I love your passion for history and the style of presentation,so I enjoyed watching the video overall. A few corrections or finer points need to be added. The name, "Bandara" was originally given to the Sinhalese monarch's children who were borne by 'yakadadoli;/non-kshatriya/'govikula' consorts. Since they were half-blood princes, they did not have a solid/legitimate claim to the throne unless they married a Krshatirya princess of pure Royal blood. That's why Konappu Bandara and Senarath Bandara married Kusumasana Devi alias Dona Katrina to solidify their claim to the throne. Unfortunately, Narendrasinghe's mother was also a yakadadoliya, and he was also considered half-blood. His father Wimaladarmasuriya had banished most Sinhala Kshatriya soorya and chandra clan families from the Kandyan Kingdom because his former Khastirya randoliya had conspired to kill the King's only son Narendrasinghe and his mother and the King's favourite yakadadoliya, Muthukuda Deviya. The king had beheaded this chief consort and had outcasted most of her relatives. The remaining Sooriya and Chandra clan families fled to the coastal areas and severed all their ties with the Kandyan king. That's why Narendrasingha had to import a kshatirya bride from the Madurai Naik royal family. Importing Brides from the Madurai nayak royal family was an established practice but none of them became the chief consort for the simple fear that it would upset the Royal Bloodline. Yet, some historians contest Queen Pramlia's pureblood status and claim she was an impostor as Chokkanatha Nayak refused to send a pureblood Royal princess.
Also, the Sinhala name "Bandara" and the Tamil name "Pandaram" have very different etymologies and have no common origin despite being false cognates. The Tamil word, "Pandaram" belongs to a sub-caste of Temple workers in India. Their main role was to supply flowers and flower garlands to Hindu temples. They were allowed to take up priestly duties when Brahmin priests were not present. Some people of the Pandaram caste who had migrated to Sri Lanka later on may have sinhalaised their names as Bandara. There is a popular claim that the first known member of the influential Bandaranaike family, Nilapperumal was a leader of the pandararam caste. 'Nilapperumal' was later on sinhalized as Kalukapuge, which was then used for some time as the original surname of the Bandaranaikes. Some even claim that Pandara Naik went on to become Bandaranaike (Note how they spell their name,different from the original spelling, Bandaranayaka) They rose to power in Colonial ceylon due to the services rendered to the British government in Ceylon but they were never able to get full recognition as "Radala" in the original sense.
Afrer the defeat of the 1918 rebellion, most original Radala families of the Bandaravaliya lost their status and land tenure due to Barren Land Ordinance. It is claimed that the British created a new Radala class,in Kandy mainly comprising of planters from Sabaragamuwa who were more subservient to them and helped with the execution of the British colonial manifesto. A similar previleged mudliar class was created in the coastal area. The new British radalas and the low-country mudliayar classes eventually replaced the original Bandaravaliaya to become the elite of the country that went on to become the rulers once the British left Ceylon.
I really appreciate you persisting with this videos series. I hope you get to cover many more topics making this channel a comprehensive arsenal of knowledge and information on our motherland's history. I realise that at present, most Sri Lankans aren't that interested in embracing anything Sri Lankan; our roots or anything we've accomplished as this tiny, yet sophisticated nation. Although there are still some of us left, especially amongst us expats, who are thoroughly interested in learning about the history of our proud nation.
