teaching methods that I am intrigued he describes everything so thoroughly thank you professor
I salute you Professor John D Kelly. Watching your video on hybrid is like wow awesome. I've learnt about hybrid repairs right here. Your safety approach is at a very high level. I love this!!!
Thank you for your video lessons. I have ordered a 2021 Toyota Sienna XLE and have learned how the systems work, what to watch out for, what I should do, and what I should NOT do. I especially appreciated the video on the Rav4 Transaxle because I had no idea how the engine and MG's are interconnected. I was also happy to learn that the Toyota CVT design is all geared with no belt. People involved in Remote Learning should watch your videos. They could learn a lot by observing your approach and techniques, especially how you take time to thoroughly explain things.
Excellent! I have over 20 years experience in outdated electronics and experience with high voltages ( up to 4000 Volts ). I learnt a lot of useful information from your video. You've saved me a bit of guesswork when I'll have to check out the battery on my old Prius. UK based!
Thanks for the video .my dealer in jamaica was charging me $10,000us to fix my camry hybrid.after watching you I fix it myself for $0 only the busbars wanted to clean
Thank you for this thorough tour of the Toyota high voltage hybrid battery. It has helped provide options to consider while I decide what to do about the dying battery on my 2004 Prius with ~385K miles.
Great video! VERY INFORMATIVE!! I plan on becoming an instructor like yourself within the next five years. My body is not as forgiving as it used to be after 30 years of being a tech. I learned a lot just from watching how you break it all down and explain it in a way that makes it easy to understand. Thank you!
Excellent teaching video...I bought a new Toyota Auris Estate Hybrid four years ago which I am very impressed with. I am a retired power engineer in the commissioning of HV equipment and so I was keen to be enlightened with the engineering that has gone into these power systems which will inevitably take over from the present traditional transport systems.
You are a superb instructor sir, just found your channel. You have a new student. Thank you for your detailed and understandable lessons on different hybrid systems. We need more great knowledge givers like yourself.
Absolutely the best teaching videos I have seen on you tube. Very informative, and takes the mystery out of the hybrid systems. Than you very much for doing such a fantastic job.
Thank you Professor Kelly for a well detailed tutorial video.I am currently doing a course on hybrid electric vehicles and watching all your videos has been very helpful and educational in supporting my understanding of hybrid systems of my Toyota aqua.
I have even swapped kudos to your presentation with merchants and strangers when buying parts. HOWEVER, I must correct you on the availability of items you mention as Toyota's support of. No Voltage control unit to bus bar harness. It was available for 2009, but not for 2010 onwards, for Gen 3. I was happy to hear you saying it was available, only to be so disappointed in Toyota for rescinding it as a valid part number. A lot of the other looms are also "NO3" which means not obtainable. Got to buy the entire battery from Toyota (or go online to buy used). But my thanks and congratulations. You certainly are a great asset to all and sundry, I have to say. Me- an avid learner and shade tree mechanic, and a man with his ongoing hybrid Prius probs!
I'm a toyota technician in uk and just watch your video absolutely brilliant! . We have a Toyota estima which is a import with Hybrid fault ,P3000 info code123 ,also weak battery cell on Block 14 The battery will be replaced so thanks for sharing video
Professor Max Fm could not have said it any better. You are an excellent instructor. I was able to understand everything and every part that you covered it was amazing. You don’t need a Q & A at the end of your video because all of the material is so well covered and explain, that their aren’t any possible questions. Very impressive and entertaining video really enjoyed it. Thank You for putting your time into and posting an educational masterpiece. Louie IL USA 🇺🇸
Your detailed knowledge and willingness to share and explain so well is very much appreciated! I have a 2013 Lexus CT200h that has the Prius Gen 3 hybrid system. I now have a better understanding of the system and have the confidence to make better-informed decisions on any repairs that may need to be performed. My car only has 75,000 miles and I'm putting around 7,000 miles a year on it - zero problems with the car so far. At that rate, the car will probably outlive me! :)
Professor Kelly - Kudos for a fantastic video. SO well done. I just bought my first Prius and I thanks to your video instruction I am inspired begin teaching myself how to repair these batteries (my undergrad degree is electrical engineering so I know my way around electronics circuits). Thanks so much. You put a lot of effort into this video and it shows!
I see 96 dislikes. This video has a great value and it is free! Watching it, I cannot understand what is the reason for the thumbs down. In fact I am thinking to buy the online course. Very good comunication skills and a lot of pacience from the man. I really appreciate the professor for sharing this valuable free content. Good bless you professor Kelly !Greetings from Romania.
John, you are a fantastic teacher. Thank you for producing and uploading this video; it really helped me figure out an issue that I'm having with my Prius.
I just wanted to say that this is really interesting; I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Nice clean presentation, with meticulous explanations breaking down each part. Cool! Thanks for your time!
My Grandpa , Uncle and Dad were car guys from day 1 for me, they were great teachers like you, my Grandpa actually was a Principal of a High school, they subscribed to Road n Track, Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Hemmings motor news Hot Rod, 4 Wheeler and a few more! I got an invisible V 8 model as a kid too! I miss them.
