The hang-up is the transfer bar hitting the firing pin base. I polished mine and it went away. To check, point it down and dry fire. You will find that it happens much more often.
@@manderson7173 Right but the transfer bar, at least on my Henry, is right alongside the hammer so unless they are built slightly different (which is possible, my Henry is the only transfer bar I own) the bar shouldn't even be close to the firing pin in SA. The question I was actually getting at was essentially "is it a different style where the bar rides below the pin even with the hammer back?"
I have no experience with Taurus revolvers. That said. I DO have other guns with transfer bar safeties and the theory is nothing new. The transfer bar should NOT be in a position between the hammer and firing pin unless the trigger is held to the rear. In that case, the transfer bar would not hang up on anything during cylinder rotation. For example, on my Colt Trooper MKIII, the transfer bar stays below the firing pin until I pull the trigger. If I manually cock the revolver and hold the hammer while I pull the trigger, the _trigger pull_ lifts the transfer bar to its position behind the firing pin. If I release the trigger at any point, the transfer bar again drops below the firing pin and the hammer would land on the revolver frame. In DA mode, the transfer bar does not rise up until the very last part of the trigger pull, just before the hammer releases. I no longer have any Ruger revolvers, but the 3 single six revolvers I bought for my sons operated the same. For a transfer bar to function as a safety it CAN NOT be in position until the trigger is pulled. As such it should have no interference with cylinder rotation.
I have a Heritage Rough Rider SAA 45Colt that from the first day, there was a point, occasionally, where it seemed to hang up when cocking the hammer. It wouldn’t do it with the muzzle pointing up. I completely disassembled the handgun and it seemed the casting was really rough where the hand could occasionally drag on casting burs. I diamond filed the space walls and opening and that helped.
I bought 1 of these in natural stainless steel about 4-5yrs ago for my wife as bear protection. No, it isn't nearly as nice as my S&W Model 629-1 BUT it was less than 1/2 the cost, shoots very well and hasn't had a single issue since it was purchased. Even with the porting this is a very light weight revolver and full power 44 mag ammo is going to kick. However, for my wife a 44 Special loaded with a 255 gr hard cast SWC at 1100fps is plenty good for defense against black bears and recoil is very manageable with the big soft pachmayr grips I put on for her. This is a very small frame for a 44 Magnum so I wouldn't shoot thousands of round of full power bear loads through it as I don't know that the little frame could handle thousands of them and the person doing the shootings hands would be a bit tenderized by doing it.
Many years ago, a friend of mine bought one of the factory custom jobs Tracker .44 mag with an 8.5' barrel. It was the most accurate revolvers he and I ever shot. There must have been a lot of hand fitting because the tolerances were very tight.
Had one just like that years ago. I had just picked it up and then went to a shoot by a local gun forum. Using the Tracker right out of the box with the same 240 Winchester ammo I won the 50 ft accuracy match. This was slow fire with any handgun. I was competing against 22lr and up. The tightest 5 shot group won. This revolver was the softest shooting 4 inch that I ever had. The porting and grip really works. I mostly shot the Keith and Skeeter 44 Special loads in this revolver. The Keith load went 975 fps and the skeeter load went 850 fps. Great video. Thanks for making it.
I have one of the newer models with the other grip style. I replaced the front sight with a green fiberoptic style sight for a smith model . Only slight moderate modification to the sight to fit the revolver. Shoots pretty well for the cost . Only got it after you reviewed the Taurus bigger model and it seemed the quality. Had gotten better. Decent one for the money . I got mine i think it was around 450ish
That hang up/lock up you mentioned happened to me on my Taurus M44. It's the plunger spring. They get something like a crease in them and then the spring gets like a kink in it. I called Taurus and they sent me a new spring for free. It came fast. Look. I'm pretty sure that kink in the spring came from me riding the hammer and riding the trigger. Same year and make pistol as your are holding.
Buffalo, I have had that same hiccup in the trigger pull. What I found was the casings were backing out slightly after each shot, going far enough back after some shots to start binding as the cylinder turns. Making sure there was no lubricant in the shell holes was what fixed it. Maybe there was some lubricant from the factory? Some brake cleaner on a qtip to get any grease out of the cylinder holes made it so the cases weren't backing out anymore.
