I find this actually quite sad. I used to go clubbing in Berlin in the early to mid ‘90s and I don’t remember there ever being strict door policy’s. In fact that’s why we loved to go there from Munich to get away from the ‘you have to have the right look’ culture. Berlin clubs seemed to embrace diversity and welcome everyone looking to have fun, dance and lose themselves in the music. Has it really changed? How disappointing. I am happy and lucky to have experienced it when I did. The idea of having to ‘look right’ to club makes me sick. Like going to the office.

Maybe because back in the days, there were not as many people interested in techno clubbing as today, so nowadays clubs have to have strict policy to handle huge international attention

    • @Lee_303

I can understand it. They want the "heads". Not the tourists. I've heard there's a certain amount of crime in clubs in Europe & a small percentage of that crept into the UK in particular the well known clubs in London. You don't want that. Also in London they've turned away small groups of males, purely because they don't want "sausage fest" as this dude spoke of here. It's a shame because those lads just wanted to go clubbing, but there you go. In the UK it's probably Gatecrasher that went to extremes with the door policy as they were turned on by the crasher kid (cyber kid) look but then got a bit funny as most of them were too blatant with the drugs & it went mainstream media.

If xou have been to berghain once, you would understand why this policy is so important! I dont want any munich P1 people there, just to prove the club is diverse. It would ruin the atmosphere. So, I totally understand and support the strict policy.

In 2009, I had the privilege of entering Berghain Club and enjoyed myself so much I was crying happy tears throughout the night. The Techno music was amazing, I was able to dance next to the huge speakers in which the vibration was powerful enough to bounce me away each time I danced into it. Don't forget when wanting to walk onto a crowded dance floors you don't have to push your way through, just use your hand & stroke the person downwards on their upper arm & they will gracefully make way for you to enter.

In my opinion, this is just marketing. Create exclusivity out of nowhere, just because they can, bouncer´s ego... I´d like to believe what you say but man, I´ve seen bouncers deny the entrance to people who completely knew the line up, really wanted to enjoy the music. Automatically, they accepted a bunch of tourists (I am a tourist myself) who didnt even know what was there playing. Maybe the theory is based on what you explain (I believed the same) but thats not reality come on

    • @ravanpee1325

Yes, keep the supply low so you can demand higher prices and make up a feeling of exclusivity.

Well nah, the thing with Berghain is that it's pretty bizarre in there, no cameras allowed and it serves to a "special" clientel and if they just let in everybody firstly it would be waaaaay overcrowded and secondly it would ruin the atmosphere in there.

Before coming from Chile to Berlin I saw some of your videos are entertaining, however, what I have learned by going to clubs from Berghain to Sisyphos, is your attitude and good vibes, if you arrive drunk you scream loudly and disrespect is sure that They will not let you in, if you are respectful and secure of yourself, even if you are the ugliest in the world, surely you enter, I saw it in Berghain that many people spent with the industrial outfit and very beautiful that were left out and others like me who were going alone if they could enter, in sisyphos the same groups of beautiful but drunk women fail to enter and I alone and with clothes that I use for the gym I can enter the club without problems, based on my experience I can tell them to be safe respectful and not afraid to say their origin, because at the door I even speak Spanish and everything has gone super

I Don't know, its difficult to judge. I believe that its moslty random + a little extra look on dress code. I've been clubbing for years already, been doing very dark underground raves in France (possession, Osho, bnk, organik, btf...) Where all styles are welcomed, as long as you like hard techno (i'm a great fan of deep industrial techno and trance music). So i've Seen things through the years and surely Berlin clubs aren't an exception. Actually liking the dark underground rave looks, i bought myself dark Berlin cloths, not because it "fits" the vibe but because i actually liked it. And i still got rejected in front of berghain. So being yourself isn't sometimes enough to get into a german club and berghain.
PS : try the french techno scene guys, we are catching up on Berlin (enormous raves, no dress codes, no discrimination, moslty created by LGBT+ and better music most of the Time). Its all about one thing : THE MUSIC !

I wish they were more clubs like this here in the USA sadly you can only find them in big cities is rare to find them in smaller cities.

I was born in Berlin. When I was still living in Berlin it was easy to get into the club. I've was never denied. I was everywhere: Felix, Berghain, Tresor, Soda, Alte Kantine, 40 Seconds, Astra, Maxxim, Kater Blau (former Kater Holzig), Ritterbutzke, Sissyphous, Piratis and even in the Matrix and worse the Kit Kat and many many small (very good) clubs. I've never dressed up special. Shirt, Jeans, sports-shoes. Everyone was funny, no stress, no voilence. Every single time it was a good time. So sad that my hometown is not the open, free city anymore. Berlin was famous for that. Go everywhere, everyhow, and do what you want.