This is an excellent, informative video. I wanted to learn more about the Prius battery after my car experienced problems. This was the best, most complete video I found. Well done WeberAuto!
Best video in the universe. I've replaced 5 modules at different times in my 2005 without gloves. Never seen any electrolyte. Never needed help to remove and replace. Got it down to 5 hours. Interesting to see the 2nd gen battery with the integral fan. Toyota dealers will now sell a new set of modules for $1950 with a $1350 deposit. But most owners will pay over 3k including labor or trade-in their Prius for a new one. I am a total DIY guy so my 3 Prii never see a dealer after purchase unless it's a recall or I need an alignment. I think the service plug grip is vertically mounted in the 2nd Gen. Yes, kill the 12 volt battery connection first, then pull the service plug next. I think that the 2nd Gen battery pack is easier to remove since the fan is remotely mounted and there is no Lock Striker. A good cleaner for the bus bars is Caig Deoxit D5 (www.caig.com) spray.Wire brushing decreases contact area. Bad.
Thanks for the feedback. Deoxit is good. I agree, a wire brush is too rough. 400 or 600 grit sand paper may be a good solution to the heavier corrosion.
Thanks Professor Kelly for such amazing tutorials on Hybrid Electric Energy Storage Systems. A very detailed, hands-on and thorough explanation of each subsystem. Hats off to you.
Congratulations on your wonderfully executed videos - each explanation is crystal clear! I wish you could make a video on how to properly recondition the HV Battery pack. There is so much conflicting information on this subject that I would really appreciate getting the definitive instructions from you!
A very nice and informative lecture. Thank you. The problem of corrosion around the nuts is due to the use of two different metals. Iron after copper in the direction of flow creates corrosion, due to the different molecular structure of the metals. The nuts have a further wave structure on the back to grip better in the copper. Electrons will flow evenly where there is contact, but in the waves the electrons will jump between two metals and form very small "sparks" that corrode the copper surface. It was clear that there was such a pattern on the copper that corresponds to the pattern on the nut. This is a known problem among water installers. My knowledge tells me that's part of the problem. Use copper nuts.
Thanks for the feedback. The corrosion was only occurring on the negative studs and nuts. Are the positive studs/nuts not corroding because of opposite electrical charges?
According to electron physics (galvanic corrosion) it is from metal with loosely bound electrons. The walk occurs when iron is after copper. In the electron flow direction. Therefore, it is the one pole that is corroded. On ships, zinc is used to deliver metal instead of the ship's iron hull.
I think you did a terrific job on this video! Very clear with a lot of information. I feel quite comfortable now to repair a hybrid battery. The video on how to check the transmission level on a late model MB was the opposite though. Thanks!
First and foremost great respect from you Sir. I am thank full and great-full for your precious video tutorial you shared. one of the best explanation ever saw. i would be proud to be one of your student. As i am in the field, your explanation boost up my knowledge as well, Keep it up!
Wow...very informative & through - thank u so much for taking time to explain the battery from A to Z. Dealing w a battery issue and busses are so corroded. DIYing it myself & best video by far!
May God bless you greatly, your videos are a great blessing to those in need. Thank you very much for such important information provided, we appreciate it very much and I think you are the best on RUclips, you are a great teacher. Muchas gracias...
This gentle man is genuinely professional and detail oriented. Do you have a video on 2007 Camry hybrid battery? I opened it with a lot of little mishaps, would love to replace and put it together as professionaly as you do with the help of a video.
I always thought that the batteries were cooled by the air conditioning system. At least this is what I read from automotive articles. It seems they were wrong and these batteries are simply ventilated by the cabin air regardless of ac system being on or off... I just hope that everyone could share some quality knowledge like you do. Especially automotive journalists.
There are many variations, but most hybrids have air cooled batteries as you described. Ford did have an Escape hybrid with its own A/C evaporator in the battery unit to remove heat. Electric vehicles with liquid cooled batteries also use a small evaporator/heat exchanger in the coolant to remove heat from the battery. Thanks for your feedback
So there is no hybrid system component that is directly cooled by the ac system? The same articles I read claim that the ac system in hybrids mainly cools the hybrid system and the interior cooling is just one of its options. So alegedly the driver is not to decide when the ac compressor is on or off, this is up to the computer. So in hot days the ac might be turned on even though the interior ac is turned off. Is it right?
I am not aware of any hybrid system component that is directly air-cooled by the A/C system, only the liquid cooled systems of electric vehicles and some plug-in hybrids like the Chevrolet Volt.
Thank you for all your responses. I might go back sometimes with more questions as I plan to go through all your videos on hybrid systems which I truly find fascinating and you happen to be the only reliable source I could find.
Excellent video! I wonder if the bus bar jumper corrosion is due to dissimilar metals. Looks like copper bus bars and steel nuts. A copper washer or brass nut might be a solution. Also when you connect batteries in series the current through each battery is the same. So even though you only have 15 volts on each battery pair a short circuit could be 100 amps or more. The danger is not a shock hazard but a burn hazard. Watch out for rings, watch bands, and tools even when handling a single cell pack.