Love my Tracker 44 mag. It’s a handful. Definitely something you don’t want to shoot hot loads in. I like the flat nose cheap stuff. The size is perfect, I even have an IWB holster. K frame holster fits it. Of all my revolvers this one I always grab.
@@Kinetic.44 I think they hurt your hands more than the gun but all my Taurus revolvers have loose lockup. I’ve never owned one new so I don’t have anything to go off. I don’t think the slight velocity gain is worth the extra punch and blast.
The Trackers are nice revolvers. I have the 627 SS 4in 357/38 & love it. The porting helps on recoil & also lets you know how good your hearing protection is or isn't 🙉. Mine did have the better grips than the Ribbers but I switched to nice set of walnut combat grips. Great marksmanship as always Sir. Happy Holidays! 🎄🙏👍🎯
I have a Taurus 686 and I'm glad to see that Taurus seems to depart from the red plastic insert on their sights cause it does not make it any easier to pick up.
Buffalo. Always a good video. Great shooting with that relative short barrel .44 Mag. A while back I bought a used Taurus model 44 (not Tracker) with an 8.25" barrel but with the porting is actually a ~7" barrel. My Taurus is a very heavy 6-round gun that is not too bad to shoot. Thanks for sharing I really enjoy your videos. Merry Christmas and take care.
Better safe than sorry with those tomatoes….😂 Really nice .44 magnum! I have thoughts of picking up another .44mag wheel gun….started reloading that caliber this year and having so much fun. Those Buffalo Bore rounds looked stout! Hope you’re having a great weekend!
Thank you! You NEED another .44 Mag LOL We all do! It's a great cartridge for reloading. If not for that I wouldn't be able to shoot .44 nearly as much as I do. I appreciate ya stopping by!
Buff, I just love your "warts & all" reviews. Especially on those weapons that we don't often see down here in Oz. Seasons Greetings to you and yours from the land down under.
I have had an itch for a 44 mag revolver for quite some time. I found a Blackhawk in 44 mag a few days ago at an auction for decent money, now I own one. My m77/44 was lonely. The first time I bought 44 mag ammo I about swallowed my tongue at the price. I started reloading for it asap. I thoroughly enjoyed the video, thank you for the great content.
That is the stable mate to the model 69 S&W. But comes ported from Taurus. And uses a full lug barrel versus the semi lug barrel of model 69 S&W L frame.
I don't want to loctite the adjustment screws, especially on another man's firearm. But yeah that would lock it down so long as you never planned on changing loads and making adjustments. Thanks for the suggestion!
Nice medium size carry option. Good for bear defense carry. I have chronographed Winchester white box at over 1300 fps with longer hunting barrels. So it is a fairly decent option for the money for multiple uses. Well done as always. Thank you.
I like Winchester White box. I base my reloads around the same velocity and energy. It's comfortable to shoot but you still know you're shooting .44 magnum. In these smaller, lighter revolvers it's my go to ammo.
I have shot a friends Taurus Model 425 Stainless Steel Heavy 4" ported barrel 5 shot in 41 Magnum. It has the same grip as that 44 Mag in your video. I love this 41 Mag ! Comfortable grip, low recoil, always functions smoothly and the rear sight ( fully adjustable ) has never shot loose or lost adjustment ! The barrel is a true 4" in length that is ported unlike the one in your video. I'm not sure of the year of production but was bought new in box approx. twenty or more years ago. Thanks, always enjoy your videos ! ! !
Love mine. I bought one of the 692 tracker models that shoots both .357/.38 special and 9mm cylinders. Awesome very usable and versatile pistol. Interesting also, but the .357 version doesn't have the chamber and the rifling is all the way to the end of the 3". Mine doesn't have the lock either, thank good.ness. 8)
I bought a Taurus 445Ti back in 2000. It’s a 5 shot, 2” ported, all titanium, 44 Special. It had that same trigger hang up but I couldn’t get around the cylinder a single time without locking up. Taurus finally replaced it after I sent it back a second time. It’s really a neat little gun. I like it a lot better now after replacing the Ribber grip with a factory boot grip and a spring kit from Wolff.
Wow. That look inside the barrel is a good trick. Expansion chamber is a good idea. My model 69 needs that. Recoil is brutal. Keep those videos rolling.
