I think the reason its so capable is it dispenses with a large cargo hold and troop compartment as well as the large fighter bay that the ISD had. Because the New Republic heavily used Snub fighters with hyperdrive they could afford to build ships that could not carry fighters and only had a small hanger bay. This allows the Nebula class to be much smaller and more compact. Its after all intended to give Star Fighter squadrons more fire support in long range missions without the extra logistics of sending an entire fleet.

That ship wasn't create by ILM but by Michael P. Kube-McDowell for Black Fleet Crisis trilogy. It's design come from legends, where NR never did something like decomision fleet.
Real nice comparision shot between the Nebula and Venator class. Gives a good scale of the Nebula since we know how big the Venator is in ways other then the length like we do with the Nebula. Just by Eyeballing it the Nebula looks to be bout 550 to 600 meters wide and bout 200 meters thick compare to the Venators 558 by 268. Do you have any still available of the side shots and the like?
Love or hate it, still more creative than the Xyston. I actually like the starhawk but not as a republic ship, always seemed more mandalorian to me in design. Loved the Nebula though, shame it never will exist in the new continuity.

Best guess is large star destroyers probably couldn't move around much due to bulk and potential to compromise the hull in a gravity well meanwhile a smaller victory could turn around even quickly in atmosphere without potentially compromising the hull. The Victory class however was supposed to, both variants.
I wonder about that as well. It seems, in Star Wars, there is air in the space. After all, even their hyperdrive lanes are limited to the galaxy only. And some people have superpowers through some sort of a "force".
Venator class. The class is the Venator not the Republic class. It was A Republic star destroyer but not THE (Republic class) star destroyer. The Acclimator and Victory classes were both also Republic start destroyers.
He’s referring to the Republic class star destroyer, which is a design by Walex Blissex that heavily took inspiration from Mon Calamari ships. Its an **extremely** ugly ship design.
Always loved the Nebula design. I think it's quite natural for the New Republic to adopt the power of the fearsome ISD with the similar cosmetic designs of former Republic starships.
so the nebula is supposed to always beat 1 star destroyer according to design goals, but it has 10 less heavy turbolaser batteries, 10 less turbolaser cannons (and they arnt heavies like the isd has), 2 less tractor beams, 12 less space fighters/bombers, and only gains 8 missile tubes plus an unspecified-in-video amount of pulse cannons that are "EQUAL" to a turbolaser. unless it has enough to make up for 10 batteries and 10 singles (from the video it looks likt it has 3 per side in a broadside configuration) the nebula loses in firepower in every aspect to the isd2 except for ion cannons, where it matches. L
Everytime I see something like this I just get angry at the Sequels all over again. They literally had everything they needed to make a great sequel series and they threw it all in the trash can and fed us a pile of crap. They could have done the Yuzhan Vong war and showed off all these new designs, they could have done Grand Admiral Thrawn, just set him later than in the books. They could have a new sith order deal, striking from the Unknown regions, they could have adapted the new jedi order series of books into movies and it would have been AMAZING. with a competent writer. But no. Instead we got a borderline unwatchable trilogy which has turned many star wars fans, including myself, off from the franchise entirely.
The sequels should have seen this ship face off against the first orders resurgent class star destroyer, another awesome ship (and frankly the one good thing to come out of the sequel trilogy)

The Venator is a starfighter carrier, not an actual ship to ship fighter. The old Republic used it the wrong way, so comparing the Nebula to the Venator is just unrealistic and stupid, considering that they were made for different tasks. One is a battleship, the other is a carrier.
Your efforts are really commendable. The Nebula design is beautiful. This side by side with Venator is a spectacle to watch. I want to see both of them together in some video fighting side by side.
There is an obscure Nintendo DS game called Infinite Space that features spaceship combat and management. An early faction in the game has ship designs and color schemes VERY close to the New Republic ships in this video.
Such a great design overall. A lot of thought went into it. Such as the armor coverage overlapping the hanger exits for the fighters. The bottom looks like it has the least about work done to it.
Really wished these ships became the backbone of the New Republic fleet, but Disney canon is seemingly content with creating another Mon Calamari ship whenever they want a big good guy ship. I mean, the New Republic *only* gained control of Imperial ship yards and access to their resources...it's not like using converted luxury cruisers after the war is their only option.
Built and produced at the worst of times, right after Thrawn and Rebirth, and well before the Yuuzhan Vong, and even then that wasn't enough to increase production. Damn shame.

But what troubles me most is how the First Order managed to secure a victory against the New Republic and it's fearsome fleets of technologically superior warships, I just can't see a proper victory without movie magic going against those odds. In the Mandolorian we got some hint that the reason the new republic fell is because of it eatting itself from the Inside and corruption began to go rampant. Regardless cool design hope we see it some way in a Live-Action series
It's canon that the New Republic started demilitarzing almost right after the peace was signed. The First Order (much as I dislike them) were a trained and well equipped war time force. As such the FO could reasonably divide and conquer weak and lax New Republic forces.
This ship, and the new class modernization program that it was born of (which modernized the entire new republic navy with many new modern designs) are all part of the extended universe, or legends, and is not part of the disney canon.

The Nebula is about 545 wide, while the Venator is about 525 wide based on my 3D model.

I'm always curious why they're concerned about aerodynamics in space, where this is no atmosphere or friction.

The Republic class the wiki is referring to there isn't the Venator, it's a New Republic designed ship.

It's one of my favorite Star Destroyer designs. It is so unique compared to most others.

An interesting thing I noticed about the Nebula is that its design aspects look similar to the Victory class, the Venator, and the Radier Class 2.
