The last time I was on the island was back in the 60’s. Traveled by a small WW2 era seaplane. I’m glad to see the essential character and charm of the island is intact. Great video, thanks so much!
James Keys . Thanks Jim, last time I was there was 1987. I was stunned at the amount of people there. It was a sleepy little island village back then. Now a Cruise ship drops off 1000s of people everyday. Everything we wanted to do was sold out. I.e. glass bottom boat ride etc. but still, the place is beautiful. Felt like I left the country for a day.
I spent many “Endless Summers” in Avalon 1959-65 working in Avalon and surfing camp outs on the leeward side at Ben Weston with islander friends. Worked at the bird park, glass bottom boats, and many other jobs just to stay on the island all Summer. Great memories. Thanks for your video.
bshpilot64 .....wow! Lucky you, i used to go most every 4th of July and camp at Bird Park. Guess you worked for the Rentons whose granddaughter and i still friends from 1st grade, which got me a lot of comp tickets for the glass bottom boat etc from “Uncle Malcomb” at the Catalina Island tour company. Their home was just above the Yacht Club and still owned by the family. Catalina to me, is heaven on earth!! Love my original vintage Catalina bird tiles/ tables/ pottery etc.
You gotta love being around lots of people you don't know to want to come here. Two Harbors, man... Two Harbors. Nice and quiet, none of this commercial buzz.
@@MichaelJirochVisualArtist Yep, I think you're right. It takes a certain mindset to go the cruise ship route. Everything is bundled into a nifty package for easy consumption. You don't even have to think, except maybe if you'd prefer getting a Pina colada or a strawberry gelato.
I went to Catalina Island and at the end of the day got back to late ha ha, I missed the boat back lucky I had money or I'd been sleeping on the beach all night 😃😃😃 a fun place !!!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. We are going to America next year from South Australia and would love to go to Catalina Island. Do you have to book the ferry ride over to the island in advance or can you just purchase tickets on the day? Also do you know how much the ferry tickets cost and is one day enough to explore the island? By the way, have subscribed to your channel a while ago and have loved all of your video's.
Sally White ...one, thank you so much for the compliment and the subscribing. I thought I could just show up and buy a ticket. But I called in advance and the time I want to go was all sold out so I had to change my plans and reserve a seat and go the next day. I think you should reserve a seat, just in case. But then again, there were a few empty seats...but they might have been sitting on the top outside seats. Never hurts to plan a head. You have a very small window to cancel your reservation before the boat leaves. I paid a $68 USD round trip. Kids under 10 less.
One day is enough to see the city, but to get the full experience, go for 3 days. This allows you to spend one day getting used to the layout of the city and take some basic tours & do basic activities, spend another day going to the museum and taking more "behind the scenes" tours, then spending the last day doing activities that take you into the interior of the island. There's MUCH more to see than just the city of Avalon - a whole island to see. * Take it from a local *
You did a beautiful job.. very professional... can you please tell me if the Via CASINO area is always that peaceful.. or was it like that because it was later in the day... I noticed the areas before 10:32 or really noisier and more crowded with all those stores. Also what was the name of that large hotel at the end. I also have to tell you it's wonderful that you did not add music over this which is regretfully what almost everybody else does and it's very irritating and I am not the only one complaining about it sometimes we just want to see what a place is like and hear it's natural sounds
gardensofthegods ...busy or not busy...that is the question. When a Cruise ship is in port....there are 2000 people roaming the crescent. If no cruise ship, relatively quiet. Casino way is quiet most of the time. All the action is near or around the shopping/dining areas. I do not know the name of the hotel, but I’m sure you can google map it and find out. Thanks for the compliment.
Thank you yes I thought that might be why but I wasn't completely sure... but the reason I did suspect it was the cruise ship is there seems to be that hectic frenetic energy .. it's not the same energy as people who are staying on the island or who even took a ferry or smaller boat .
Wife and I are celebrating our 10year anniversary there this may... hotel booked already can't wait!
tony hernandez Heck yeah! hope you guys have a blast!
thx for this, we are on the Celebrity Millennium Sept 16 from Vancouver to LAX and will visit there for a day. Look forward to it.

Cruise ship people...2500-3000 a day.

The Palm trees are much taller now...Last time I was there they were about 4 to 6 feet tall
I was about to live there before my parents pick another house
Way more like Naples meets Pismo Beach on its way to being Santa Barbara or Newport now than it was when I spent so much time there as a child.
IM A KID! This island is awesome you might see me walking around!
Great video!
vaq130 ...thank you!

Sally White also...I recommend 2 days there. 3 nights. To have a relaxed trip.