The tracker .357 has that lock up feel in the trigger to. There's about a fat 1/32 to 1/16 of meat on the trigger that catches on the sear ever so slightly and in some case does catch and cause lock up. On mine i took 320 grit diamond stone and knocked it down a good bit then finished it off with 1000-2500 grit sand paper. That fixed the issue in there. I also polished all the mating surfaces on the side of the trigger and the hammer to help with the "catchy" feel. Thing runs smooth as silk now.
I've had a 4" .41 Magnum and another in .45 ACP for at least 15 years...great compact revolver. Also they make much better "Special" due to size, recoil and the shorter length of the cylinder.
I don't know what flinched more when you fired those Buffalo Bore Hard Cast hunting rounds, my arthritic hands or my wallet! Ouch, to both of them! You handled the recoil nicely though, great shooting!
Tell ol Greg I said hey and Merry Christmas. Great job on a great looking gun!! I like the look because it is sorta misleading to it being a .44. As always, thanks and keep doing what you do. We love it out here!!! (no I did not forget SLOBBER SLOBBER) LOL
Thinking about buying a taurus and undecided on 44 magnum or 357 magnum but I just watch a couple of other guys shooting them and you are a much better marksman than they were lol
I have a .45 acp tracker that is about 10 years old, and mine also has that random hitch in the action. When I fire it single action, the hammer sometimes doesn't want to go all the way back to full cock.
Good demo of the revolver Buffalo. The kick with the Buffalo Bore Ammo WAS evident when you shot. When I watch these types of revolver kickback my hands seem to tingle. js
Hello Buffaloe, I've been subbed to your channel for a couple years, I just don't comment much, I'm old school and a big revolver fan, as an ex-LEO back in the early 80s, My duty & EDC Is the 357 Mag, and the 44 mag is also a favorite, all have been in SS except a ruger GP-100 blue 4" and a nickel S&W model 19-1 I'm a fan of Taurus & have a 9mm polymer framed striker fired compact, and rotate with the 357s I agree with you on the grip, up until now I was not aware of the barrel type, you Sir are a great shot, Thanks for posting. 👍🇺🇸
Thank you. I'd imagine you've seen a lot of people shoot so to have you comment on my video and tell me I'm a great shot is pretty darn cool! Glad you enjoy the videos!
Had the blued version, it shot so high that the sights were useless. I pulled off the irons, and put on a red dot, having to max out the elevation to get on paper at 20 yards. The gun needed to go back to Taurus twice for timing issues also, the gun would not center the cylinder. On the third repair, they got it fixed and I sold the damn thing.
This gun has some decent every day carry characteristics for the woods. Being intelligent with your ammo choices is gonna make or break your relationship with this gun. This little piece is not a plug and play. It requires some effort to use to full satisfaction. But what big bore hand gun doesn't?
Make it a true 3 OR 4" barrel (no expansion chambers or porting), drop about ten ounces off the overall empty weight, add a sixth round, and chamber it in .44Spl or even .45 Colt's and I'd carry it every day! Failing that, despite my appreciation of Taurus handguns, I'll have to stick with Charter Arms for my concealed carry Big Bore revolvers. And yes, I know, those would be five shot revolvers too. Great video as usual!
I got off gunbroker a Taurus 6 shot stainless steel revolver with a 4" ported barrel. The recoil is pretty reasonable, the gun isn't a lightweight model, the balance is pretty good.
@@buffalosoutdoors I really like that lightweight S&W .44 mag snubnose you have, it looks so handy. The recoil you described and could see in the video is way more than the recoil on the Taurus.
I’ve been looking at some lighter weight 44 revolvers. They definitely are more difficult to shoot with hotter loads but the trade off is being able to carry them all day in the woods while also carrying other gear and a rifle. The S&W or even bigger Taurus revolvers weighing 50 oz or so are nice to shoot but I don’t want to lug them around. I was looking at the Tracker as an inexpensive option and the S&W 329pd as a more expensive option but likely much better built…also quite a bit lighter and with better sights.
I have the stainless one and mine too has that wierd stick up where about half way through the trigger pull it locks. It's 100% random but same as your experience it about every 20 rounds or so.
No shit, I was given one of these (except it’s the silver version) for free because the guy hated to shoot it. Still sitting in my gun safe for the past ten years, never pulled the trigger on it.
I like the new grip but I just replaced it with a Hogue mono grip. The Hogue grip feels better to me - the stock grips sting my palm with standard pressure loads...
