  • In this video we are tasting really beautiful looking Mango Varieties: Maha Chanok, Phoenix and O-15 Mangoes. Phoenix and O-15 were purchased from Zill high performance plants nursery in Boynton Beach, FL. Maha Chanok mango is from a friend in Delray Beach, FL who goes by the name of 'FLnative' in Tropical fruit forum.
    Disclaimer: We all know that different mango varieties have different flavors; some have a classic mango taste, some have citrusy sweetness, some - tones of peach, pineapple, guava; some a cocktail of many tropical fruits and some have floral smell and flavor tones, so they cannot compete or be compared. Nor can they be given points like 1-10, as taste is very personal and subjective, varies from person to person and culture to culture. Also, the same mango variety grown in different parts of Florida will taste different depending on changes in microclimate, annual rainfall, soil health, mineral and salt content, fertigation regimen (irrigation+fertilization), etc. Lastly, mango picked early / not fully mature vs picked at the peak maturity changes how they ripen off of tree; often mangoes picked green, hard & immature eventually change color and look nice but will not get optimal sweetness (brix) or the complexity of flavor that makes mango such a unique and tasty fruit.
    //We are getting some very personal comments filled with negative energy, and we don’t want that in our lives. We thought the disclaimer in description would be enough for all to understand that the mango tastings are not done to rate or devalue certain mangoes, we do it out of love for this wonderful fruit. Any mango variety grown in its optimal growing condition would be superior in taste to any other best mango in the world. Most newer varieties of mango trees in our garden are still young to produce except a few trees, so we source them from growers around, which we disclose in video descriptions. Some of the fruit we consider ready we pick from their trees ourselves. Plus, there are some varieties that just got released this year, or last year, or 2 yrs ago which no home grower has been able to grow yet, so we cannot (and won’t!) grow all the mangoes we taste in our videos; it makes no sense to us to grow a tree first and taste the variety later. And even then, taste from tree to tree of the same mango variety varies; plus year to year, even month to month there is variability. We thought every mango lover would understand that, but seems that some people are hurt and want to attack me personally. This will not be tolerated. Let’s have a healthy discussion instead! Please comment on how you felt tasting these mangoes this year instead, and make your own videos; the more diverse the taste of each mango the better, it is for everyone to learn - let’s avoid personal attacks, let’s be constructive and creative. As I said many times before, we are all different, and different opinions are welcome!

    People like new things but Maha is just as good as any other new variety out there. They don’t seem to taste well on young trees and even have problems fruiting, but the older the tree gets the better and bigger the fruit gets. It’s an excellent mango and disease resistant tree.

      Maha Chanok mango's craze was very reportedly high in Florida 5-6 yrs ago then it declined with the newer Zill varieties coming in. Last year we tasted Maha from 2 different sources and it's taste did not impress, was a very sweet tasting mango with a thai mango taste and always wondered what people are tasting in it to rave about in groups. This Maha finally solves the puzzle. Not sure if it has a certain window period of this exquisite taste and aroma but it it is so then this is a tricky mango like Carrie.
      I have grafted the O-15 to Fruit Punch branches and after many months of dormancy the graft has woken up with the rains last 3 weeks, and already pushed 2 new shoots in these 3 weeks, seems to be fast grower. Hope i can taste from my tree in the next 1-2 yrs.

      @@growpuravida last night I sampled my first 36-8 ( aka Super Alphonso ) I did not know how to kn ow when it was ripe, i had two mangos, one had just slightly gotten a little less green, and was getting soft, the smell from the outside was that of coconut. so I decided to try it, I think I was 1 day too soon, but it was ripe enough, it had the spiciness of an Indian mango, mixed in with the more traditional mango flavor, and acidity was high, funny thing is I did not detect any coconut flavor or smell from the inside. my mother loved the fruit, she liked the "sweet and sour" aspect of it. the next one i will let it go one day beyond that point, to do a comparison.
      as for Maha, and mango aficionados, I have noticed that, many are addicted to new twists, mangoes that they raved about 3 years ago are now 4th place to the newest hybrids. the question is, are the newer hybrids really superior to the older varieties, or is it that the novelty of the older fruit has warn off? you mentioned Kent in one of your videos, this is an old school, variety, and a perfectly ripened Kent is a very delicious fruit IMO. of course it does have some downfalls, like internal breakdown or jelly seed. on occasion.

      36-8 was excellent last year. This year i got only one and shared with my friend in coral springs. It is very good tasting with multiple dimensions to its flavor. I asked the breeder Gary Zill about releasing it this year and he seemed very positive about it. Most likely this mango tree will be released this fall and will be sold out in no time.

    I'm curious if I should not fertilize my Maha as you said Frank's had a great taste profile compared to others you've tasted...

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  4 года назад +1

      If you keep your soil healthy, you won't need to. I don't fertilize once the tree is established, but some experts say you will have to fertilize a couple times a year. Best would be to watch the tree. The leaves usually tell if the tree is deficient in certain minerals like Zinc, Magnesium, Manganese, Iron, Boron etc. and then decide to fertilize according to the tree's needs. If the soil is deficient in micros, do a foliar application of micronutrients. If you use a nitrogen-based fertilizer, you will have a lot of vegetative growth and no fruit...

    Curious if you have the Chok Anan. Its quite a cheap variety in Thailand, but tastewise amazing.

      @growpuravida  3 года назад +2

      We do have the tree but, like many Indian varieties that taste different here, it doesn’t taste the same as in Thailand. Soil is very different here so our local Florida varieties are developed with that in mind

    I had the same problem. Some Phoenix mangos are to die for, and some taste like death🤢
    I love the sweet ones

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  2 года назад +2

      Yes i am not entirely sure but my guess is, they should not be left to hang on the tree until fully ripe like many other mango varieties that get better as they stay longer on the tree. Phoenix mango gets the funky taste when overripe. Will experiment more this year.

    Maha is the prettiest mango there is but it’s mediocre in taste. By coincidence today I was converting my 3 Maha trees to other varieties. Today 1 became an M-4. Tomorrow the other 2 will become LZ’s

      We were never really impressed by Maha Chanok until trying this particular fruit. Frank doesn't use fertilizers, doesn't water his tree, maybe the intensity of taste increases with low watering, hard to tell... also, our lot is sitting on a bank of a brackish river, so our own mangoes taste very different from all the mangoes that we taste from around... our own Maha Chanok hasn't produced yet, .... we'll see.