This a great site for learning the ins and out of a subject that most of us consider best left only to the people who sell them! I think to be more confident and because there are far more on the roads and have undoubtedly proved how reliable they over the yrs i think the Prius is still the one to buy especially second hand ones when we have experts like this giving us a first class tuition on how they work. Something that never seems to be covered though is the petrol engines on these. Are they so reliable too that they dont need a mention !?
Excellent review Professor and thank you for your expertise!! I hope you can make troubleshooting videos on the High Voltage components, like the Converter/Inverter module.
The condensation can also corrode the sense contacts in the orange ECU plug. That is a fire source because the pins can short out and no fuses in the line. Always check it when you open the pack...
Omg! You are heaven sent! The knowledge you shared helped tremendously! Thank you thank you thank Sir!! Now I just have to gain my courage electrical anything and everything has ALWaYs made me feel uneasy no matter how assured I am the power is off! I hate to change a standard cars 12 volt battery at which I know the order to disconnect and connect ECT. I simply just don't like it! Now that my father has left life here (RIP best dad ever) I am left having to do myself so I need to suck it up buttercup and muster up the girl power so I can move forward.... I don't like mechanical issues! One I hope to be able to pay someone to do this task for me!!! I'm asking for good vibes PLEASE and trust this I greatly appreciate it!!!
Nice video... I just wish you would've shown actually taking apart the cells themselves (separating the modules from the case) and testing them.. And stating how to tell when a cell is bad vs good, and how to test a cell reliably. thx
@@WeberAuto I have 07 Camry where the all the three hybrid battery lights comes on and goes off , the power to the car and the mileage it’s gives does not change. Could you tell me what could be wrong ?
@47:26 listen to this man. that's the most important part of this video. If I had watched this video I would have saved $2000. I did everything right until it was time to put that bus bar on and I was not careful so it shifted by one slot accidentally and the whole bus bar was on fire and not just a pack because everything was shifted by one slot. I really think Toyota should have thought of some design to stop this from happening accidentally. No one could have explained the hybrid battery better. I mean you are a teacher after all. A good one. Thanks!

I will check my shop and write you on some other questions.
Thank you.
Thank you Sir....your works show that you really have a heart to teach....bless your heart.....
May God bless you greatly, your videos are a great blessing to those in need. Thank you very much for such important information provided, we appreciate it very much and I think you are the best on RUclips, you are a great teacher. Muchas gracias...
That was the best thing I did today. Thank you very much for the very informational video.
This gentle man is genuinely professional and detail oriented. Do you have a video on 2007 Camry hybrid battery? I opened it with a lot of little mishaps, would love to replace and put it together as professionaly as you do with the help of a video.
Thank you! I do not have a video for that battery.
brilliant , professional video on hybrid batteries..the best on youtube
Thank you!
Impressive explanation, kept me interested and learned far more than I expected. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent video , thank you very much for your efforts to make the subject more understandable.
Thanks
Thanks for this great video every Toyota Hybride driver should see. Verry interesting!
It is really an interesting video, we need more videos like this especially about the hybrid code errors like P0A7F.
Thank you! I plan on doing that
WeberAuto That's awesome and I can't wait for it.
WeberAuto thanks a lot for your efforts.
Great job you can tell you are a great teacher to break that down into simple forms thanks
Thank you for the outstanding information and theory of operation.
Thank you
Great tutorial on the hybrid battery! Well worth the hour. Thanks!
Thank you for your fantastic description of the battery!
Very elucidate and well explained!
Great job!
Tanks!
Thank you for putting so much time and effort into this video
I MO one of the best videos on You Tube, on this subject matter. Comprehensive and well done. Thanks once again 👍
Wow, thanks!
I like the way you look at things and explain them
Great video. I love all the labels, but my favorite was even the flashlight had a label.
Thank you! Label it or loose it to someone else ;)
Thank you so much, for all the details you've taught me.. Words are not enough.. again, thank you so much..
Thank you very much!
Hands down the best teacher on the web!
Excellent review Professor and thank you for your expertise!! I hope you can make troubleshooting videos on the High Voltage components, like the Converter/Inverter module.
Thank you! I am working on an inverter/converter video this week.
+WeberAuto cant wait for the video 😊
And stating how to tell when a cell is bad vs good, and how to test a cell reliably. thx
Thanks for your feedback
So happy to be yr student. You are the fascinate teacher l've ever see. So glad to learn from you .
Fantastic video! Thank you for posting! "I wish I had a garage setup like this! Perfect!"
Fantastic video. Thank you very much for all the knowledge passed on.
Thank you so much!!! Your video really help me, I’m very interested into the hybrid vehicle ❤️❤️
What a fun class. Thanks for sharing you are an excellent teacher.
Thank you
Thanks a lot. As always a lot of good information conveyed in perfect sequence and in a way I absolutely get it.
Thank you very much
@@WeberAuto I have 07 Camry where the all the three hybrid battery lights comes on and goes off , the power to the car and the mileage it’s gives does not change. Could you tell me what could be wrong ?
Dear sir
Wonderful video, excellent explanation. Wish to be your student.
Best regards
Moti
So nice of you, thank you
@47:26 listen to this man. that's the most important part of this video. A good one. Thanks!