That's sweet revolver! I've been wanting to get a .44 magnum for a while but they're all so expensive. These seem to be going for about $500 though which isn't that bad. I've used blue loctite on screws on various guns over the years for red dots or scopes. That might fix the issue with the rear sight coming loose. Great video! Very informative! No BS, just facts and actual shooting. Nice job!
My model 500 S&W has a 6.5 inch ported barrel with an expansion chamber so it is the same setup. So probably only a 5 inch barrel in actual size. No longer made so mine is a keeper. And it is a semi-lug barrel profile.
The first rounds I shot out of my .44 were those 305 grain buffalo I hurt a lot of friends with those and got myself banned from bringing it around several family shoot outs. I do like the gun but an issue I’ve seen them have is the cylinder will hang after a few rounds. It seems like it shaves a hair off of each round as it’s fired.
Those original Gripper grips are the BEST if you shoot magnums in this gun. I've had one for 20 years now and tried wood grips once, just once. Magnum loads beat my hand so bad. Swapped back to the rubber grips pronto.
I bought a 692 in .357/9mm and it was supposed to come with the original Ribber grips, but i was chagrined to see it show up in a set of Hogue knockoffs that Taurus seems to be moving too. I was so disappointed. But then I found a set of Ribber grips on their website for $10 so I finally got it the way I wanted it. Bought an extra set of grips just in case...
Ever figure out what was going on with the hitch in the trigger? Interestingly enough, I just bought a new Taurus 692 .357 where I also feel a hitch. Taurus also decided to drop the key lock which is nice.
Buffalo you keep shooting that thing close to the teee like that you will need a fire extinguisher. The flames were jumping from the porting. Nice video my friend.
Hi Buffalo, that 44 sure made some stewed mater's.lol I've been kicking around the idea of getting a Taurus revolver in 357 for some time. But the past history Taurus has keeps holding me back. Interested in what your opinion is of Taurus. It would be a six shot also. Thanks for all your hard work and time Sir.
For what it's worth, I own a taurus 627 tracker (.357 7 shot) and in the year I've had it so far I've put well over 1500 full power rounds through it without a single issue. And it shows no signs of quitting any time soon. I also have a friend with one of their raging hunter models in .44, and his has at least twice the round count mine does and still shoots as well as the day it was new. They make excellent target shooters, are very accurate, and I swear they're the softest recoiling magnum revolvers I've ever experienced.
I've heard some horror stories, so I know there are some bad ones out there, but I am going to say that solely based on the experiences I've had with Taurus revolvers they have performed very good. The one in this video is the only one I've had a problem with and I am not sure if it is a real problem or not (the occasional hitch in the action). I own a 460 Raging hunter and it's been excellent. One of the most accurate revolvers I've shot on this channel was a 627 Tracker (357 magnum). Admittedly my experience with Taurus revolvers is limited so take that with a grain of salt.
@@buffalosoutdoors thank you Buffalo for your input. I appreciate it very much Sir! I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas! Merry Christmas

I've had a 4" .41 Magnum and another in .45 ACP for at least 15 years...great compact revolver.
Also they make much better "Special" due to size, recoil and the shorter length of the cylinder.
As Always, thanks, Buffalo! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Merry Christmas to you and yours as well. Thank you.
Beautiful wheel gun! Completely agree with you on the grip. Have to get one for my Taurus collection!
Buffalo, ...you are a seriously talented shooter, and a pleasure to listen to. 😊
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Them stocks remind me of the grips on my Murry BMX bicycle, Christmas sometime real early eighties 😂😂 love the videos
LOL I can see that now that you mention it!
I don't know what flinched more when you fired those Buffalo Bore Hard Cast hunting rounds, my arthritic hands or my wallet! Ouch, to both of them! You handled the recoil nicely though, great shooting!
Thank you! It wasn't very pleasent on my hands but I had to do it!
I'll tell him! LOL
Thinking about buying a taurus and undecided on 44 magnum or 357 magnum but I just watch a couple of other guys shooting them and you are a much better marksman than they were lol
i must say you can shoot well
Thank you!
For some reason I had no idea that Taurus had a smaller frame .44 Mag like the S&W model 69.
The Taurus predates the 69 by quite a few years.
Thanks for the comment Gun Sam! I always appreciate it when you stop by.
