I agree with all of these especially the villain problem.
The issue with Helluva Boss is that this series has a "Villain of the week" type thing, but the difference with other Villain of the Week shows like Power Rangers is that they get rid of those villains in the same episode.
However Helluva Boss has villains that are way too major to just be eradicated in one episode. Not to mention the series never hints back at those villains. They just appear when the writers want them to appear with no build up or anything.

Viv's animation skills are insane. The fact she put all of this together is extremely impressive. But the writing in Helluva Boss is atrocious. She can't decide whether its a situation comdey with a seriel writing style, or an episodic relationship drama with deep comentary on class and sex. The newest episode is jarring when Blitz and Fiz are making snide remarks about eachother being sex slaves to Rich overlords. It's said like a joke, but Striker is genuinely right when he shuts them both up, telling them that they've betrayed Imps. We're 2 seasons in and we don't really know anything about actually living in hell. We don't know anything about Stolas's veiws on the class structure. A lot of serious questions are ignored because of Viv's weird decision to think of Helluva Boss as an extension of Hasbin Hotel rather than its own thing set in the same universe. We're told just to wait till the world gets fleshed out in Hazbin, as if that'll suddenly fix the glarring contradictions in Helluva Boss

    @carrotfishofishal Год назад +894

Here's some other points my friend and I noticed about the series-
    1) It's specifically the queer men that get sexualised, barely any of the girls and women are. For example, when Moxxie is talking serious to his father and they added a joke where... certain objects popped up through every wall, completely killing the tone and how seriously the scene is to be taken.
    2) The show wants people to pity Blitzo when he himself is a very toxic person that hurts the people around him, along with a few other characters. They portray the abuse Blitzo and Loona commit as comical a lot of the time and still treat them like they're just "flawed characters".
    3) Some of the villains aren't even... villains persay. In Ozzie's episode, Millie and Moxxie are presenting romantic scenes so everyone can see in an establishment intended for sexual themes and atmosphere specifically. Ozzie and Fizzaroli are just doing their jobs when they try to get the two to stop their romantic musical number, it wasn't malice.
There are plenty more flaws and bad aspects to the show and it's writing, but those are just a few I remember noticing and talking about. Honestly if they want to write a show about a toxic, flawed individual, they should see how Bojack was written to show that Blitzo's behaviour is not excusable. I get it's a show about Hell but even then they shouldn't try glorifying the things that happen there.

    • @Tijopi11
      @Tijopi11 Год назад +105

Not to be devil's advocate, but I dont totally agree with these points.
      1. I've noticed this too, the male characters are getting sexualized much more. I'm not a huge fan but it's almost always the other way around where the female characters are sexualized at every corner and men cannot be sexualized ever. I'd prefer both to be sexualized, but only men being sexualized is pretty refreshing.
      2. I mostly agree with this. I particularly hate that Loona is never held accountable and given the "been through the system and has trauma" excuse for why she's allowed to mistreat her friends. I think Blitzo is well-handled though. Flawed characters are perfectly fine as long as their actions are recognized as BAD, including from the cast of the show, and the bad characters suffer consequences for their actions. Blitzo is a good flawed character because this criteria is met and he's clearly suffering from his own actions. Loona is not.
      3. Helluva has a range of villains and antagonists. Most of the villains (aside from Stella) aren't evil. They simply have contrasting motivations and desires compared to our protagonists. Verosika, Stolas, Striker, Fizz, even the Cherubs are written as either full-on victims or simply characters with different goals. It's good variety and makes the villains feel more three-dimensional imo.

Especially number 2, they want us to root and feel bad for Blitz so badly, but I just can’t, and it doesn’t help he’s right half the time and gets to sleep with whoever he looks at because he’s the boss and a chad in bed, I guess?
(Brandon will always his iconic voice though)
Now I get he’s the main character of an adult show, and his backstory gives us a look at why he’s the way he is, but there’s no relatability or anything likable, he’s an imp I know but the show goes back and forth constantly on whether we should feel bad and empathetic for these characters or just let it slide because they’re in hell and it’s expected.
I stopped watching helluva boss a while ago, cause it’s unhealthy how much I have a problem every time a character so much as breathes xd
Although the one thing I don’t have a problem with is the villains, lots of people rant how there’s either too many or the same ones returning, when they’re built up to be threatening and then get underused, I understand, but literally everything has that “villain of the week” kind of thing, but it is annoying when they’re built up as menacing and important to the plot, and then become pointless and non threatening and just a common thug.
Other than that, man do I hope HB finds its footing one day, cause it’s too much of a mess, I don’t hate it, but I hope it does better.