If everyone does what they want, it creates violence because different people want different things. It's better that everyone knows what to expect ahead of time, so people can choose their experiences, deciding if they would feel comfortable with a specific club's behavior policy and if they want to dress in their style.

Because these clubs are not about you. They are about the atmosphere, the music and the act of dancing. Who you are is insignificant. When you enter one of these clubs, you loose your individuality to some extend and become part of something bigger, a little piece of the atmosphere. Past the bouncer, everyone is equal, both in enjoyment and their responsibilty to make the night memorable for everyone else. A club and it's crowd are inseperable. A "If you don't pamper me you won't get my money" type of Karen attitude simply doesn't fit this club scene.

There should just be a list of all places and what their style is so people know already where they fit in, most people wanna go to Berghain and probably wouldn't fit in at all and would just wait 3 hours to leave in 10 minutes lol people shouldn't think so much about the hype of the place but rather whether or not it's somewhere they fit in cause that's kind of the whole allure of clubs is that you can go to a place that attracts likeminded people.
That said i'm an old school punk so i'm very contrarian so i wouldn't go to ANY clubs tbh cause i think of them all as herd gatherings, i went to a punk bar once wearing a suit to throw off the regulars that was fun but apart from that i just chill with friends nowadays, also helps i'm too old for clubbing nowadays as i'm in my late 30s lol

You say the bouncers want to have a balance of males and females so that they all got a good time together by having proportionate number of potential partners for the party. That contradicts the previous statement of yours about lot of gay people partying together on the dance floor. What would gay people of any of the genders need to have a corresponding number of people of the opposite gender present for? It doesn't make a lot of sense. I am aware some of the gay people could be identified just by appearance, if they want to make a statement of their orientation by certain way of dressing and stylizing themselves, but it's not obvious with everyone.

You mean like the moron in Berghain who was going around needle spiking ? Their door policy is definitely not fool proof, it's more random. One of the reasons Berghain only accepts 2/10 is because there are thousands trying to get in and the club only has a certain capacity.

  • @Ultra_James__T

Can’t hold stating something you see everywhere in Germany. Funny how I saw plenty of brown people queuing up and dressed similar to those white people that got in but hardly any brown people inside. There’s no way a bouncer can judge whether a brown person can handle techno music and nudity - im sure everyone knows what they’re getting into. People say just because there’s black people and East Asian people inside that therefore Berghain cannot be racist or disproportionate negative racial bias as soon as they see a certain race - this is like fashion companies having ONLY black and East Asian models from minorities as a norm and think that’s enough to not be called racist is they disproportionally exclude every other race or ethnicity. It seems like they want to keep minorities minimal as possible under guises of potentially disruptive. Let’s face it if they excluded blacks and Chinese it would get mass bad press but who cares about the brown people as the media wouldnt care - racism is usually focussed on black/white so nothing to stop Berghain blatantly keeping brown people out. This is very wrong and whilst I get the need to keep a certain atmosphere, it surely did feel in any Berlin space that there is a grey area to discriminate on race as use a number of excuses to cover it. If you’re dressed correctly and are any white, fair Middle Eastern, East Asian and an American black you’re fine. If you’re a non-American black, Indian (even of a western nationality), Afghan, gypsy you’re screwed because even if you’re dressed like your counterparts, they’ve judged you by your race and decided to exclude you on the basis of a threat. If you look at all the gay bars Google reviews you can see how brown people are being made to feel othered in terms of bar staff being rude, unwelcoming, ignoring presence, constant whispers about them hoping they go away. I see the look of disgust as they even check out gay saunas. This is sad for a city I thought would know better to offset discrimination because it it’s not just about accepting Jews and white homosexuals; what about the gypsies that you see despised everywhere and have suffered a lot. What about everyone else. I know people are going to hate on me for saying the obvious just because they had so much fun, but please at least try to open your eyes about the suffering you’re causing other people by excluding them from many aspects of society - I’ve seen brown people not only discriminated at clubs, but also at school, interviews, jobs, as customers, as business etc it’s always a higher bar on them for the same standard. Anyone content that all has been done for racism and thinks these grey area rules aren’t abused need a reality check.

      18 yrs upwards: No restrictions.
Some clubs are 21+ only because they have negative experiences with younger ages.

You have to carry a writen paper by the parents that the adult has the parental supervision of you on their behalf. Clubs like Berghain, swinger clubs or clubs with darkrooms- where's much more sexual context than in a "normal music club" -may differ.