I have a .45 acp tracker that is about 10 years old, and mine also has that random hitch in the action. When I fire it single action, the hammer sometimes doesn't want to go all the way back to full cock.
Thanks, always wondered how well these shot. But I want to get the model 44...
Nice lookin tool!👍🏽😀❤️🇺🇸
Thanks!
Good stuff bro!
Thank you!
Another good honest review!
Good demo of the revolver Buffalo. The kick with the Buffalo Bore Ammo WAS evident when you shot. When I watch these types of revolver kickback my hands seem to tingle. js
I'll say this it was not pleasant. I wouldn't want to shoot very many of those through it!
I'm amazed at your accuracy, good job!
Tell me the truth. How many times you hit your table lol.
My table is unscathed. I hope it stays that way. It's been a good one.
Ammo is key for sure.
You’re a hell of a shot! New follower!
Backpacker's 44 magnum. Reduced weight for your total load out. Competes with Smith's model 69 I presume.
I got off gunbroker a Taurus 6 shot stainless steel revolver with a 4" ported barrel. The recoil is pretty reasonable, the gun isn't a lightweight model, the balance is pretty good.
Nice!
Cool to watch your videos I own 3 44mag one is a tracker 44 now that I know that it can take 305 grain I’m going to try it out thanks for video.
Thanks again, Buffalo. How about a Kimber K6 review. I dont know anyone here in Morgan that has one. Im a sucker for the snubbies
Ooooo I want a K6 but I don't have one at this time. If I can get my hands on one you'll definitely see it here on the channel!
Great job as always Buffalo. Thanks for sharing 👍
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
100% agree , if you have to have a hammer lock screw Taurus did it right . IDK what S&W was thinking drilling a hole in the frame?
I was surprised how close it was right of the box . I think the sites are loose like that on all of them .
Sell it, always in the market for a revolver
Buy some 44 special ammo and you'll have a ton of fun.
I like the new grip but I just replaced it with a Hogue mono grip. The Hogue grip feels better to me - the stock grips sting my palm with standard pressure loads...
Just discovered that there is a distributor exclusive 2.5" version of this. My bank account is in grave danger.
Nice job!
THanks, glad you enjoyed the video and hopefully found it useful.
My model 500 S&W has a 6.5 inch ported barrel with an expansion chamber so it is the same setup. So probably only a 5 inch barrel in actual size. No longer made so mine is a keeper. And it is a semi-lug barrel profile.
Sweet!
Should be able to see a nice fireball coming out of the porting at night.
No doubt!
I think the new grip would be better like you suggested. Taurus for the money aint bad.
Thank you
Welcome!
👍👍Thanks Buffalo………you turned those chopped tomatoes into diced tomatoes. Great shooting as always.
Thanks for the comment! Glad you enjoyed the tomato dicing! LOL
I don't like locking mechanisms either, but the keyhole in the hammer is far more visually appealing than S&W's hole in the frame.
Agreed.
Underwood sells a hard cast wad cutter in both 44sp and 44mag. Would be great in this gun.
I love Underwood! Good stuff!
That Winchester white box is pretty stout out of my 6 inch barrel 629 I average 1350 fps. That's a cool revolver from Taurus.
I like the looks....thanks for show...
Thanks for watching!
Great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Hi Buffalo. I wonder is lead bullets would lead up the expansion chamber and ports?
Unfortunately I’m sick in bed today. So it’s buffalo all day.
I hope you get to feeling better soon. Glad you enjoy my videos.
Bought an extra set of grips just in case...
thanks for the video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ever figure out what was going on with the hitch in the trigger? Interestingly enough, I just bought a new Taurus 692 .357 where I also feel a hitch. Taurus also decided to drop the key lock which is nice.
Want one!!!
👍
Buffalo you keep shooting that thing close to the teee like that you will need a fire extinguisher. The flames were jumping from the porting. Nice video my friend.
Wouldn't that be a mess if I burned my Red Cedar up... 😲 Thanks for the comment brother!
@@TranceMechanic7 thank you for your input it is very appreciated.
That top strap seems pretty thin. Curious how it would stand up to higher volume shooting.
Loved your video
Wasn't there a movie once that had "Killer Tomatoes" in the title? You could claim self defense here!! ;-)
LOL I think there was! This was clearly a self defense situation! 🤣
