Magellan had been to the region before and bought Enrique. They had both completed their circumnavigation before the rest of the crew returned to Spain as Pigafetta claimed. The point is that both of them had already completed half a cicumnavigation before they set off in 1519. Their start point was in the east, so it really doesn't matter if Enrique got back to his home or not. The definition of world circumnavigation does NOT necessitate using one ship only, nor that the journey need be continuous... It took Magellan almost 20 years to organise his return to the East.
In fact it doesn't mean by ship at all. It can be done by air, which I, among many others, have done; it can be done by land and sea combined, and in orbit. One restriction that was later suggested, especially with modern racing yachts, is the added requirement of passing through at least one pair of antipodal points but that is for race qualification purposes and the Guiness book of records of course. I feel certain that both Magellan and Enrique met these criteria as they had been to numerous locations in the East under Portuguese control before returning to Europe.
If you do your research you will see that both the SECOND and THIRD Spanish circumnavigations were also done with the (inadvertent) collaboration of the Portuguese, although it meant that the survivors were captured and BROUGHT BACK by the Portuguese to Lisbon before being allowed to return to their home countries.
Either way you look at it the first three circumnavigations, although funded by the Spanish court, could not have been done without the incredible knowledge of the noble Portuguese navigators. At that time the Spanish were barely able to muster the skils and manpower needed to pull off these sorts of expeditions. The Portuguese had already dominated the Indian ocean after destroying the combined Arab and Turkish navies in the famous battle of Diu. The huge fort they built still exists and is a marvel to behold.
The Loiasa and Vilalobos expeditions (the second and third trips) were interesting because Hans of Aachen, who survived the first journey and crewed on the second, therefore was the first DOUBLE circumnavigator - and he wasn't even Spanish.
Drake was the first successful commander to complete a single seabourne round trip that wasn't a DISASTER, as he left and returned in command of the same expedition. That's why we Brits are proud of him. The Spanish efforts by comparison were rather amatuerish and plagued with conflict and mutiny. El Cano and his motley crew were just lucky to return alive. Thankfully the Italian passenger Pigafetta was among them. His record eventually led to the rest of Europe recognising Magellan over Elcano.
So we don't know whether Enrique survived and got back home but I'm sure that he and Ferdinand were close enough to their start point in my book, although they did it in two separate journeys. It is clear in correspondance written in Portuguese that Magellan had voyaged extensively in the far east during his youth, under the Portuguese crown, this was when he met Enrique and took him on several voyages before returning to Europe. It was only because of his irrascible nature that the second trip was refused by the Portuguese king and that's why he turned to Spain for support. It was probably the underlying cause of his death. Pigafetta describes in detail the feelings he and Enrique had when Magellan died. Nevertheless he did not die in vain.
My point was that Ferdinand and Enrique both must have known that they were the first people to have circumnavigated the Earth for a fact and by personal experience, and that they were the ONLY two people to have completed a circumnavigation the moment they understood the local language near the Philippines.
This must have been an incredible moment, which set them apart from the rest of the crew. What a moment in history that was! It rivals and in my book even surpasses the feat of Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon!!!
Rmember, it was Magellan who conceived and planned the whole journey (together with his cousin who had also previously been to the spice islands) with a multinational crew and was in full knowledge of what he had done. Pigafetta's account makes this abundantly clear. That's why everybody remembers Magellan's name not the mutineer Elcano.
Unfortunately, being a slave, Enrique was swept into relative anonimity, until now. There is another podcast with the same title as this one, which seems to push the agenda that history has lied to us about Magellan and that Enrique was the only man to circumnavigate the Earth first. Unfortunately that is an inaccurate claim, however Enrique was certainly an intelligent and valuable addition to the crew with far more maritime experience than any of the Spanish crew, I certainly do not wish to detract from his enormous contribution but I hope that this explanation makes it abundantly clear that both Magellan and Enrique equally qualify for the honour of being the FIRST PEOPLE TO CIRCUMNAVIGATE THE GLOBE.
Fun fact: Upon the Victoria's return to Spain the ship's log (available to read with permission only in the Casa de la Contracion in Seville) contained an error of one day's discrepancy, also mentioned by Pigafetta, whose work is freely available online. Thus Ferdinand and Enrique were also the FIRST TIME TRAVELLERS in recorded history!

The most incredible thing about this voyage was Pigafetta's description of Magellan and Henry's reaction to meeting the spice islanders in their canoes. History hides the fact that it was not only Magellan but also his trusty manservant realising that only they were the first circumnavigators among the crew. They had both been there twenty years beforehand!
What an incredible moment that must have been to these two brave men. Pigafetta's description did not do justice to the moment but after returning to spain the records were set straight and their acheivements were acknowledged. That is why Magellan is still remembered, rather than the mutineer Elcano.
A discrepancy of one day in the ship's log was recorded, evidence of this is available in the Casa de la Contracion in Seville and Pigafetta's account is available free online.
Both Henry and Magellan were thus the furst time travellers!
There is another video with the same title suggesting that only Henry or Enrique was the first circumnavigator but ignores the fact that Magellan himself was also there and bought Henry at as a slave, while travelling to visit a relative in the spice islands. If you understand Portuguese you will be able to read the letters confirming this.
Allin all a very interesting video, IMHO better than the flawed Map Pack version. Well done❤❤❤

8:25 Nooo! That the world was round was a well know fact! They just confirmed what the ancient Greeks used to suspect, that there was another continent between Europe and the far east.

Just a little known fun fact, Van Aachen, a survivor of the first circumnavigation was also on the next circumnavigation, and was captured by the Portuguese and brought back to Lisbon with the surviving crew from this totally shipwrecked attempt, so inadvertently becoming the first man to circumnavigate the Earth TWICE😂
