Dunno where it started, as there appears to be precious little material on it. There are, however, a couple of extremely well made fan films on the subject that have bolstered its popularity. Though I imagine given the very high entry cost of film making, the ship must have been quite strong even before then. (Unless it somehow created the concept, which, also possible I suppose. One never knows with fandoms.)