That’s honestly exactly it! They substitute actual depth and adult story telling for adult themes, sex jokes and gore and think that’s good enough to make it an adult show. But they don’t change the way they write, so it comes off less as adults writing a show for other adults, and more like a child’s idea of what makes a show “for adults”. But what makes a show adult is not only the themes, but also the issues the characters face and how they react to them. The characters have to act like adults first, and then you write the story around them. But none of the characters in Helluva Boss feel like adults, and you can only write a story so mature with such childish focal points.

I think a very big oops when it came to villain Crimson came in the aptly-titled episode "Oops," by which I mean the fact that he was seemingly killed off. Crimson was set up as a huge threat in his first appearance, with a masterful ending that shows Crimson silently swearing revenge at IMP. He only interacts with Moxxie in this one episode. In "Oops," Crimson is brought back, but they don't do anything with his character, as the episode revolves around Blitzo and Fizzarolli. But the big thing is that Crimson appears to die in the episode when his warehouse explodes. While he isn't shown dead, we don't see that he survived, unlike with Striker. This may be a fake-out death, but it's hard to believe he survived when he's not shown escaping and someone else is. If they did kill Crimson off in this episode, this was not the way to do it. He should've been defeated by Moxxie; Crimson is Moxxie's most personal enemy. It also should've been done later in the series to build suspense. Speaking of suspense, if this is a fake-out death, then all suspense around the character's next move is gone. Especially since it's been established that Crimson's mafia is financially struggling; that was why Crimson tried to marry Moxxie to Chaz in his first appearance, and why he took Fizzarolli hostage - he outright said "We really need a big score right now" when interviewing Striker. Edit, forgot to include Barbiewire.
Barbiewire: actual textbook definition of a groomer. But "nooo its okay he's 18, even though Barb refers to him as a teenager implying that she sees him as one and that she's specifically targetting teenagers because she can abuse her power over them and extort them for drugs. 🥺"

The attractive of the show is a group of hitman demons killing a person demanded by a client. They did it great in the first season, because they attached to the idea, and had space for a full lore episode. Now in this season 2, they have abandoned this (and yea, summer camp episode is a goofy aah disneyish camp episode with 4 seconds of gore) to make a full season of fan service and songs everywhere (not bad songs, but its a lil bit exaggerated). The main message in the pilot was that no one wants redemption, you can't be redeemed because you're always in hell and you had your chance on Earth. Helluva Boss has some clear, fundamental writing problems that makes it clear this is someone's first draft or official story made into an actual, full-blown series. There's set up, but no payoff. And not in a funny, "subvert expectations" way, like, with Moxxie against his father, they SHOULD have had him not go down in one hit and actually put up a fight. It would have been a perfect moment to show that character growth, it is the most clear linear movement for the plotline. Same for Stolitz's fight at the end of s1; s2, nothing happens because of it.
Personally though I think Stella was in characrer in western energy; she doesn't CARE about gaining Stolas's inheritance. She's already royalty. Her motives had always been to make Stolas pay for screwing her over. Remember, she's rich; she was raised with servants on hand and no consequences for her actions. Basically, she's a spoiled, entitled woman-child because she's never needed to grow up, she's given everything she wants when she wants it, and is waited on by hand and foot. So, yeah, makes sense she doesn't care about the inheritance given she never had. Her brother, on the other hand, is the type to want more power than he even has already.

Yes, agreed. A lot of people are trying to figure out why things went down hill with HB, but it's very obvious even from the start, I think. The animation is beautiful at times, and the voice actors are excellent...but it's clear that a lack of writing experience is at the heart of the problem with this series.
All the issues with the female characters? The poor pacing and this shift to focusing on romance (in a show about assassins in hell, of all things)? All down to the same issue. Fanfiction-like writing. I'm certain a lot of HB's audience are younger, so perhaps they aren't as experienced with certain tropes in fanfiction...but just about everything that is disappointing about the show is actually very much in line with well-established patterns in fanfiction.
The issue with characters like Stella happens constantly in fanfiction of a certain type -- you often have a female character regulated to being a shrieking, soulless harpy who only exists to legitimize the main ship with her awfulness. Strangely, women authors of fanfiction are notorious for shafting and downplaying female characters (if they acknowledge them at all), and you see that quite a bit in HB. Character writing and plot are stripped down to just romantic elements -- again, we're seeing this in HB in real time. And often, when you often read certain types of things, including fanfiction, you're subconsciously affected by it, to the point where it can come out in your own work whether you're aware of it or not.
HB has some good elements, potentially great ones. Like I said, the animation is amazing and getting even better, the voice work is phenomenal, and the lore sounds like it would honestly be fantastic if there was more work put into showing it in the show. But it's clear that they need some good writers to make things work better, but honestly that's not an insult. Story writing is an art, and it's one that takes enormous amounts of practice to perfect, but a lot of people don't realize how much effort is necessary to become a good story teller.

