Porto | Walk along South Bank of RIVER DOURO to Afurada and Cais de Gaia

  • A very nice day out from Porto in November is to walk downstream along the South bank of the Douro river. Visit the Cais de Gaia where all of the famous Port companies are located and continue to Afurada, a pleasant fishing village with a slow pace of life.
    The walk only takes about an hour each way but will probably take much longer as the views are impressive and you will stop to enjoy the scenery and soak in the atmosphere. There are a selection of fish restaurants in Afurada for lunch if fish is your thing.
    The beauty of this walk is that once on the river bank it is flat all the way which is quite a rare thing in Porto. There is a very good platform walkway for most of the route which keeps you away from the traffic.
    This is another great FREE day out in Porto which we recommend fully. Don't forget to take some swimming gear as there are beaches to visit further along the river!

    LOVE those old port boats. I've seen ancient archive footage on RUclips of those in action. Fascinating.

    I'm astonished to see that public washhouse. I have a feeling there is one in Lisbon too.

    The fish I had in Afurada is the best I had in Portugal. The meal we had was also shockingly cheap

    Great video guys, I've never been along that side of the river, cool to see. Weird about the price to visit the Port lodges, I've been to Porto about 5 times, and try to visit a different lodge every visit. I've never had to pay for a tour, wonder if that's a new thing.

      Thank you, Cindy, for your lovely comment! It was so interesting walking over that stunning bridge and along the other side of the river. Our friends, Two Creative Travelers ,were in Porto earlier this year and went on a wine tasting that was way cheaper... maybe it's the tour that's expensive? We'll look into it when we go back to Porto... I'm hoping we'll get a housesit there one day 😃😁 ~ Mandy

    The Washhouses are there to wash clothes principaly. They were needed because there houses where very small. Impossible to have a place were to wash there clothes, and they coudn,t afford to buy washmachines. Fishermen clothes were needed to wash every day so this places were created for that.

      @FrugalTravellers  3 года назад +1

      That's such a practical solution! We think the washhouses are a great idea - we saw one in Alfama as well! - Mandy
