The title of this video is the single most badass and brutal thing I've read today. Chemistry jokes are next level, I swear.
With pyridine, it's not just a bad smell, it's how an absolutely tiny/infinitesimal amount of it can render a room uninhabitable. And it kindalingers. If you spilt some on a house carpet you'd need to rip the carpet & dispose before you could live there again. And still there'd be a residual something in the house forever after. Pervasive isn't in it
and I can make this shit with simple ("simple") chemical reactions? Man, my enemies are going to hate me.

It's "pervasive" for about 5 minutes spilled outside a fume hood and left to evaporate on its own.
@@LilCletus If it's a non-absorbent surface, yes, it will evaporate, temporarily clear the room & begone, if it lands on something absorbent is where your problems begin. My 6 experience in organic synth. labs was 40+ years ago but that memory never leaves me. It is truly FOUL and not in a sulphurous/bad-eggy way. "Best" thing you can say is it's very volatile & not reckoned to be carcinogenic, whatever other damage it can do

Copper chromite is a far superior catalyst for this but it does require either extra steps or extra cash depending on whether or not you want to buy it.
The costs will have to be calculated before hand. I would need to make atleast 400ml of pyridine to justify me exposing myself to chrome and the expense.

The smell is a mixture of ammonia and fish. It's not nasty or sickening, but it is pungent, sharp. Best to avoid breathing it if you're trying to have kids.

What use is molecular sieves when the distillation glassware is open to the atmosphere instead of attaching a Nitrogen or Argon filled balloon...?
nitrogen is pretty overkill for just making dry pyridine. As long as you aren't just leaving it out, the molsieves will absorb plenty of water and keep it dry.

I didnt get a good look at it in the video, but one thing I learned recently is that aluminum foil has two different faces and you always want to wrap the shinier side of it around your flask. To me it looked like you weren't doing that.
EDIT: now that I googled it looks like I'm just dumb and there is no difference, could be fun to see exactly how dumb I am by testing if both sides perform the same
don't feel bad, i've heard the same thing many, many times. i remember it being which side sticks less to food though, which would be the shiny side if its true. the surface finish is so barely different though, i can't imagine it actually matters

There really wasn’t much to clean up! All glassware is washed with distilled water and then acetone after that. The disgusting tar can be broken up and put into waste bin for disposal to the right disposal place. If copper carbonate is somehow in there and won’t come out, little bit of dilute hcl can fix that

Pyridine is added to lab ethanol when they sell it so people dont drink it. Its called denatured alcohol. They also add naphthol or naphthalene i think

Why on earth would anyone want to make pyridine? It stinks on ice, and while I can think of one use for it that's the reason you can no longer buy loperamide in bulk, there isn't any other reason I can think of to make it. It's used commercially to extract fat soluble vitamins or fish oil for chemical potency tests, but better, safer methods replaced those methods in the late 90s.