something i just thought about was the whole sibling rivalry thing with millie and her siblings. Guess who also has a similar problem of sibling problems as well? Blitz.
If they want Blitz to reconcile with her sister (or hell, even fizz, who may even see him like a brother or just a close friend), they could have millie reconcile with Sally May as a way to let things go from the past and have a better relationship for the future. Then this type of reconciliation can be used for Blitz next to show that he could do the same with those he previously hurt by whatever reason (plus no one knows yet what exactly he has done to them). This could be a great way to mirror both characters and have Millie be useful for Blitz's story since Viv claimed HB as a "male-centric" show, when in reality they could try something similar to what i just explained.
And if they do something similar to Stella and her brother with their plan to horde Stolas's royal stuff, they both can also go against each other if one becomes greedier and more ambitious than the other, further escalating their relationship, if that happens. Again, if something like this happens to those two, it could have an opportunity to have a dark mirror to Blitz's situation of his loved ones by pushing them away and becoming indifferent and selfish when loving others. Besides, for Stella and her brother, we don't know if they even would try to do something harmful to Via, while the audience has never seen a single interaction between Stella and her daughter. I too also wonder how the writing department will deal with that.
plus, thanks for reading this if you already did and have a wonderful day.

It would be really interesting to see and would actually shake up the show in a way that isn’t ignorable.

I’ve mentioned this on other review channels, but the main issue with Helluva Boss was how quickly it undermined itself within 2 seasons.
The show was supposed to be a dark, episodic comedy about an assassin business in hell fueled by the rocky relationship between a lowly imp and demon royalty.
Both characters were awful yet redeemable and interesting in their own ways and that made for an intriguing concept.
Now the writing staff threw everything away for an overly dramatic plot that lacks focus and feels more like a badly written fanfic between Blitz and Stolas.
It’s like the staff ran out of ideas way too quickly and now the show doesn’t resemble its pilot nor first episode at all.

I don't mind the villains though i feel like some were introduced too early?like Dhorks? Or Maybe it's just me who feels that way . The villains are not evil though (except for Stella) Verosica,Fizz,Ozzy,Cherubs and Dhorks were just doing their jobs while characters like striker have motivations where I.M.P got in the way of his goal . There are many antagonists in the show and i feel like some should be saved for the next season instead of making them villains of the week. Dhorks being saved for the next season seems like a good idea if that's what viv is planning. As for the jokes i feel like they should let a serious sceane stay serious like the one where Moxxie and Crimson are interacting .sometimes there are too many jokes that don't need to be there and the toneshift in some of the episodes like western energy were a bit jarring.

Sometimes she's plain evil mastermind making threats, sometimes she's just a bitch, sometimes she's just stupid, sometimes she's ashamed of people finding out Stolas is cheating, sometimes she isn't. She isn't a character, she's a narrative tool that change accordingly to fit the narrative.

    thats it for me

A lot of the stuff you mentioned they are actually starting to improve upon. Also a lot of the stuff about the characters you have to look past the main part of the story so it takes about 5 watches of the entire series to actually understand a lot of it. This was one of their big animations that took off. The show is like the beginning of adventure time they don’t know what they are doing at that moment in time, but later in the show they get a good grasp on what they are doing. I think we just need to give them some more time to get a grasp on the show and what they are doing

Honestly those who nitpick don’t deserve the attention, those who bash people for giving out proper criticism don’t deserve a fight. This gives good criticism much like another vid I have seen, it even gave space for fans much like myself to pitch interesting theories and ideas that we hope could happen. I specifically sincerely hope Loona and Millie have the chance to fully develop. And after seeing the episode showing Beelzebub and the life style of gluttony I can only dream how Loona can finally develop more now with a small group of hell hound friends and a possibility to get a guy for herself after the heart crushing moment she finds out tex is taken.

Hazbin and Helluva share the same issue where the title of both shows doesn't have a plot that is the title, instead it's dramatic and character development (Helluva boss had 4 episodes in season 1 of assassination atleast. Hazbin hotel had the hotel as a sub plot.)

i love this show to death but i hate the fact that its more shipping based now bc its really just miss understanding after miss understanding to drag it out for 2 seasons they also seem to want character debt but no character development 😭

One of the things i dont like in this show is that seems to be more of a Hazbin sandbox than an actual story they want to tell us. The idea of "demon hitmen killing ppl on earth" is really good, but they never went back on it again, "unhappy campers" sort of did but it was more an episode of the gang doing random unrelated shit with the death of the client at the end. It seems like the show is just a way for vivz to explain the HH lore without having to bother to explain it in the actual show. We dont know how HH is gonna be like, but i dont think they will actually explain the world to us, just make us watch the spin off so we get them more views.

But with problems in HB that should also be explained, they either point at Hazbin Hotel, or explain things on twitter XD

Season one was Great,But now the show is just another shitty "adult show" with sex jokes and characters saying "FUCK" "SHIT" every 5 seconds because It's "funny" and Remember!!!
    It's a Cartoon for "Adults"🗿

Yeah i kinda gave up on the show to be more in line with their own story. You can't even make a point without rabid and toxic fans trying to tell you how wron you are, no matter how valid or constructive your criticism is. But to be fair that is with nearly any fandom.
My biggest problem for example is the complete dogshit writing often and villains that are "evil for the sake of being evil".
Best example is Stella. First few episodes i got intrigued and wanted to know why she is the way she is.
But the latest episode with her made it perfectly clear that Vivzie isn't interested in writing actual good and properly developed "villains".
She doesn't have to be made likeable but if i never get to know why a villain decided to become the villain.. well then Deadpool said it best: "Well.. that's just lazy writing."
The latest episode destroyed that already nearly non existant personality she had. But many people said it already that it really seems like Vivzie has a massive boner in writing all females as awful as possible all the time.
I get it. Fetish for gay guys and all. But if that starts to ruin the actual story just to present the main gay characters on a golden platter all the time.. Well.. Not everyone just watches a show or a movie for the main characters only, you know?
There are people who actually are more interested in side characters or villains. If you don't explore them, then why the hell do you even bother making them in the first place? Why even give them a name?
You could just put some shadowy figure on the screen, don't give that character a name and you have the EXACT same endresult, only then i at least don't have to get my hopes up to ever understand why that character is the way he is, since i don't even know who he is or what his name is.
Maybe one day there will be an episode where Stella actually has enough screentime and some backstory why she became so hateful towards everyone. And at this point ANYTHING is better than what we have now. Fuck.. tell me she stubbed her toe badly on a nightstand and that pissed her off so much. Sounds ridiculous, but that still is a better story than what we have right now.
Also the constant retcon of things starts to get annoying.
Even there you have so many people start to find excuses why it is alright to do things. Even going so far to claim "Oh pilots in shows ALWAYS were non canon to begin with." which is absolute dogshit.
Well guess then in Lost people never ever had a planecrash then. They just warped into existence and suddenly where on that island, right?

I absolutely love the show and I’ve had a phase of loving it for a little while now. But it feel like I have been able to find a problem with every episode ever since season 2 episode 2 came out. It’s a good show especially since it isn’t on tv or anything. But it seriously needs some better plot writing.

I absolutely hate how they just always wanna ruined every opportunity for Moxie to shine and subject him to a damsel in distress role. He’s Helluva Boss equivalent to Squidward. Just getting ragged on from left to right.

i don't mind the villain thing, i think the first season was just to establish all the upcoming problem they'll face, now with only Striker being the first reacurring threat, we could be seeing more like the CHERUBS, Murder Family, the Feds and many more after.
now for some actually critism which is the pacing and tone. The tone problem is the same as Marvel phase 4. They rush the hurt and get straight to the emotional gratification, basically speedrunning hurt/comfort, ruining key emotional moments with mediocre humor at best.
the pacing is god awfully, and you can tell how they wrote the episodes from that as well. They'll have one good key moment for an episode and everything is build up to that moment, but they end up not revising the episodes so the build up feels like a kid in Fortnite whipping 90s in 2 second flat rather than a slow build up so the emotional moment actually feels impactful.
i get that the show is just an online serie made by a small team for free, but these are still real problems they have to fix one day.

Honestly without looking back at the episodes to reference, i dont think we ever had a episode where they had to go up to earth to kill except in unhappy campers. I think if they made the agents in truth seekers the real threat that season the story would've been a bit more smooth?

I do notice that sometimes the episodes Speedrun themselves and sometimes try to shove in a as much as they can in them
